I have a theory about Addy and Gabe's relationship: they lack in chemistry from the start and the scene where she reveals to him about the little girl she saw was super weird and his reaction was not in sync at all with her emotional state. Also whenever there's danger Addy grabs her children, multiple times throughout the movie she's trying to save them and putting them before her, which is normal for a mother but she never shows that kind of love towards Gabe. So my theory is that since Addy is originally one of the mole people she's not fully capable of experiencing romantic love or even most social relations in general (that scene at the beach with Kitty where their conversation is super awkward and she even admits she's not good at talking), but she really does love her children to death. This is because having lived her childhood underground she is emotionally stunted and while she feels the primal form of love that is between mother and children, other types of affection are more difficult to grasp for her.
I really loved all the ‘mirror’ coincidences such as the 11:11, the real spider crawling under the fake spider, and the frisbee landing directly over the spot on the towel. I didn’t catch most of those horror nods but I did catch the nightmare on elm st. VHS tape in the beginning!

Wow I gotta rewatch that scene never noticed it was the same mole. Nice catch! Wow I gotta rewatch that scene never noticed it was the same mole. Nice catch! Btw nice avatar pic. I’m a huge highly suspect fan MCID lol
I'm rewatching this and I just remembered that there is a very twisted version of Snow White and Rose Red where the prince that Snow was in love with started falling for Rose and Snow got so jealous she ended up killing her sister with scissors. Then after Rose had been dead for a while, Snow began to realize how lonely she was without her twin so she killed herself with the same pair of scissors. Edit: Forgot, after Snow dies she and Rose both become birds, Snow a Bluejay and Rose a Redbird, and they are always seen on the same branch of the same tree singing the same song.
I watched this right after getting back from the theater. I can't believe I missed so many connections. Super happy to get this commentary, and I Can't wait to go see it again.
I love that interpretation of the son's mask. My guess on it originally was that the son inherited some Tethered genetics from his mother, and the mask kinda symbolized that he shares both human and Tethered DNA, as you guys said since he shares the same soul as his shadow.
Something I noticed, Elisabeth Moss' tethered silently screaming when she sees Tim's tethered getting killed, and then laughing about it 5 seconds after. Did anyone think up that when one of the parties (either the tethered or the original people) gets killed, that part of the soul gets full autonomy in the remaining person? Regaining that part of yourself (memories, feelings maybe). So when the tethered Elisabeth Moss seemingly has a mood swing, it's because that part of her sees her husband getting killed meanwhile the other half takes over? I can also see it when Red gets killed at the end, and Adelaide screams out but then laughs just like Red in this really weird way.
oo my theory was that the real elizabeth said that she dreamed of killin her husband but wud never actually do it so the shadow elizabeth is explicitly happy to see her husband die
I thought they have the reversed emotions. That couple hated each other, but when they are tethereds, they like each other. After killing their real selves, They look and smile to each other. And when the husband dies, she cries and screams about it.
I feel like the ambulance was always a symbol for escape from the shadows, the brother used it as a way to get out of the dark pantry and the family uses it to flee from their shadow selves
So I am guessing when James does the Kill Count on "Us", once released on Blu-ray/DVD of course, he will be wearing either all red or a red jumpsuit🤔🙂👍🏼👏🏼👌🏼✌🏼
You two are such precious people I just wanna hug you both but I'm not gonna EDIT: Also since you guys wanted something interesting i don't know whether this is a coincidence or not but the main family's last name is Wilson and like one of the very first "evil doppelganger" kind of stories ever is William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe
When he hit his own head on the boat, it wasn’t to get the tethered to copy him. It was to get the engine running again so the tethered would get crushed with the propeller. As for Jason. I don’t know if he was controlling Pluto. I think Pluto was playing a game and didn’t realise he was walking into flames. But that’s all open to interpretation.
Anyone else notice that Lupita’s character in the movie wouldn’t eat anything processed? Like there’s a scene where the family is sitting around eating fried chicken and she’s eating strawberries with water and later on, on the beach, her friend offered her alcohol but she didn’t want any. I thought that was one of the giveaways to her being a tether since they had no way of making processed or prepared foods so they ate everything naturally like the raw rabbits.
Did anyone see how the people playing rock, paper, scissors would always result in a win for the guy on the surface but the tethered always tied down low
I didn’t watch the entire thing but i did what a fair amount, so i dont know if you covered this but... i loved the idea of the tethered using scissors. Reason being is how 2 pieces make it up, yet its purpose is to divide things into 2. They used the scissors to kill off their double, and when Lupita is at their friends house she kills one of the tethered with the scissors like the tethered which jason sees, foreshadowing the reveal at the end. Loved this movie! Also love your vids!
Another thing pointing to Aselaide's character being switched is the seance with both of them talking to each other about dance, in which "underground" Aselaide makes a comment that "If you had never decided to dance, the others would have never realized I was different." May be a bit obvious, but is cool to look back on, and super easy to miss. Also great job with the analysis!! Always enjoyable, keep it up
Am i seriously the only one who didnt like this movie? I didnt find this movie scary at all, i was laughing more and just found it more suspenseful and mysterious. But this pod cast has really helped a lot!
I couldn’t care less. If a movie is ruined for me by someone telling me a spoiler that movie would have been a waste of time anyways. Any movie that’s good can be spoiled as much as possible and it’s still worth watching.
I sometimes feel like most trailers don't spoil a lot sometimes ,(like infinity war ig) but there are some trailers where they literally tell pretty much the whole story but if I think it's interesting to watch I'm like hey..I wanna watch it if it's good it's good if not then oh well I'ma watch a better one next time🤷🏻♀️
For the most I agree with you for the most part. Though lately I've been going into more movies blind and it can be a different experience. That being said having spoilers for this movie probably would have help it for me for this film as my confusion pulled me out for a bit.
Exactly! I like to know what I'm getting myself into XD. I feel like I'm the only one, because so many people are feral about like trailers revealing too much, no matter how good the movie looks.
