This might be more specific to fly fishing, but things like season and temp/weather can come into play. I remember when I was first starting out, I used a dry fly shaped like a horsefly, caught an absolute ton. However, when I tried the same fly one month later, I got nothing.
Time of year matters a lot with fly fishing, as different flies will hatch at different times of the year. For example, if you used a caddis fly pattern one month and were successful, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be successful the next month, week, day, etc.

Metal is my go to for trout, but I was also used to fishing unstocked natural waters in Yellowstone where you're not allowed to bait, lures only. Trout love shiny things though so it's not a huge problem.
Try a slip sinker rig with an 18-24 inch 2.75 lb. leader. Use a small ball of yellow Power Bait to float with a red Pautskie (sp) on top. This is a killer set-up for hatchery trout.
One thing that really helped me was a tip from old timers. We were getting skunked and the group of old timers next to us were bringing them in one after another. When they were packing up, they gave us some "Japanese" hooks and then we were on! These hooks are ultra light and the bait floats much better. Yes, they tend to bend easier but I'll take that risk.
went fishing for trout this weekend. Saw them interestingly follow my hook all the way to the surface just to look at it but not bite!! Was fishing with shrimp and powerbait. Since I saw some of them swim by the surface i tried floatbait but no bites... Goddamn beautyful fish though! Will try smaller hook next time (this weekend) and marshmallows and corn aswell
My dad told me years ago that he was at Walden when the truck pulled up to stock the pond with trout. He said that they backed up to the edge of the water and dumped a predetermined amount of fish. Then they tried to pull away, but the 2nd truck got stuck in the mud. They struggled for about 10 minutes before deciding to lighten the load by dumping the whole truckload of trout into the water!
