Photographer's Starter Guide to MidJourney AI - Why you have to know this!

  • I am sharing very basic and simple steps on how to use Midjourney AI - made especially for still life/product photographers.
    The images that I was creating with MidJourney are unusual - unlike most of art-like images, I was creating either very photorealistic still life images or images that can be used as digital backgrounds for your still life or product photography.
    My next step would be generating scenes that I can put a real photographed subject into. Once mastered, tutorial will follow:-)
    Steps to follow for you:
    1. Install and register on discord: discord.com/
    2. Get to Midjourney: www.midjourney.com/
    3. Read the basic guide (if needed:-) midjourney.gitbook.io/docs/us...
    4. Words - Modifiers: github.com/willwulfken/MidJou...

    If you haven't discovered it, Midjourney understands photography terms. You can specify lens size (8mm, 35mm, etc), focal length, f-stops,and so on. Can specify specific types of cameras (like Polaroid).

    If you ask midjourney to draw a famous person, it creates picture of a person that looks somewhat like that famous person, but not quite.
    almost like actors portraying that famous person in a biopic movie or something. I'm not sure if this was done due to copy right issues, or they are intentionally making the picture so that it doesn't look like the real person, or it's the limitation of the AI.
    I suspect it is intentional, not limitation of the technology.

    Soooo….. is there any real point in continuing to build skills? Are we now redundant? I’m sure this conversation is being had far and wide. As someone who is relatively new to the industry, with the full intention of working as a photographer until retirement, this is confronting.

    • @photigy
      @photigy  Год назад +2

      It's a good question. I think photographers need to adapt to new technologies, such as CGI, video, and AI-generated imagery. With all these skills, we'll be able to blend technologies together to achieve results that none of these skills won't let us to do when used alone. For example, I'd like to use AI-generated backgrounds in my photography for sure.

    • @fj8214
      @fj8214 Год назад +2

      CGI & video I understand. AI replaces the actual act of creation. There is no real skill in using AI, removing the need for professional services.
      I’m all for technology that aids creativity - not replaces it.

      @@fj8214 You are not being paid for the sole creation, market is paying you for providing solutions to a particular problem/need. As longs as whatever you come up with satisfies a need or solves a problem you are a valuable creator in the market. Doesn't really matter what you use, it's how you can use those tools to leverage your position and create value for clients. And building new skills is always a necessity, because markets change all the time and being only proficient in photography only puts you at risk. If you enjoy creating images with a camera, I'm sure you would by creating videos, CGI, or even using AI enhancements for your ideas in order to provide solutions.

    Midjourney images are like someone with great art skill drawing things he doesn't know from a detailed description provided.
    but also intentinally making errors in specific information.
    for example, if you ask midjourney to make image of Coca Cola Can, it creates can that looks pretty close to a regualr Coke can,
    but mis-spells Coca Cola. and the can is a bit wider-shorter than a real can.

    Do you have commercial rights to the generated AI or just the query with a paid account? If you plan to use the generated art, do you disclose that it was created using an AI program? I know people do not mention if their photo was enhanced using photography software like Photoshop or Luminar so I wonder if it works the same way and if it even matters. Thinking about it brings up a lot of questions. As far as I'm concerned, people using this software and other AI art and writing software are no longer fully participating in the creative process, the only creativity is in creating the query. The real creatives are the software developers. It's probably not something I will use but I am interested to see where it leads.

    • @photigy
      @photigy  Год назад +1

      This is a good question, Janet. The license you have by default from MidJourney is not prohibiting you from using the generated image commercially; however - it does not prevent others from using it well.
      What does it mean for me as a creator? I won't be using AI-generated images "as-is" to sell to my clients - since I can't protect them by my own copyright.
      What I can do is to use images as a part of my creative process, modifying it in anyway I want. For example, I can use it as a digital background to blend in with my photography. The end result can be used commercially, and I'll hold the copyright.
      Another possible use is to create fast visualizations for projects I want to work on instead of making sketches. The speed and variety of images it can generate will help me to see what I'd like to create - either with my camera and photoshop, or CGI or all together.
