Salem has a horror wax museum called the Nightmare Gallery and there’s a Dead Silence dummy behind the counter with a sign pinned to him that says “No, I’m not Slappy from Goosebumps”
Maybe it gets quiet before she attacks because that's how it's supposed to be during her shows. It's supposed to be silent in the theater while the show is going on. The one kid that interrupted her during her show was the first victim so perhaps it gets quiet because she wants to force people into the same situation. Whoever opens their mouth(in the kid's case by heckling but in the other cases by screaming) during her "show" gets their tongue ripped out so they can't speak/heckle anymore(I mean that and they die). So it's a replay of the situation but this time she wants them to make noise so she is physically able to kill them, since it doesn't appear that she can kill anyone unless they scream.
yeah this seemed pretty obvious considering the title is dead silence and the dummy is making a shh motion with his mouth. Was this some kind of deep thing? I thought it was very obvious that she can't kill if they don't make noise that's like the whole story
@@milkgxng I didn't exactly think of it like op's theory but I also thought it was a bit obvious why it went quiet first. Chelsea even said it's sort of the set the mood for a jump scare. Then you're more likely to scream.

Just a point of interest. Generally the crime scene is still under police investigation if the police tape is up. So, essentially the police can still secure evidence, including Billy, from the scene. Mind you there should also be an officer at the scene for security too.
The ghost doesn't stop time. It just stops noise. Like a record player slowing down until it finally goes silent. The pendulum of the clock still keeps on going, even though it's silent, and the same goes for the buzzing of the neon-lights and the ambiance sounds when Henry goes into that basement area. It becomes extremely subtle later in the movie, but it's basically what Chelsea said: Mary Shaw is basically a horror movie director, taking away the sound and music right before a jump scare to make people scream.
Yeah, I kinda agree. But if you think about it, it's more likely to be just the simple fact that her puppet shows were to be silent. Her first victim was that child making fun of her show, while everyone else was being completely silent and listening. I think she WANTS everyone to be silent, just like her show. And the punishment for noise/screaming is death, just like her first victim.

The alternate ending of the movie made at least a little more sense than what we got; it still had the “Dad was a dummy” reveal, but the stepmom was human. We learn via flashback that she was pregnant, but Jamie’s father was abusive and caused her to miscarry. At her lowest and most vulnerable, she was possessed by Mary Shaw.
58:25 probably the most hilarious realization moment for James ever 😂 I used to watch this movie so much when I was a young teen and even I missed that second twist
44:00 taking a picture of a dead member of the family as if they were just sleepy was a normal Victorian era practice. They would usually include the living siblings, friends or spouse into the picture as a sort of "Even dead you are still one of us and will be missed" it is a haunting but beautiful practice that sadly the modern funeral business snuffed out.
Where I live there isn't so much a myth or legend but a weird phenomenon/person. We call her "Main Street Mary" and she is a vagrant that has been around for ages and never seems so to age, and seems to be in multiple places at once. You'll see her on main street, then see her miles away just minutes later.. it's very odd. As I said too, she seems to not age... like older folk who live here say she has been wandering and begging and yelling at people for as long as they can remember. There are theories that some of her appearances are jokes, but it isn't like she's a ghost... she's just a crazy homeless woman yelling at cars. So why would someone try to pretend to be her? Right? She spends most of her time on main and the park and bridge there, but often times you can see her multiple times on a single drive. Making is appear as though she teleports or is in multiple places and it can be very unsettling. Idk. But everyone around here knows her, but we're not obsessed. It's more of a, "Sorry, I'll be late. Mary is blocking traffic again."... that kinda thing. Anyone would know exactly who you meant.
Right? And the flashback scene did such a good job of getting her character across and everything. I would have loved a Dead Silence 2, 3, however many. Even if they would have been terrible, as long as the original actress could have still played Mary Shaw, I think they would have still been worth a watch. I mean, look at Barbra Crampton, for instance; she's been the best part of any movie she's been in (in my opinion of course!) so I feel like a similar vibe could have been evoked through sequels of Dead Silence, had they included the original Mary Shaw actress.
If you live in or around the Merimack Valley of Massachusetts you know about Dudley Road in Bedford/Billerica where a bunch of nuns supposedly killed themselves by hanging
I can confirm this. Have you been up to the old mental facility? They tore it down a little over a year ago but it had a school, boarding area, a church etc. I went there twice with a few buddies to explore, there was blood stains all over the church floor, everything else was pretty normal but still a creepy ass place.
