Hey!! Great tutorial!! I've tried to engrave glass with no problem EXCEPT that I have a substancial deformation when I engrave a circular logo on a standard shaped glass. The logo seems to stretch out, making it oval in the end. I have double (triple) checked the diameter settings as well as circumference witch are exact, but to no avail.. The logo keeps beeing stretched to an oval shape.. What am I missing here? Some insight to this problem would be most welcomed :) (Using Lightburn on a XTool D1 Pro 10 Watt - with Rotary R2 Pro)
I’m familiar with this issue. Circle logos are the worst. Is the logo measuring correct on the glass and it only visually appears to etch oval, or does the dimension change once lasered?
@@ManCrafting The logo is round, and the size and positioning are correct in lightburn, but when I frame it, you can already see it's distorted.... I've checked settings for the rotary, the only weird thing is even though measurements in diameter and circumference values are correct, when I do a test from the rotary settings, it rotates about 2.5 or 3x times around the object. Very weird. Dunno why it doesn't seem to take into account the settings for the rotary, (even though the switch is correctly activated)... It's like if I give it a value of 200mm circumference, its rotates the test as if the object perimeter was actually 600mm... 🤔😐
It really amazing and impressive and I am trying to have a hobby-home business. How much does it cost for a desktop device like this? Thank you for your response.
Recently I did a dozen bourbon glasses and I picked up a dollar tree glass to practice on. The bourbon glass from dollar tree has chips and the amazon brand did not at the same settings. I also tried black tempura paint for the first time. They looked great.
@@ManCrafting the paper towel trick worked perfectly, I even scratched it with piece of metal and no chips at all. thank you so much has helped me massively. And will you do a video on it with the paint? Thanks again
Yes please do a video on adjusting the size of the art based on the taper of the glass. As of now for tapers I’ve just been widening the art by about 10-12%.
Black flat water soluble spray paint, can be sprayed on inside or out side, cleans up with water. The glass is getting damaged by the laser engraving process, leaving tiny glass shards which you can clean up with a Dremel wire brush or a flap wheel or very fine grain sandpaper.

This was a great video and the different methods were very thoroughly explained. I've been catching up on a lot of your past videos and learning so much. Thanks for all of the education and insights!
We use wet newspaper pretty much exclusively (on our 45w epilog), every couple of months we stop by our local newspaper and get their roll ends for dirt cheap, $5-10 lasts us months. If you use regular newspaper your ink can leech into the engraving and it takes some time to clean it out which is annoying. I'm not a fan of using tapes, too annoying to clean for me. We fold it up, cut it into squares with a utility knife (4 cuts and you have 50 pieces), then put them in a bowl with water in it to let them get as soaked as possible
Garrett N I suppose if you have access to that material that would be great. It’s good to know about the ink transfer. That would be a pain. I use all our newspaper mailers for the bird cage so I wouldn’t have any for laser. I like the soaking idea and I’ll cut it down in the future.
I have tried a lot of methods for engraving on glass and went back to not sing anything special when I engrave. I do a lot of glasses for local bars and breweries and they all come out great. After we laser the image with use a a scuff pad with water to remove any sharp edges there may be. Works for us especially when we are doing orders of 100 or more glasses at a time. We did try transfer tape but the result was the same as without it but it took us forever to pick out those little pieces of tape :-)
@@ManCrafting www.amazon.com/dp/B079JWGDN9/ref=psdc_15754811_t1_B006WQJ0SE. They are very light duty scuff pads that are used in the bars around here. Since we also do a lot of custom pen turning we also use micro mesh 8000 grit abrasive pads, as well as extra fine finishing pads. All with water. Since a laser does not really engrave glass, it does micro chipping, you have glass fragments left behind sometimes. We also use a lot of air to help with dispersing the chips.

Awesome video, great watch. I have a question though about the laser that was used. I have no knowledge about laser engravers but I am just trying to find a laser that can engrave logos onto glass cups and jars but I don't know where to start looking. Any suggestions?
This is a 100w CO2 laser. It’s from Boss Laser and I recently bought, about a year ago a laser from AeonLaser.us it’s faster and for some reason more powerful.
Hi ! Since you mentioned wet paper towel was your preferred option , Have you tried doing a Wet Paper towel on top of dish wash liquid (Combo) & then engrave ? You think it'll 🤔 give a better result?
Hi, great video. Can you recommend the best settings in LIGHTBURN software? Also, is it correct that you focused your laser beam to the top surface of the glass?