Her parents annoyed me greatly. Her mom was bossy, her dad was irresponsible and it seemed more like they were more interested in buying her off (the Thriller shirt, ballet recital, the candy apple, etc.) than actually being there for her.
1. Chelsea you’re a genius. 2. maybe the reason tethered jason has a burned face is because his magic trick worked underground and went wrong unlike real Jason’s where he couldn’t get it to work at all. 3. Freaking love this channel!!
You guys are champs for seeing the film last night and posting a review this morning. Glad to see Us blended Jordan Peele's humor background with his horror ideas!
Ooh another thing: the painting of the mother and daughter flexing. The two female characters were the more physical when it came to killing the tethers.
It wasn't Peter Sellers, George C Scott, nor Slim Pickens who ranted about fluoride in the water. It was Sterling Hayden (playing General Jack Ripper).
I think Pluto's face is burnt because while Jason's lighter didn't work, Pluto had matches that did light up. So I can imagine Jason putting the lighter close to his face while he flicks it to try to understand why the magic trick isn't working while underground Pluto has a lit match in his hand.
Wow I wasn't expecting for you guys to review this so fast. But I'm not complaining. I haven't started listening but I know that it'll be great as always!
33:19 I'm sure this is a year too late and nobody will see it, but fluoride in the water has been discussed in the dental industry and a large reason for keeping it is that it helps maintain teeth health for people who don't have regular access to dentists. Just thought that was probably relevant (given the theme) that the rich family in this is complaining about fluoride when its historically been something rather beneficial for members of the lower class.
GOD I LOVED US ONLLL Edit: Jason’s shadow is burnt because of the magic trick he was doing which involves flint. So I think that when shadow Jason was underground, he burnt himself every time Jason does the trick on the surface. Idk just a little thing I noticed.
The song good vibrations has a lot of meaning to it apparently the writer of the song wrote about it cause his mother would often refer to dogs barking at certain people as bad vibrations so and not barking as good vibrations so it was something that we couldn’t see but feel, a sense of unease. ( I think I remember dogs barking in the movie around the time of the attack) the song was also written with ideas of fragments of other songs and it came together through all these unfinished ideas.( I guess it kind of represents the fragments of the tethers and how they are unfinished projects by the government, as well as the tunnels unused because they became unfinished.)
my friend pointed out that addy is the only one eating a bright red strawberry while everyone else is eating chicken during a dinner scene which hints at her being tethered since red is a symbol for the tethered
36:10 I never realized that was why the Tethered wore one glove!! I totally get it now, thank you so much for talking about that! Man, that Thriller shirt is so much more important than I thought it’d be...
SPOILERS: I think the reason why the Tether boys face was burnt is because the real boy had that magic trick lighter but the Tether boy had the matches so when the real boy tried lighting the magic trick but wouldnt work the Tether boy's matches did work all those times cause him to burn his face....
woah i love the fairytale symbolism Chelsea picked up on! one cool little thing my boyfriend noticed was that Jason attacking Dahlia with the geode was like rock beating scissors (as in rock paper scissors) lol.
Jordan Peele gave the cast eleven horror films to watch so they would have "a shared language" when filming: Jaws (1975), Dead Again (1991), The Shining (1980), The Babadook (2014), It Follows (2014), A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), The Birds (1963), Funny Games (1997), Martyrs (2008), Let the Right One In (2008), and The Sixth Sense (1999). The Bible verse that continuously appears in the film (Jeremiah 11:11) reads: "Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them." The overhead shot of the Wilsons driving to the vacation home, along with the synchronized speech and mannerisms of the twins, is a reference to The Shining (1980). Ironically, the name of the Tylers' unhelpful virtual assistant, Ophelia, derives from the Greek "ophéleia," meaning "help." When the family is figuring out where they can be safe from the detached, Lupita Nyong'o's character suggests Mexico. Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico City. Dahlia appears to have scars on her cheeks, reflecting Kitty's plastic surgery (mentioned earlier). It likely is also why she cuts her own face later. By the end of the film, each member of the Wilson family has killed their own respective counterparts. Red is the only Tethered that uses language, due to the fact that she is the real Adelaide and had learned to speak before being trapped underground by her Tethered long ago. When Adelaide is lying on the couch, she sees a spider on the table crawling past a larger toy spider. This image foreshadows the 'doppelgänger' theme in the movie. Elisabeth Moss (Kitty) starred in The One I Love (2014), which was also about doppelgangers, albeit shape-shifting ones. Jordan Peele has said that one of the inspirations for the film was The Twilight Zone: Mirror Image (1960). When the Wilsons' "shadows" first appear in the driveway, they are holding hands--foreshadowing the Tethered's bloody recreation of "Hands Across America." The ambulance toy that blocks the closet door foreshadows the end of the film.
I legitimately pulled this up in regards to Chelsea's tweet about the intro... but seeing James dance, I knew I had to watch this episode instead of listen to it on the Podcast App lol
My theory on Pluto’s burned face. The tethered mimic their human counterparts. Jason likes to do magic tricks. If Pluto gets a hold of matches and mimics Jason, he’ll definitely burn himself. Jason kept playing with that zipper thing that just didn’t ignite. But Pluto would have been able to light his match each time Jason’s tried the trick.
God, that point you made about how trauma changes you is exactly what hit me as I was driving away from the theater. I also think Adelaide's relationship with Jason is such a good representation of growing up with a parent who has undiagnosed/untreated mental illness; how they'll be loving and kind to you and then suddenly snap and act like a completely different person. (I am... unfortunately speaking from personal experience on that.)
Ugh I loved this episode! So first off, I love you're work, and I'm a huge fan. But I have a note on the Good Vibrations scene from Us. First of all, I don't believe there was any meaning for choosing this song other than the fact that it's a fun song and he's rich white guy with a beach house. Furthermore, The Beach Boys themselves consisted of 5 members, brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson (none were twins), their cousin Mike Love, and a neighbourhood friend, Al Jardine. Dennis Wilson died in '83, 3 years before Hands Across America and Carl died in '98. Ao of course, with my vast Beach Boys knowledge and deep love for Brian Wilson, I was on the floor laughing, when the scene unfolded. I just thought it was so funny. Anyway, that's all I have. Thank you for the amazing work you guys put out!