I am from Athens, OH and the big local legend was the woman who died in the tower at the local asylum and the ghost followed a local student home and that student was found dead the next morning. It actually explains how and why Mary Shaw made the stepmom a dummy in the alternate ending, which is on the DVD form. Basically, stepmom lady was cheated on by her husband and Mary took advantage of that and basically said “Do you want to get revenge on these men because men are horrible?” And then stepmom lady let Mary Shaw possess her body
Yeah, these two don't know what a good horror is. James Wan is brilliant at getting the sheer terror out of any movie, including this one. Maybe even more than his others.
I can not deny that I do really enjoy this movie. It was one that my father and I both enjoyed watching and laughing at Donnie Wahlburgers lines. However, I believe that during the flashback scene from Henry when he was younger, the audience applauded because Mary Shaw was able to talk at the same time as Billy. This was followed with Mary Shaw making the statement “Now who’s the dummy.” I have to admit I truly enjoy that scene haha.
As soon as you mentioned the Owls of Ga'Hoole I officially lost it. The books the movie was based on were the shit when I was younger (at least for me). I very fondly remember going to the public library and getting like four at a time to binge read when I was like eleven or twelve. Oh, and I vividly remember being hyped as hell when I watched the movie for the first time. That was legit my childhood becoming a reality and was amazing for younger me. I miss those days. It was much more fun being a pre-teen/child than a teenager. For sure.
I was never a huge fan of this movie, but I definitely prefer the extended edition. The whole stealing-tongues thing and mimicking the voices helps Mary Shaw stick out more as a horror movie ghost and is a bit more intimidating, and I have to admit, the visual of a giant tongue composed of smaller tongues is definitely a visual that'll stick with you for one reason or another.
The did the Innocent ghost who is killing out of anger for being linched in a film called “darkness falls” kind of an evil tooth fairy horror film. Certainly got a few chills when I saw it as a kid
I really liked darkness falls, read the book and then saw the movie and they both were very creepy. That tooth fairy was scary af and they had great unsettling atmosphere throughout the movie. I feel like no one ever talks about it though 😔 I hope it can get a kill count one day.
I loves this movies I watch it ever year during October. I always try to watch it with new people or a group. I always have people scream during the film. I even got to go in Dead Silent and the Thing haunted houses over at Fright Night in Orlando Florida. They were both great. 15:08 Mary Shaw Ghost/Demon ability is not to stop time. It makes all sound die or off. Like the name of the title. Its supposed be when how she was screaming before she got murder and got her tongue cut off and killed. Which supposed to mean or sound disappeared.
I vaguely remembered the film (soup shoot, eww!) but Chelsea and James’ detailed review, as always, is thoroughly enjoyable. Oh and I may have LOL’d through all of Chelsea’s commentary on Mary Shaw’s sexy dolls. As Chelsea said, Mary was a job generator. She was an entrepreneur like that 😂
I can watch alot of horror movies, but now I'm traumatized because of Dead Silence because first: I don't like dolls. And second: my (now ex) boyfriend forced me to watch it even though I made it clear that I didn't want to. When I got home, I was crying hysterically. It was such an intense movie and there happened so much that my head couldn't take it anymore. That was this year, so I was (and still am) 15. I have nightmares, can't look at dolls normally and had to see a psychologist to help me. This is an underrated movie, and if you like to get scared and such I do recommend it. But if your partner doesn't want to, don't because they'll have a reason to break up with you lol.
I love the fact that in the movie when Jamie and the cop are in the abandoned auditorium, They look at Billy's doll case and see that he was the 57th doll and this is the 57th dead meat podcast.
I walked in on my mom watching this movie and it had me messed up for a few years until I watched it on my own. Dead silence, sinister, and Texas chainsaw are the only movies to legitimately scare me so far
Okay guys, listen up. Donny and Mark were NOT both in NKOTB. Only Donnie was, and I know because I've been to 3 of their concerts and Donnie was all over my then 14 year old's bedroom walls. Mark later appropriated enough black culture to land a #1 song, got featured in those Calvin Klein ads with Kate Moss (who thought he was creepy as hell, smart girl) and spring-boarded from those into a movie career. Also, Donnie (not Mark) is the patient who kills Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense, and is his proudest acting achievement. And yes, they're both horrible people. I love you both, BTW.