IMO, I like the "look" of the soap method best. With the item physically in your hands, I'm sure you can get a better feel for what gave you the best results. Very interesting video...thanks for making it. :)
I have two. Both 100w. The one in the video is a Boss Laser. My newer one is an Aeon. Better detail and faster. I still use both, but the Aeon is my favorite.
Great video. I use wet tissue paper. Coloured paper gives a slight hint of colour to the engraving too. I like your rotary tool. The one I have is similar in that it had the 4 wheels the glass sits on BUT without the inner wheel clamp inside the glass. Wonder if I can upgrade it 🤔
I use the laser masking tape on a daily basis at work. we laser then sand blast. But i noticed you didn't remove any clear film from the tape itself, so I wonder if it's a different tape. Ours has a smooth shiny film on top as the laser mask itself is quite stretchy, and a little grippy to the touch. If there is a film on top then that might be where the flame and soot are coming from. It's a little finicky to remove from the actual laser mask.
Great question. The tape I had was a sample. It seemed a little more Smokey than I was expecting. Maybe there was another layer to remove. Not sure. It’s been a while and I’ve been using methods other than the tape. That would be nice to know. I’ll see if I can get another sample and figure it out.
I have a 15 watt diode laser. What power setting and speed setting do you use? And how long was it taking to do a glass? Are you using a CO2 or diode laser?
My question would be: do you need anything at all with a CO2 laser? Those various masking methods are required for diode lasers AFAIK, CO2 can do glass and transparent acrylics on the spot I thought.
I’ve actually switched to almost exclusively tempura paint when lasering glass with my CO2 laser. It looks more consistent and doesn’t fracture chips of glass like I’d get with plain glass.
did you ever do an explanation of how to "scale" for the tapered glass? I'm trying to research for the purchase of a hobby engraver and want to make sure I'm getting something that will work for my intentions. thanks.
Hello friend, I have two questions: 1) Of the four methods, which one did you find to be the best? 2) Does this method work on ordinary flat glass? Thanks
Hello I've been laser engraving glass for quite a while and one of the tricks I use especially with optic crystal awards (say) and a customer that wants a sandblasted look is to buy a product from JDS or Marco or PDU, Johnson Plastics etc called Laser Tape. What you would do is apply the tape to the glass (make sure there are little or no bubbles, then laser the glass through the tape at a setting of maybe 25 speed and 85 power on a 40 watt laser. Then for very little money you can buy a sandblasting chamber, a small compressor and a spray gun to put in a sandblasting compound. Then tape off the glass so when you sandblast the text or logo you wont hit an uncovered part of the glass. Just a light sandblast will do and once you take off that laser tape you'll end up with a beautiful 'frosty white engraving. It's really very simple. Check it out..it's called Laser Tape. Thanks for the video! Jim
I actually used laser tape in the video and may have used it incorrectly. Not a lot of info with the product. I used it as a scan rather than cutting a template for sandblasting. Either way, I’ve sandblasted a lot of things including cups and glass. Personally I’d rather use my laser even though the finish is better with abrasives. You know how it is. When you have a hammer, everything is a nail.
Use blue painters tape all the time, never had color transfer (plastic, wood....) maybe it's your brand of tape? I use only Scotch brand (original blue tape).
Hi I have a atomstack a5 pro and I’m new to engraving, I tried all of these methods and none of them even left a mark on the glass at all, I had the laser at a low and then after a few attempts I put it to 100% and still nothing, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong or is my laser just not powerful enough? It can do other cups just fine but not glass, any suggestions?
I’m guessing one of the blue lasers. I’m not sure what it’s capability is. I have a couple that I just received and don’t know what to expect. Seems great on wood. I’ve yet to attempt glass of any type.

Looking for a laser to echting or graving drinking glasses and bottles (some hundereds but not thousands of them and on longer period -home production indeed-) to give an own disttilation a personal caracter.. also to etch QR codes on glass.. Witch laser is the best ?
Trotec, Radian Laser, and Epilog. All three are way out of my price range. The ROI would be years at my production level. Low end of the High end would be Aeon. That’s one of the lasers I have. Fast. Accurate. Clean. Well built.
What settings did you use with the masking tape? I've been trying this and I keep breaking glasses from going too slow, but when I make it faster it doesn't etch.
Hi, thank you for your great video and congrats. Could you please let me know the power of the machine you are using. Also power and speed you use to engrave on a glass. Once again thank you very much for your video and keep the good work.
