Charles is arguably the smartest of them all and yet he’s the one who says the *WORST* possible thing one can say to a person who has suffered persecution and witnessed genocide first hand carried by people who justify it as simply “following orders” while taking pride and pleasure in it and avoiding justice at all cost! He honestly thought Erik would relent after giving that justification?
Jajaja.
Also, because Erik was wearing the helmet that blocks Charles’s powers, Charles was left with only words to dissuade Erik from making that choice. Without the helmet, I’m sure Charles would have been able to affect the outcome.
It's scenes like this that give so much context to Erik decades from this moment saying "You think just because you can see inside my head you know how it feels?" Charles is capable of feeling other people's emotions and understanding a lot of what goes on in their conscious mind. But really digging deeper into their subconscious and truly seeing people for who they are and what THEIR understanding of their feelings is (rather than Charles' understanding), is something that does still take work for him. And sure, Erik had the helmet on here. But Charles made it very clear he'd dug through literally all of Erik's memories prior to this point, even ones Erik himself had forgotten. But Charles' views from his own life can distort his perception of those memories. Erik's memories led him to believe that the humans would turn on them the second Shaw died. He was right. Charles should have also anticipated that. Hell, he should have seen it coming before even Erik did, since he could read the minds of every CIA operative they were near, and should have predicted how they would react based on that. But Charles is often incapable of looking at things objectively. For the record I think these are good things from a story perspective since it makes the dynamic between Charles and Erik a lot more interesting.
As you grow up you can't help to agree with Erik more and more. Aside from pointless killing (which he does a lot) he's basically right about everything. Humans would wipe mutants out of existence if they could.
It is really one of those situations where there can't be true peace, humans can't live under fear, and mutants can't be asked to not use their power for their own benefit. War is inevitable and while nature selected mutants as the next step in evolution, but the human mind can more than compensate for that (eventual creation of sentinels or gene therapy in Logan)
Only because the movies downplay the power of mutants, to the point when even Dark Phoenix is not very impressive. In comics, any of the omega level mutants can destroy the entire planet, unless stopped by an equally strong superhero. And many mutants can't be killed by anyone.
It'll be a definite "cold" war made up of some kinda "rules" that humans and mutants wage. While humans are probably the greatest hunters and have been for hundred thousand years these mutants pose a new threat to human dominance over the earth. Unfortunately, there is no Earth 2.0 and until everyone figures that out there will always be a slow rolling war amongst the two factions. But make no mistake humans have the upper hand in terms of vast resources such as the making of Sentinels. We have cameras that can catch light, slow it down to almost nothing, this incorporating it into a Sentinel for example would make light speed mutants useless. Super strength mutants would mean little either. Eventually the technological side of humanity would wipe out mutants.
If humans become a mutant society, whereby things like status etc. were based upon mutant powers (as is bound to happen), that'll be the end of our story. This is because of "overspecialisation" (for the lack of a better term). Humans have come this far simply because unlike other powerful species on this planet, we received only limited direct natural gifts. We didn't have some natural occurring "shtick", whether venom or claws and fangs etc. to centre our living around. So we were forced to use our brains to solve problems as well as band together into cohesive societies (both these pressures further selected for intelligence and social adaptation).
The fact that X helped magneto how to channel his true power to the fullest extent. And seeing what he was capable of doing when he launched the missiles back at the navy.. X face tells a thousand words.
Notice how Charles was the only one who showed no fear as the missiles were getting closer to the beach, because he already knew that Eric could catch every single one of them. He never lied when he told Eric that his powers could be greater than his own.
these two are honestly one of my favourite foils of each other, best duos in fiction in recent memory for me. love that both care for mutantkind and their abilities reflect what they sense most in humanity - magneto's metal telekenesis detects their capacity for great harm, while charles' mindreading lends to his empathy, but both can detect men's intentions. and the scene where magneto inadvertently makes charles a cripple for the rest of his life is such great history and subtext for some of the stuff we see down the line. peak peak peak
This proves that Simon Kinberg can do a better job as a PRODUCER than as a WRITER In fact, he was the one who pitched Matthew Vaughn to direct this movie
The sheer power to stop 50 rockets all headed in excess of 2500 miles per second is unimaginable. Even though his power is to manipulate metal. His strength grew so much throughout the movie.
Considering the outcome, yes, it WAS a good idea to shoot metal bullets at Magneto, because that forced him to choose between controlling her bullets or controlling the naval salvo.
shoot enough of them and it wont matter ceramic would be the better choice, not all metals are magnetic. and those warheads were very explosive, last time i checked he wasnt blast proof
Seriously, how could you possibly convince a man who practically grew up in a prison camp and witnessed his mom get murdered, to call off his revenge against men who are just following orders? Those missiles were mercy compared to how Magneto's people suffered in the hands of men who were just following orders.
I love that the VFX artists included the detailing of the rocket motors of the missiles fizzing out when Erik stops them as they each have limited fuel, most people would skip over that fact
Now that I think about it... couldn't Charles just quickly take over the minds of these generals and tell their men to stand down or something? He has the ability!
Even if he were powerful enough to it at that point in his life, I don't think his morals would have allowed him to forcibly take control of others at that point. In this movie, and in most of the characters screen time in the Fox franchise, Xavier only uses his telepathy to as a sort of communication tool with others. Its shown earlier in the movie when Erik goes hunting Shaw in the beached sub.
@@toakongu1 He stopped Shaw. And it's not really morally wrong to at the very least inform the generals that the situation has been resolved. He doesn't have to freeze them just let them know that "Yeah it's fine people! We're all fine down here".

