As a complete beginner, who has only discovered watercolours at the age of 57 and only now because I have been making my own Christmas cards, your videos are quite wonderful. I especially find so very useful the fact that you name the colours as you work: a real insight, thank you very much indeed!
By far the best tutorial I’ve ever come across on mixing & applying colours! Naming the colours as you mixed & painted reflected years of practice, experimentation & observation, I’ll be watching this again, you packed in a wealth of tips, thank you
Love that you don’t follow others rules about wetting canvas and painting sky first etc!! Beautiful painting! A very informative and helpful tutorial thank you
Andrew, thank you so much for letting us see the steps and hints through the entire painting. I would also like to thank the person doing your filming. It is great to see you mix the paints as well the steps when you put the paint on paper.
Thanks for your kind comments. I use three cameras, two are fixed, one above my painting and one above the palette, and my wife moves round with a handheld camera to get different angles. Our son edits the films to produce a ‘proper film’.
i dont mean to be off topic but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost my account password. I love any tricks you can give me!
I just found you recently. I love hoe you encourage us to change the color often, adding different tones. I think that tip alone will help my novice paintings.
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. Yes, painting and/or drawing every day is how to improve. I have seen that advice more than a few times. I spend too much time watching videos such as yours (which I enjoy very much), and not enough time drawing and painting. It’s a form of procrastination I think, born of fear. Afraid of my efforts not being good enough.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing these invaluable tutorials! I'm rewatching them a year later and only now are some things beginning to click. You paint so quickly and confidently, many pearls of wisdom are unspoken. I only just realized how wonderful it is to not rinse out my brush every color change and just adjust what's on my palette like you do. I also never would have thought of using light red or cobalt violet in the sky. Beautiful! And lastly, seeing you paint happily in a short sleeve shirt in strong winds (in another video) really inspires me to try en plein air...again.
Another marvellous demonstration Andrew. I have to admire how you know the colours you want and are then able to quickly mix two or three pigments to get them. Also, the confidence you have in placing the colours.
Thank you very much. It is all a matter, as you know, of painting as much as you can. I have never done any practise exercises. I have just got with trying to paint pictures. Thanks for taking the trouble to write. Much appreciated.
An excellent demonstration and lots to learn… the way the perspective takes shape in the last few minutes is wonderful… I need a lot of courage to try and pursue. Thanks for this demonstration. It definitely pushes one to try harder while enjoying the process.
Glad you enjoyed it, but don’t try too hard. Just enjoy painting and eventually that pleasure will show in your painting. Many thanks for your interest. www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Enjoyed your demo immensely. You are most generous in sharing your knowledge and things you have learned through experience. Can’t thank you enough. I do so enjoy watching.
"Arbitrarily, if you detect a hint of a slightly more exciting color" LOL this is my absolute favorite phrase I've ever heard in a tutorial, but it's also a great point -- if you want to paint a loose and exciting painting, you've got to be _loose and exciting._ It sounds so simple but having the guts to actually do it is quite a challenge.
Thank you, Andrew, for sharing. I really like the freshness and liveliness of your painting, which I am struggling to retain when painting. There is so much to learn from your videos!
A magnificent water colour ... from the glorious sky to the sea weed hanging from the boat mooring ropes. Including the skilful family team behind the camera shoot. Superb!

Thank you for sharing. Loved the way you splashed your colours around and your 'top tips': Had never heard the tonal rule for reflections before! Cheers.
Andrew, Ted Wesson died some thirty years before I even picked up a watercolour brush and palette, and I know from your contribution to the 'Edward Wesson - Masters Choice' book, you were a great fan of his work and of the man - so think how lucky we are today to have someone schooled in the same vein, to take us through your process in real time on a screen in our own homes - your talent and time are greatly appreciated by all of us who are just seeking to get a little bit better each time we try.
You have a wonderful watercolour technic and you able to teach your way with clear explanation. You are painting like flowing water. But your technic is very unique and imposible to mimic to us all amateurs. Some areas, for instance green leaves on the wall was chaotic before, But then, wonderful colours and harmony was appeared like a magic.Thank you very much for these wonderful sharings.
I must say, I was gifted a box full of water colour paints, and hadn't touched a brush since I was in high-school. I did one painting just to remember how watercolours can be, and it was..well, quite rubbish if I'm honest. I found your channel and have watched and painted along twice now, and I've improved tremendously. You are a fantastic teacher, and a joy to listen and watch. I'm excited to continue painting, and I look forward to putting all your helpful tips to use! I love the style in which you paint. Thank You!