This was a 100w. I believe I used 12-15 power at 350 speed. You really need to test each glass to get the best settings. Glass isn’t all the same. It all engraves differently.
where or how do i find instructions on making logos? i'm just getting into the laser world. any advice would be appreciated . thank you for your time. Jim
I’ve used Inkscape to create designs and there are 100’s of tutorials on RUclips. That said I rarely make logos myself. Most of what I laser the artwork is provided. If the artwork is too complicated their are many services that will do what you need for $15 and you pass on the design cost to your customer. Other options… search Etsy for svg’s you may want to use. For instance. Search wine SVG and 1,000’s of files you can buy for less that a dollar in some packs.
I’m not sure what inside would do. The laser is fracturing the glass. You’re intention is to minimize that effect and make the effect smoother. Also thanks for watching from Cost Rica. I’d love to have a second home there.
Fiber lasers are a different frequency to Co2.. Better for engraving metal. That said, I have 3d engraved stone with them, best way is to experiment - use the power/frequency grid image to see what works best

I find they clean up very nicely with the magic eraser sponge
Funny. I use the Magic Eraser for stainless tumblers. Didn’t even thing about it for glass. Not sure why. Great tip.
I'm definitely trying wet papertowel..!
Great job! That RotoBoss is Boss!! :D Thanks for sharing the other methods. I will try them out
They upgraded immensely since I got mine. Now it’s all CNC parts vs 3D printed.
Any update on yhe shape fixing?
I did the video and my iMac fusion drive failed. I’ll redo it, just got a little burned out.
Discsoap and wet kitchen paper works good.
I tried dry eraser marker white, and it works
Interesting idea. Thanks.
Cool video! What laser do you have? Red, green? Wattage? I have a red laser 25W, never lucky enough to etch on glass.
This is a 100w CO2 laser. I think a 40w CO2 might be able to do this.
@@ManCrafting Thanks for sharing!
IMO, I like the "look" of the soap method best. With the item physically in your hands, I'm sure you can get a better feel for what gave you the best results. Very interesting video...thanks for making it. :)
I totally agree!
I love that Roller Rotary and ALL your ideas, outstanding work to me anyway.
It does the job. Thanks.
Would you have better comparisons if you did the same image with different methods?
What kind of laser cutter is that please?
I have two.
Wonder if I can upgrade it 🤔
I know that the link I have has an accessory wheel for a variety of rotary tools. It’s in the description.
Interesting demonstration! I appreciate the effort you are putting into producing this video! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching and the encouragement. It means a lot.
This is on a 100w CO2. Not sure 15 on a diode will do it, but I haven’t used a diode before. I should have access to one soon.
I'll try the blue tape, may not as reflective as the white one.😊 Thanks for sharing
Anytime.
I have a question. What rotary would allow me to engrave small cylinder shape objects and bottles and glass?
The rotary I’m using in this video is the most versatile. He makes one for the K40 I believe. I have a links and discount in the description.
@@ManCrafting what about lipstick tubes? Do you need a special rotary for those?
My question would be: do you need anything at all with a CO2 laser? Those various masking methods are required for diode lasers AFAIK, CO2 can do glass and transparent acrylics on the spot I thought.
I’ve actually switched to almost exclusively tempura paint when lasering glass with my CO2 laser. It looks more consistent and doesn’t fracture chips of glass like I’d get with plain glass.
did you ever do an explanation of how to "scale" for the tapered glass? I'm trying to research for the purchase of a hobby engraver and want to make sure I'm getting something that will work for my intentions. thanks.
I did it once. Before posting the Fusion Drive on my iMac failed. I’ll redo it so I can post it.
Hello friend, I have two questions:
1) Of the four methods, which one did you find to be the best? 2) Does this method work on ordinary flat glass? Thanks
Totally works on flat glass. For me the soap seemed the best. Also Tempura Paint works really well and washes off easily.
@@ManCrafting Thanks.
I have used blue painters tape for other projects (plexiglass) and found that the "blue" can transfer to the project.
Interesting. I'll experiment with it on glass. I can see how that would happen on acrylic or other soft materials.
Which Mira do you have and which RotoBoss was this?
I have the Nova 7 and the RotoBoss in the video was the original for the Boss.
Please can you tell me where your rotor is from. I see some of it is 3D printed . If it is all 3d printed could I buy the STL files from you please.
hi thanks for the comparison, what software do you use to envelope the logo that has been a pain for me...thank you!!
Photoshop or Inkscape
@@ManCrafting Thanks Chad are you going to be putting out a video on the best way to do this, I have had a hard time finding a good video on the process. An inkscape tutorial would be fantastic!
@@JJ-ic8jm my editing computer with all my footage crashed about 5 weeks ago. I need to reshoot it. Let me try to do that this week.
