  • From the Girlysound (Girls! Girls! Girls!) demo tapes. The song was later re-recorded for her 1998 album, Whitechocolatespaceegg.

i've always liked this version way better, it's more raw and real. the album versions too clean and light

Yeah the guitar part is really emphasized here, I also watched a video of her singing Ride back in 95 and like it better than the album ver as well.

This might be one the most effective, and thought provoking songs I've heard. So raw, so good. Love Liz Phair.

i just love demo versions... they are the raw music just like the artist wanned them to be... without productors dirty hands on it

I love the faster, tightened up LP version, but no question this version has a story arc that's missing from the remake.

I'm just now discovering her music. I'm 44 and remember her name back then but was deep into metal. These raw tracks are so sad, beautiful, and real.

Elena Cau You know about her upcoming album? Seems very promising. According to Ryan Adams, she's gone back to a more Exile-esque sound.

Agreed - but you know it's still there - seriously artists are people and we evolve and change and try new things... and GET BOUGHT BY BIG LABELS :(((( but this artist is in her, she just has different things to say now - which means they'll sound different - but she is still capable of work this good and this honest :)

If you play it at 1.5 speed, it sounds just like the normal song.

The verse chords are so different from the later album version. Liz and her mysterious ways...

Brad Field I think what's so beautiful about the Girlysound tapes is that Liz had no proper training on the guitar, so the chords she played were kind of spontaneous and quirky. Later, she got better, technically, but the chords became more conventional.

    • @bradfield2266

I don't think they were that spontaneous-they all make melodic sense despite the dissonance. She took guitar lessons in 7th grade, so she knew was she was doing. There's a very sophisticated sense of melody and chords happening here that only happened because she had nothing but time , lots of time, to focus on getting stoned and playing guitar. Once she got busy being a mother (apparently she considered that to be her real full-time job, not a musician), all that intense focus withered away. I don't think anything stylistically that came after this, was an improvement in any way. Sad!

I think I prefer "flap your wings” when compared to "pack your things," although both make sense...
Aww, but then I heard the end 😊