Anthony Dominic yeah! along with literally severing ties to their above ground counter parts!
You think the fact that the father playing wack-a-mole in the begining is symbolic? Just dawned on me when they mentioned that scene.
Oh shit, yeah, he's trying to keep the moles down as they try to come up to the surface!
So amped you guys saw this post! When you mentioned that scene, I knew i had to try my luck and post a comment. Even posted a subtle comment on Chelsea's twitter, (which i will now delete lol). Anyways thanks for the hard work you guys put into your craft. I look forward to watching your vids every week! @Dead Meat
Dead Meat he’s hitting the same mole over and over again too. Maybe he’s fighting his tethered guy or something? I’m not good at this stuff and I don’t remember the specifics of the movie
Wow I gotta rewatch that scene never noticed it was the same mole. Nice catch!
Wow I gotta rewatch that scene never noticed it was the same mole. Nice catch! Btw nice avatar pic. I’m a huge highly suspect fan MCID lol
Eric Kern Fuck yeah man, they’ve been my favourite band for 2 years now. MCID
I can’t believe that he ended up saving the princess with his best friend donkey even though he’s an ogre... wait...
GGaming acc made me laugh 😂😂
"Whoopies"
Wrong movie
I watched this right after getting back from the theater. I can't believe I missed so many connections. Super happy to get this commentary, and I Can't wait to go see it again.
Good Vibrations was done by Underground Records so maybe that’s the connection
Juli-Anna Dobson I remember saying to my dad “those aren’t good vibrations” when everyone got murdered
I love that interpretation of the son's mask. My guess on it originally was that the son inherited some Tethered genetics from his mother, and the mask kinda symbolized that he shares both human and Tethered DNA, as you guys said since he shares the same soul as his shadow.
And Jason's mother is a tethered
@@gieldecloet7987 Which is why the comment said "the son inherited some tethered genetics from his mother"
His mother is fake Adelaide
That intro would have been great for "A quiet place"
OMG YEAH
Hell yeah!
True
I just saw that more as the tethered person mocking regular emotion.
I thought they have the reversed emotions. That couple hated each other, but when they are tethereds, they like each other. After killing their real selves, They look and smile to each other. And when the husband dies, she cries and screams about it.
It’s was crazy when I realized the son name is Jason and he always wears a mask
It is literally almost 1am cause my showing was 10:15pm but I literally couldn't wait to watch this after to see what you guys noticed. No regrets.
Another thing is that
11:11 is a coded molecular structure for “Re-Membering”
Just like how Adelaide is remembering who she really is.
I wonder if she ever forgot...
One of the VHS tapes in the beginning is 'The Man with Two Brains'.
Who noticed at the end when she started smiling, she started smiling like on of the tethered, but finally smiled like a normal person
You two are such precious people I just wanna hug you both but I'm not gonna
EDIT: Also since you guys wanted something interesting i don't know whether this is a coincidence or not but the main family's last name is Wilson and like one of the very first "evil doppelganger" kind of stories ever is William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe
I think Pluto willingly walked into the flames because he's not really rational and also because Jason backing up was part of Red's plan to catch him
Anyone else notice that Lupita’s character in the movie wouldn’t eat anything processed? Like there’s a scene where the family is sitting around eating fried chicken and she’s eating strawberries with water and later on, on the beach, her friend offered her alcohol but she didn’t want any. I thought that was one of the giveaways to her being a tether since they had no way of making processed or prepared foods so they ate everything naturally like the raw rabbits.
Did anyone see how the people playing rock, paper, scissors would always result in a win for the guy on the surface but the tethered always tied down low
JuiceExtraction I did thought I was the only one lol
Yep. They always tied because they both always chose scissors
caliBornbEauty I wonder if they always chose scissors bc it also represented them being in the same class, both lower class
Beach boys and NWA represent the 2 sides of California
Heyyyy. I like this connection.
Heads up, no sound in the opening credit clips, but the sound comes in after 10 seconds.
Also cause they were puppets cutting off their strings so to speak