Talking about getting a doll with anthrax, the Nicholas Cage / Sean Connery move the Rock has a doll with some kind of poison that it shoots out it's mouth.

just ran my first 5 km without breaks to this podcast! happy wednesday!
JaneFrane I do the same lol.
Congrats bro
Dead Silence is my guilty Pleasure film to be honest
Yeah, these two don't know what a good horror is. James Wan is brilliant at getting the sheer terror out of any movie, including this one. Maybe even more than his others.
Finally! Someone's covering dead silence, it's honestly so underrated
@Matt L.
Legend of the Guardians - The Owls of Ga'Hoole is actually a pretty good movie with some damn gorgeous scenes...
The First Attempt the song by Owl City was amazing too. “Take to the sky”
Still can’t believe that name got through
Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson from Insidious have roles in the movie as well
Billy is actually the reincarnation of Dio Brando and uses ZAWAAAARRRDO to attack Jamie.
You mean Donnie Wahlberg is playing an aggressive cop? What a stretch of his range.
For sure.
Surprised they didn’t mention how the score was a spin on hello zepp.
At least it sure as hell sounded like it
*“Mary Shaw is a job creator”* 😂😂😂
hyaaaaa lisa
im tryna get this rose to you
but im dummy thicc
And the clap from my asscheeks causes billy to kill me
I love all the Room references 😂
YOU’RE TEARING ME APART LISA!
Somebody was definitely tearing Lisa apart...
Billy the Puppet is one of the childhood trauma moments I went through lol. His design is so creepy. Dead Silence is a very underrated horror movie.
No its not
This movie felt like a fever dream 😂
They are too cute together, find yourself someone who shares a passion with you like these to do
james' face at 58:30 is priceless
I was never a huge fan of this movie, but I definitely prefer the extended edition. The whole stealing-tongues thing and mimicking the voices helps Mary Shaw stick out more as a horror movie ghost and is a bit more intimidating, and I have to admit, the visual of a giant tongue composed of smaller tongues is definitely a visual that'll stick with you for one reason or another.
New Jersey Devil Is the folk lore that we grew up hearing about
Dead Silence is the quality midpoint of Annabelle and Child Play in the Evil Doll subgenre
This was my earliest horror movie I’ve ever seen, and it was my favorite of my moms
“This is 2007! Yo this is bush era! Got the terror alert, probably on orange, never goes lower!” I laughed pretty hard at that one lol
She was an entrepreneur like that 😂
My town has a few missing kids that just vanished, its a pretty popular cold case and a pretty small town
Lucy always goes to Chelsea first 🙈.
Still waiting for James or finally do a kill count on this movie.
Dead Silence: It's An Movie!
Chelsea insisting on tying this movie to The Room is what I needed today
If your gonna make a doll you live inside it might as well be a 90's super model...truer words where never spoken
Fridge (noun, verb): 'She's not really a person, more of a catalyst'
Bob gunton is also the warden from the shawshank redemption
I really liked the movie a lot. I just wish they had kept the original ending which told the back story of Ella.
No one:
James’ descriptions: James and Chelsea reviews the dummy thicc 2007 film dead silence
Talking about getting a doll with anthrax, the Nicholas Cage / Sean Connery move the Rock has a doll with some kind of poison that it shoots out it's mouth.
People constantly recommending movies in the comments after you guys having mentioned the email dozens of times must be infuriating
If people have only ever seen the first few Friday the 13th videos, he used to say you could mention movies in the comments that you would like to see covered. It just got out of hand after the channel blew up.
Dead silence is still one of my favorite horror movies
this movie scared the absolute shit outta me when i was a kid, so it got a special place in my heart
this was one of the first horror films i saw and it scared the absolute SHIT out of me when the dad was revealed to be dead
When James said, “He’s 31 and she’s 33,” I thought he was doing a bit and he was meaning the dads age for some reason and I was like who are you trying to fool 😂
Lmfao. Its okay so did I. Good to know I wasn't alone on that one 🤣🤣🤣
Not from this place but Point Pleasant has a folklore on The Mothman. They have festivals and they also have a statue.
I watched dead silence for the first time last night and it was like really really good! It sucks that I’ve discovered it the day before it’s taken down from HBOmax
