I fell in love with the trumpet in early high school after hearing Doc's Brass Roots album and soon thereafter Maynard's MacArthur Park and Give it One. I mowed lawns, washed dishes at a local college cafeteria, and in the summer of '73 marched into a music store with $400, asked for the best horn in the shop, and took home a Benge 5X two weeks before I got my driver's license on my 16th birthday. What a wonderful instrument.
You always sound great on any horn. The Benge really sounds nice and warm but then when you push it it gets a nice ring without getting overly bright or edgy. What a beautiful horn. You are getting one of the best playing horns regardless of price. There are plenty of much more expensive horns out there now but the bottom line is sound, intonation, and playability this horn seems to have them all. I would have kept that horn if I were you Trent !!!
That’s awesome !!! All my teachers played Benge horns , Lou Mucci, Ray Copeland , Dick Prestige and Ray Katwica. It’s amazing that all my former teachers played Benge trumpets.I have a Chicago Benge that is in my opinion one of the best trumpets ever produced. This is one horn that I will never part with. It was hand made by the master !!!!
Beautiful horn! I have two LA Benge 3 MLP trumpets - a 1979 (silver) and a 1981 (raw brass). What’s the difference between a 3 bell and a 5X bell? Flare? Knowing that you’ve played other Benges, have you noticed a difference in the 5X? Also, you mentioned several times red rot in the leadpipe - is that visible when shining a light down the leadpipe? My raw brass Benge has some green (like the color of copper that has a patina) in the leadpipe. Is that red rot? Anything I should be doing to remove that or slow the spread? Thanks for your vids. So fun and educational. Hope y’all are staying warm!

I sold this one to my dear friend and former college trumpet professor who plays it every day. That brings me such joy!