Ophelia, play “I Think I’m a Clone Now” by Weird Al Yankovic
10:05 "I think you're a genius, baby." Ugh! My heart!
Always enjoyable, keep it up
Watching the movie tonight... will listen to the podcast on the way back home
But I’m leaving a like in advance
It was great have fun!
The trailer is the only thing at my theater
Bounty Hunter Kakuzu same
The movie was great 👍
Am i seriously the only one who didnt like this movie? I didnt find this movie scary at all, i was laughing more and just found it more suspenseful and mysterious. But this pod cast has really helped a lot!
Am I the only one who doesn’t care about spoilers? I still watch the movie regardless.
I don't but it kinda just takes the whole experience away for me...
NONE OF THIS WOULD'VE HAPPENED IF THE DAD HADN'T PLAYED WACK-A-MOLE!
Oooh but playing wack a mole is "TIGHT"😉

Her parents annoyed me greatly. Her mom was bossy, her dad was irresponsible and it seemed more like they were more interested in buying her off (the Thriller shirt, ballet recital, the candy apple, etc.) than actually being there for her.
Was I the only one who thought Jason's mask was a Chewbacca mask the entire time
Shit, so did I! But, yeah, I guess Wolf Man makes more sense for this movie...
It is a Chewbacca mask. He even says “It’s a trap!” when they see Pluto in front of the flaming car.
Was it not??
1. Chelsea you’re a genius.
2. maybe the reason tethered jason has a burned face is because his magic trick worked underground and went wrong unlike real Jason’s where he couldn’t get it to work at all.
3. Freaking love this channel!!
(2) yea I think Jason is also a tether like his mother
I STOPPED EVERYTHING TO COME WATCH THIS AHHH I saw the movie last night I really liked it 🖤

