I live in San Antonio & just recently got a new house 2 months. The sod guys did a crap job. Didn't level, didn't pull out weeds, & didn't clean up paint & construction debris. I've been doing the best that I can & I've learned a lot watching your channel. I'm scared to mow it short because I'll get a crap load of scalp marks. I do plan on doing some leveling come spring. Thanks for your tips!
Really great video! I am dealing with the same thing. Beware while digging! I find glass bottle, old sprinkler parts, rocks, rusty metal parts, and whatever else. Good old lazy contracting by the people who built the home. You get what they pay for here.
Great tip! I have a 1/2 acre lawn with automatic irrigation. Drought time. I'm chasing brown spots with a hose and sprinkler. I like the idea of punching holes with a garden fork and top dressing! So simple. Thanks.
Thanks for the tips. I've got spots nearly bald. I added some ammonium nitrate last year, and I hope that isn't what burnt it out. I will replenish the soil and probably plant some Bermuda seed with it. Are you, by any chance, in the deep south like me? I would like to know to see if we probably have similar weather and soil types. Thanks.
So you said to put down up to three inches of soil beginning with 1/4 inch at a time, but how frequently to how soon after you do first 1/4 layer do you do the second ?
I have very large areas with brown spots that I expect is coming from underground debris (contractor grated yard and laid new Bermuda sod). Can I just have the entire yard aerated (which I need anyways) and then top soil all the brown spots? Also will it help to apply fertilizer on top of the top dressed areas?
@Duck Moore You're actually supposed to let the plugs stay in the yard. They eventually get broken down and recycle any remaining nutrients into the soil. Also, top dressing your entire lawn is a fortune. All he needs to do is aerate those brown areas and top dress each. Just leave the plugs.
Is there anything showing the outcome? Also, I’m having an issue where I bought a new mower and on my first cut I set it too low and damaged my front lawn. It’s terrible looks like zebra stripes. It’s brown on the parts where I walked towards the house sort of pushing up, and luscious green walking away from the house. It’s late April here in Houston. Will this method work just as well this early in the season to bring my lawn back?
I love Doc. The man knows what he’s doing and talking about but there’s no need to talk crap about you’re neighbor’s yard. Makes you seem like an idiot when you think that the world evolves around lawn.
I'm just really mad right now becuz my sister mowed are new grass that WE DONT MOW WITH THE BIG MOWER WE MOW IT WITH PUSH MOWER but no she killed it all and mowed it down to dirt
Simon Saucy . Know the feeling. New house, new sod put down. After 3 weeks and a lot of watering, the same service that put down the sod also cuts the grass in our community, came to cut our grass. They came in with a heavy riding mower and torn up my lawn in some areas. I got out my push mower out and told the company to stay off my lawn. I am working to get it back in shape.

A little gypsum soil conditioner might help loosen that soil up as well.
Very helpful
Doc what type of camera do you use? By the way I love your videos.
Docs a lot more tense in these old videos 😂

Does this same method apply to bald areas?
When you watch a video that confirms what you already know is the problem but you’ve been too lazy to address. Haha

Wow
Why not put some humichar and your top soil?

Yah my yards the best and my neighbors yards are shit.

Go to those outdoor stores, like REI, Gander Mountain, Academy, etc. They should sell them.