I have always loved Eric and Xavier’s brotherhood. Like even w total opposite ideologies they both still genuinely care about each other and both grew up fighting for mutants their ENTIRE life in completely different ways
Yuck. Why can one just be friends anymore? Why the big push for queerness? Erik and Charles have always been FRIENDS! Not lovers. Yes they do have a strong bond but that of friends!

2:57 in this scene Charles literally could’ve said ANYTHING ELSE like encouraging him to throw the bombs into the air. I believe that THIS was the trigger for magneto to do what he did.
Like Magneto did NOT know there were refugees on those boats. He could’ve literally said “some of them are thinking of their mutant children and there’s a refugee boat,”.
Honestly Erik was definitely right to defend himself and Charles was wrong in his argument. Had he said something about them not knowing any better and giving him a chance to psychically explaining to them that they fucked up and they COULD die but the mutants choosing not to shows that they are the better men as such it would've been more leverage for mutants to be left alone. Erik mightve agreed to an intimidation tactic where they should what they COULD do but what they DIDNT do even when they were well within their rights to defend themselves
@Baddaby circumstantial considering it was only the first volley, had Erik simply deflected them they'd likely fire another volley to neutralize the threat, Erik launching them back IS defending himself because they would've kept firing. If someone emptied their entire mag shooting at you but missed every shot you'd be WELL within your rights to shoot them and it would be ruled self defense
@@Baddaby no they shot because they were ORDERED to fire and take out the mutant threat. Mactagart tried to radio in the all clear but they were cool with wiping her out too

Always found it odd how Michael Fassbenders accent changes during the last act of the movie. He talks with an English accent the whole movie and then suddenly his Irish accent comes out to play for the last act as if they just didn’t bother doing adr for the last 20 minutes
It's especially weird because a Holocaust survivor shouldn't have either English nor Irish. They would have either German, Western Slavic or Hungarian. With the name Erik Lensherr, probably German.
I just realized the American captain is played by Michael Ironside, I recognized that voice with his little "it's been an honor" speech. Also, if I had a nickel for every time he was involved with a cruise missile trying to sink an American warship, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
I'm on Erik's side because when good people fight back, it's to show bad people what not to do. So this sentence They are just following orders, it is not an excuse or a reason to make good people suffer.
Neither did the Soviet and American naval sailors, they were following orders. Above all, they were all scared of what they saw and viewed all mutants as a threat.
Yea. Let’s tell the species that exterminated all threats to itself with EXTREME prejudice to take a step back and talk. I’m sure their adrenaline and 30,000 years of instinct won’t make them act rashly at the sight of imminent danger.
I don't blame Charles for saying what he said to Eric. It was a desperate situation and he made a mistake in the heat of the moment. It's okay for characters to have flaws or else there wouldn't be much conflict in any story.
It just to show you how much he has authority and power over metal itself, with the palm of his hand he's manipulating missiles. Magneto is truly a Omega level mutant
Someone compared charles xavier and magneto to mlk and malcolm x... i can see it. Two different ideations but to protect mutants of course. Its easy to see why xmen altogether was a great comic book series

What will Xavier do to stop Magento's bloodlust? A. Explain to him that making their bombardment seem useless is already enough of a display of power and that killing them is unnecessary. B. Remind him that he is perpetuating another cycle of violence and that he is more than intelligent enough to come up with a better solution. C. Trigger his PTSD with the infamous "just following orders" line of defense. The answer may surprise you.
I love when Magneto stops the incoming metals and then reverse them, sending back to where it came from. That shows how powerful of a mutant Magneto is.

In the events of Logan, if we’re considering a war between mutants and humans, the humans have essentially won. The best way to commit genocide is to make sure no new members of that race are born, and that’s exactly what Zander Rice did with his GMO food.
@@ShaunakDesaiPianoLogan isn't canon to the main timeline, it's an alternate timeline built around giving Hugh Jackman a good sendoff. Great chemistry between McAvoy and Fassbender. They both acted so well in this movie. Magneto certainly wasn't going to follow his friend's orders.
@@wafflingmean4477 Good analysis
As you grow up you can't help to agree with Erik more and more. Aside from pointless killing (which he does a lot) he's basically right about everything. Humans would wipe mutants out of existence if they could.

It is really one of those situations where there can't be true peace, humans can't live under fear, and mutants can't be asked to not use their power for their own benefit. War is inevitable and while nature selected mutants as the next step in evolution, but the human mind can more than compensate for that (eventual creation of sentinels or gene therapy in Logan)
When the allegory flies over your head because you accept the canon so hard lmao
Exactly, just give everyone super powers, and unlike nature we can probably give everyone every super power all at once
Yes for sure.
It make sense, since Charles was the only person who saw Magneto turning the huge sattelite dish.
He was even smiling when he caught them. He was proud lmao
these two are honestly one of my favourite foils of each other, best duos in fiction in recent memory for me. love that both care for mutantkind and their abilities reflect what they sense most in humanity - magneto's metal telekenesis detects their capacity for great harm, while charles' mindreading lends to his empathy, but both can detect men's intentions. and the scene where magneto inadvertently makes charles a cripple for the rest of his life is such great history and subtext for some of the stuff we see down the line. peak peak peak

Even if he were powerful enough to it at that point in his life, I don't think his morals would have allowed him to forcibly take control of others at that point.
Yeah but this was a very tense moment and people don’t think clearly in such emotional turmoil.
Huge difference between defending yourself (just stopping the missiles) and actively attack them back with said missiles