You're so lucky, it must've been terrifying
You guys are champs for seeing the film last night and posting a review this morning. Glad to see Us blended Jordan Peele's humor background with his horror ideas!
Ooh another thing: the painting of the mother and daughter flexing. The two female characters were the more physical when it came to killing the tethers.
It wasn't Peter Sellers, George C Scott, nor Slim Pickens who ranted about fluoride in the water. It was Sterling Hayden (playing General Jack Ripper).
"You can do it! You're so strong!" Man, I absolutely LOVE you, James! You're so damn wholesome!!
For Good vibrations, there’s a line that says “it’s getting closer now” during a creepy part of the scene, from what I remember.
I just loved that Jason took a rabbit at the end of the movie. Precious bean
Bean?
yes ❤
I think Pluto's face is burnt because while Jason's lighter didn't work, Pluto had matches that did light up. So I can imagine Jason putting the lighter close to his face while he flicks it to try to understand why the magic trick isn't working while underground Pluto has a lit match in his hand.
Us deserves an Oscar for the score! The music made the film go from amazing to one of my favourite movies!
Wow I wasn't expecting for you guys to review this so fast. But I'm not complaining. I haven't started listening but I know that it'll be great as always!
LMAO I wanna know what James has to say about Nancy Reagan....
As a vietnamese, I think you were talking about the word “THỎ" which does mean rabbit in english
Good luck with this kill count
There’s a lot of background bodies
javoow and the people line they probably killed them selves
Not as many as the purge
I Tried to count it and I got 34 or 36 I'm probably wrong >_

33:19 I'm sure this is a year too late and nobody will see it, but fluoride in the water has been discussed in the dental industry and a large reason for keeping it is that it helps maintain teeth health for people who don't have regular access to dentists. Just thought that was probably relevant (given the theme) that the rich family in this is complaining about fluoride when its historically been something rather beneficial for members of the lower class.
GOD I LOVED US ONLLL
Edit: Jason’s shadow is burnt because of the magic trick he was doing which involves flint.

29:00 Chelsea's eyes when James can't pronunce Yacht
36:10 I never realized that was why the Tethered wore one glove!! I totally get it now, thank you so much for talking about that! Man, that Thriller shirt is so much more important than I thought it’d be...
Fun fact everyone in the family got two kills

I know...
I’m just being that guy
SPOILERS: I think the reason why the Tether boys face was burnt is because the real boy had that magic trick lighter but the Tether boy had the matches so when the real boy tried lighting the magic trick but wouldnt work the Tether boy's matches did work all those times cause him to burn his face....
That's why he freaked out in the closet when the magic trick wouldn't work.

Ricky Perez oh alright thx 👍🏻
woah i love the fairytale symbolism Chelsea picked up on! one cool little thing my boyfriend noticed was that Jason attacking Dahlia with the geode was like rock beating scissors (as in rock paper scissors) lol.
The Bible verse that continuously appears in the film (Jeremiah 11:11) reads: "Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them."
The overhead shot of the Wilsons driving to the vacation home, along with the synchronized speech and mannerisms of the twins, is a reference to The Shining (1980).
Ironically, the name of the Tylers' unhelpful virtual assistant, Ophelia, derives from the Greek "ophéleia," meaning "help."
When the family is figuring out where they can be safe from the detached, Lupita Nyong'o's character suggests Mexico.
When the Wilsons' "shadows" first appear in the driveway, they are holding hands--foreshadowing the Tethered's bloody recreation of "Hands Across America."
The ambulance toy that blocks the closet door foreshadows the end of the film.
53:05 Fun fact, that can also be called a patchwork sleeve!
I was so happy when I saw the notification for this! :3
Little note about the baseball game: I believe the announcer says something about Minneapolis and the Minnesota baseball team is the Twins.
Us was kind of weird, It’s realistic, and it’s amazing
I dont see how it was a good HORROR movie. It should have been a suspense, mystery and thriller.
Robot band because
Like most “horror” movies they disappear or vanish in thin air
Shayne Letendre it’s a horror movie depending on what’s scary to certain people
Blacklivesmatter If thats a horror to some. God bless there souls if they ever watch the conjuring, the exorcist or anything close to that!
Awesome take with the fairy tales, I definitely didn't catch that.
Finally watched this movie tonight, getting around to the podcast now
God, that point you made about how trauma changes you is exactly what hit me as I was driving away from the theater. I also think Adelaide's relationship with Jason is such a good representation of growing up with a parent who has undiagnosed/untreated mental illness; how they'll be loving and kind to you and then suddenly snap and act like a completely different person. (I am... unfortunately speaking from personal experience on that.)
The opening credits scene with the bunnies, there were double of each bunny even though they weren’t next to each other.
James has a up up down down hoodie
The lyrics to The Beach Boys alludes to the dynamic between the original people and their dobys.
I know that this is probably a coincidence but Adelaide is also the location of The Somerton Man. The unsolved case of man found dead on a beach.
This is too good to be a coincidence
Jason's Doppelganger is named Pluto, which could be a reference to The Hills Have Eyes, one of the cannibal sons in that is named Pluto.
