Then they where worthless in 2 (because of the NCR dollar taking over). Then Bugthesda brought them back for 3 with no explanation for why they are being used. Then told Obsidian that they *had* to use them too in NV (they didn't want to, they basically wanted only Legion and NCR money), so they had to scramble to find an excuse for them to be back (and the Big Mt dialog is basically them poking fun at it). Then 4 came out, again with no explanation. Then 76 came out and gave us a perfect reason for their use in Appalachia, that would at best be a temporary regional reason and in no way explains their use in the Boston or Capital Wastelands 190 years later.

This is not actually true, or at the very least wasn't actually the case in the original Fallout games. In Fallout 1 whenever you talk to people about bottlecaps they always say that they're backed by the merchants of The Hub, they never say that they're backed by water.

Bottlecaps were originally backed by the water merchants of The Hub, each cap was worth 1 bottle of water, and made it easier for merchants to carry and transport wealth without actually weighing themselves down with hundreds of gallons of water.
By Fallout 2 the NCR started printing bills and minting coins for their currency.(I don’t remember what they were backed by)

A lot of Bethesda unnecessary hate going on but keep in mind the mobius dialog was not from Bethesda’s creation but the original writers of the first two games. Honestly bottle caps make a bit more sense in comparison being that not only are small, easy to transport but also have trouble being regulated in any sort of capacity locking their value pretty aptly. It’s why gold was adopted because it’s hard to replicate or create and super rare and honestly not too crazy to assume something prominent, durable yet being unable to replicate like bottlecaps.

I mean they make sense for the world’s Bethesda builds. Fallout 3 and 4 are literal wastelands with no functioning government or body able to distribute currency.
And new Vegas did a great job of having the world building explain why caps are still the main currency in the Mojave. A frontier battled over by two major warring factions where either currency essentially becomes useless to a war torn area.
The reasoning for caps being used is consistent with their surroundings even if it is gimmicky.
