- A somewhat rare Benge 4 here. The '4' was Zig Kanstul's idea, I believe I've read. It's a MLP (medium large player) but with a slightly tighter receiver. This one is a great player! I hope you enjoy the vid - comments welcome! :) (More below...)
I also use this Benge 4 trumpet in the following vids:
• "I Know Who Holds Tomo... (Playing 'I know Who Holds Tomorrow')
• Silversonic, Recording... (Comparison with King, Olds, Conn and Puje)
Always appreciate your knowledge of trumpets and trumpet history! BTW, with your new audio setup you can really get a very clear audio idea of the sound of each horn.
Much appreciated, and always good to hear from you. :) I need a bit of tweaking, but these mics are clearer and a bit crisper, I think. Fun to tinker with. :)
Used to have a Benge back in the early 90's, bought new in 1990. Sold this horn years ago, remember it as a very nice player
I'm with you! So many horns that I've had in the past, I'd love to just try them once again in comparing them to horns and greater knowledge that I have now... :) Thanks for commenting.
Jonathan, you sound great on the 4X. It is listed in the 1969 Burbank Benge Catalog. The 4X was essentially created from the 5X. A leadpipe with a little more resistance was added. The bell on the the 5X makes the horn feel more open then the 3X. The 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X are all ML bore. In my experience having owned a lot of Benges and having played a lot more the serial number range you are in with that horn seemed to have some amazing horns. I love your reviews. I currently have a Prewar Besson Brevete (essentially a 3X) a Benge 5X and a 3X MLP. All great horns.
I sold a Benge 3X within a few hundred of this serial number - and it was a HUGE mistake. I do still have the 4X, thank God. Lovely instrument - and thank you SO much for a great comment. :) Please contribute more on this channel; it's helps us all grow in knowledge.
Hi Jonathan! Another great vid, and I'd love to hear the Benge vs. the Mendez back to back...the Puje sounds great but definitely darker!
Coming soon! I'll do it! I also had an Olds Recording trumpet at hand that would have been a good comparison. I'll get them all together when I can. (good idea(s)! :)
Good review; yes I also had a Benge, I so regret selling it, a great player; I preferred it over my (he whispers) Bach. Of course both are great horns, but Benge was my favorite.
I like your reviews and your playing.
Thanks for sharing! I've had many Strads, but this Benge is a great fit for me. I'll attach some other vids where I've played this Benge.
Jonathan - the audio sounds good - clear , easy transition between speaking and playing. You had mentioned that you were not happy with this recording but I beg to disagree - I thought that the audio was fantastic.
Great horn for $100. It does fit you well - you sound good on the Benge.
Heather
Heather; thank you. The Benge is a really good player - for all its cosmetic and other faults. I'll be releasing a video soon comparing the Benge and the Olds Recording trumpet. :) Thanks (as always) for the comments. :)
