“...space without a sound.” I love that line so much, how it not only refers to him, staring without a sound wordlessly realizing the direness of his situation, but also refers to him staring in awe at the terrifying silent majesty of space.

“There ain’t no hand to guide ya when your memory banks are blown.” The first few choruses that line is about the ship, but in the very last one it struck me that it might’ve been talking about him, too. He sings about home, he sings about not knowing his star, he sings about being alone, yet when his ship is fixed he chooses to travel aimlessly again. I think he doesn’t remember where his home is.
This theory could be true, but he never really sang about not knowing his star. The lyrics say, "He sings a song of loneliness, of a man without a star Well, he sings of how he's feeling when there's no one else around" The lyrics never said anything about not knowing his star. The part about him setting the course to go to another star might just be referring to him going to the next star on the path to finish the delivery he set out to do in the first place. He also might just be a traveler who takes occasional shipping jobs. There is evidence supporting him having memory loss though. Specifically that the lyrics saying he had woken up. The lyrics also never say anything about the character being a human. He could be a sapient robot who literally has memory banks in his head. Overall, this theory has some good evidence behind it and is quite interesting. However, the evidence only really explains how he might have gotten memory loss, but not if he has it.
@@bobbytonson5890 no my theory isn’t referring to how he got memory loss. I’m saying he had memory loss before he ever entered the ship. And when he sings about a lonely man without a star, he is literally referring to himself. He could be a robot or an alien, but it’d have to be a humanoid one with the structure to play a guitar. Idk, it just struck me so odd that after getting his ship fixed, he just flies off to another star. Not back to work (where he is probably presumed dead or fired), and not back home (something he sang a lot about). And even when he flies off, he’s still singing about the lack of guidance and lost memory. I think he’s searching for his home, one star at a time. (And when he says memory banks, he is comparing his own mind to the ship’s lost logs. But unlike the ship’s, his can’t be restored). But you do bring up good counterpoints, and I’m flattered that you gave my theory some real serious thought. Because you’re right, there’s nothing concrete that explicitly says the character has memory loss. Just how you interpret the lyrics.
@@localscissors4036 Sorry about misinterpreting what your theory was about. With the part of him going to another star, it is not too clear why he is going to another star. He perhaps maybe just going to finish the job he was sent out to do, or is just traveling around seeing what life has for him. I also think they are more of a freelancer, taking whatever jobs he needs to make a living. The line at the beginning about him getting a chance to be alone makes me think he usually works with other people on the jobs he takes and took the opportunity to be alone and write songs. The line, "With little chance of getting home, with power running down" refers to some kind of home. This could mean that he does have some kind of home. This could also perhaps refer to him losing the chance of finding his home if he dies on the ship. There is another line mentioning a home. The line, "Adrift with only life support, she won't find home again" refers to the ship not finding its home. However, the weird part is not the finding home part because it could be explained with him and Starsong not finding their home. The weird part is the word "again". This shows that the ship had a home that it could go back to again. The thing is though, is that the ship might belong to another person and that it was rented out to him. This would explain why it says that the ship wouldn't find home again. The ship is lost in space would stop it from being returned to the owner. This theory about the ship would also tie into the theory of him being a freelancer. His employer for the hauling job he got may have given him a ship to use for the job.
@@bobbytonson5890 yeah that’s a totally valid interpretation. I always thought the guy was part of some sort of crew, hence why he was sent off to do a grocery run and then expected to return. And also why he would be happy to get some relaxing alone time. This would explain what the ship’s ‘home’ is, being whatever port or cargo ship or motherboard he is employed on. I still like my theory because it adds a lot more to the song and the character, but you do bring up valid criticism. You can totally think of him as a freelancer, but I don’t know how many freelancers do milk runs for a job.
@@localscissors4036 I think the interpretation of him being part of a crew is quite interesting. That theory has the part about him getting a chance to be alone make more sense. Working with people in a crew all the time would make a chance to be alone and focus on your hobbies much more valuable. The term milk run can also refer to some kind of routine uneventful journey rather than just a grocery run. The job might've just been a job to do a quick run of a routine shipping route and the ship is usually used by a person who is employed with a more permanent shipping job. That person was maybe too sick to work and their employer just was looking for somebody to do the job while they recovered. The way I interpreted it was him being some sort of traveller with memory loss looking for his home who takes whatever jobs he can get from the station he is staying at to earn a living. He just happened to take some kind of shipping job and was unlucky on his way. He ends up getting found by a liner and gets the ship fixed up. At the end of the song, he might have gone off to finish the journey or have just decided to start looking for his home again. Either way, both theories are interesting and have some evidence supporting it and some against it. They both would probably make a good sci-fi story with each having its pros and cons.