@@ManCrafting oh man that's a bummer hope you didn't lose to much footage your channel is awesome thanks for all the info I will keep an eye out for the video. Hope you have a good Christmas
Fast. Accurate. Clean. Well built.
Where do you get glass laser tape from?
I got it from JDS Industries.
Hi, if I send you a picture, can you process it and upload it to RDWorks8?
I’m not your guy for that, but if you need someone I can make a recommendation.
Thanks for the video!
What’s the S&P setting for each method?
I don’t recall since I don’t do glass too often, but it’s in a reply somewhere. I do know I used the same setting on all of it.
I wonder if you have tried a water soluble transfer sheet. There is a Stick-N-Washaway from Joann store.
I haven’t. Have you? I might go by and pick up some and try it.
@@ManCrafting I don't have a laser powerful enough to etch glass, it was just a thought.
I tried with tempera paint it works well
That’s all I use now. Run it wet.
Have you ever found post-engraving cleanup is needed? I did a quick test and when I ran my hand over the surface I ended up getting a shard/sliver....
Yes. I usually hit it with a scotchbrite before touching the engraved area.
Excellent video! I didn't see what you did wrong with the soap/Q-tip jar.
What settings did you use with the masking tape? I've been trying this and I keep breaking glasses from going too slow, but when I make it faster it doesn't etch.
I don’t recall my settings but I’ve posted them in the comments more than once. I’ll see if I can find them.
Tempera washable paint works very well too. Would you say the dish soap is by far the best result/easiest to clean?
What power settings were you using for this?
Just getting into laser so I've got a lot to learn
I have tried a few methods and like the dish soap by far
Ray McCrodden so far it’s my preferred as well.
Nice. Is it works with Atomstack A5 20W laser machine?
Good question. What kind of laser is it? Fiber?
@@ManCrafting No. Fixed focus laser
I’m not sure. I’ve not had any experience with that laser.
@@ManCrafting Thank you. I tried with the help of black spray paint and it's not perfect but not bad.
I'll stick with cricut vinyl stencil and Armour etch. Same exact result and way less money, space and time. Try it some time.
I have a vinyl cutter, but it’s way more time and effort and the level of detail is much more limited, but when that was all I had that’s what I used.
The soap method is probably better from what i've seen. Love watching how it's done Chad.
Franks DIY soap or wet paper towel were my favorite. I’ll need to figure out an applicator other than my finger to make soap higher on the list.
@@ManCrafting use a little paint brush
Wet newspaper or the soap would be my guess but it ultimately depends on which one produces the best results.
I have a question from Costa Rica: If I put the tape inside the glass works fine? or must be attached from the outside? Thanks.
I’m not sure what inside would do. The laser is fracturing the glass. You’re intention is to minimize that effect and make the effect smoother. Also thanks for watching from Cost Rica. I’d love to have a second home there.
i have 30w fiber laser , which method i should use to engrave on gem stone like yellow agate or moon stone
Not real sure, but I’d love to have a fiber laser. Eventually.
Fiber lasers are a different frequency to Co2.. Better for engraving metal. That said, I have 3d engraved stone with them, best way is to experiment - use the power/frequency grid image to see what works best
Great video! Very informative I learned a lot! Will you still make the video for editing the images on a curved surface? Thanks in advance
you prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!

@Hayes Colby thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Hayes Colby it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account !
@Junior Fisher Happy to help :)
Hey Chad would love to see you do a video of how to set up the rotoboss to your laser. Just brought one after watching your review, but not much information on setting it up.
I can see how that would be helpful. Are you talking about setting it to get a 2x2 square?
ManCraftingTM no actually setting the rotary up to the software and laser so that a 3 inch round design come out 3 inches. It seem the other rotary I had it was about 5/8 less wide, and now that I have the rotoboss I want to make sure that It is set it up right.
I’ll see what I can do. I have Wednesday off, but I’m not feeling so hot today. Hopefully I’ll feel better by then and can do that. 3 in circle or 2 inch sq should I’ve the same result. I just find measuring a square easier.
ManCraftingTM hey chad what software are you running seem that my image is a mirror in rotary but not in normal
Would these methods work using a fibre laser?
That’s a great question. I’m not sure. I’ll need to find a fiber laser to test it one.
Hello!
What tipe of laser is this?
At the time I was using a 100w CO2 laser from Boss.
what kind of laser were you using? Thanks for the video
I was using a 100w CO2. Checkout Stealth Lasers.
Black Tempura Paint.. easy to clean up under water faucet.
Interesting. How does the glass finish?
@@ManCrafting has a piece of black embroidery stabilizer inside the jar for contrast.
