As part of the series 'SANKHYA - The significance of numbers,' we present Dasavatharm. This is a concept closely related to what we now call Darwin's theory of evolution. The avatars (incarnations) start from the aquatic form Matsya and end with the unknown form Kalki that is yet to come. This song 'Parkadal alaimele' was first written in mellifluous Tamil for the picture Raja Desingu, the Carnatic music fraternity made it their own with great enthusiasm. This is rendered by Vidushi Sudha Ragunathan.
Concept, Choreography and Performance: Sukanya Kumar
Cinematography and Edit: Sumanth Kashyap
Lyrics: Udumalai Pettai Narayana Kavi
Music rendition: Smt. Sudha Ragunathan

Meaning:
Oh, Ranganatha who lies on the bed of snakes on the waves of milky ocean,
Oh God, give us wisdom to search for your lotus feet and get salvation
When the evil Somukha hid the four Vedas inside the Ocean,
You later took the incarnation of fish to,
Bring them back to the earth and kill that bad one
When the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean to get elixir, for lifting the Mandara mountain,
You took the form of a turtle with a curved hard back
When Goddess earth was hidden inside the seven oceans by that evil Hiranyaksha, a great sinner,
You took the form of a boar and lifted the entire earth.
On hearing the words of Hiranya “Where is he?” his son replied that you are everywhere. “He is here in this dust and in that pillar,” he said.
You took the incarnation of Narasimha, rose with great anger, a very gigantic body and a big belly and tore with your sharp claws his flesh apart and stood there spilling his blood all around
Oh lord who carries the conch and the wheel and who is the basis of everything.
Oh Lord Vamana who came asking for three feet of earth, then measured earth by one one foot, heaven by another and then measured the head of Mahabali,
Oh Lord Parasuramsa, the enemy of solar dynasty after you the soul of your father was taken by them,
Oh Lord, born as Dasaratha Rama, released devas from prison and killed Ravana and others,
Oh, Balarama who stood carrying the farmer’s plough in his hands having saved us from famine.
Oh, who took birth on Rohini star and Ashtami thidhi of Avani month (August-September), Yasodha and Nanda’s son, grew with the Cowherds,
Who enjoyed company of ten thousand gopis, who conducted the Mahabharatha war
Who is Gopalakrishna, the primeval root, who looks after all.
Being summoned by Kali age, when people are not scared to commit the 5 great sins, engaging in fights, cheating and creating enmity,
For Dharma flourish, you took the friendly incarnation of Kalki,
Oh Lord who is very pretty, you are all the ten incarnations.

Excellent performance n wonderful scenery for this song.. 👏👏👍
Thank you so much! It was a task to film while adjusting to the changes in nature...a week long shoot!!
Wowowow! This just blew my mind. I've always been your fan, but this is the next level. I loooove how you use the setting- how Hiranyaksha runs away in this narrow corridor of rocks, how Narasimha jumps out of the rock, how cameraman goes down to give us the feeling of the huge Vamana rupa. And Krishna 😍😍😍! Just wow! Thank you for sharing and inspiring! Much Love from Latvia!
Thank you so much for your generous and kind words of appreciation. Humbled 🙏🏻 I follow your work too! Your keen observation shows how talented you are. Would love to collaborate someday

Wish English translation subtitles were there
Please expand the description box and you will see translation and meaning below. It is a conscious choice to not put it on screen as dance itself is a language and reading subtitles will distract from the visuals. Hope this helps.

Beautiful expression and body language.
Thank you so much!
Very nice except performance…..Sakthy from London
first question! why you call him ranganatha instead of shri mahavishnu?, really curious about it!!!
and second! why there is no buddhavtaram mentioned? what is ur personal opinion on it?
and atlast i felt to bow down my head at 13:56, 9:57 you crushed my ego to with bali's head, hey spiritual guru sukanya waiting for u to answer!!!
Oh my. Am no Guru! Gurus are those who show you a path to bliss....am just a messenger. The message is also not mine...it belongs to the art.
But thank you. I am touched that you were moved by this piece.
To answer your question: Sanskrit is a language of description. Eg. RAMA is not the name of a person but a description of his quality of gentleness. GANESHA means 'Isha' or lord of Ganas. So no one had a name, they had identities based on their acts. RAVANA means one who has a loud voice. Similarly, Ranganatha means the lord 'Naath' of the stage 'Ranga'. VISHNU means one who protects the Vishwa or universe. Both are "names" of the supreme power.
Buddha was considered an avatar in the tradition of Poet Jayadeva and others of that region, while other traditions believed that Krishna was the avatar. So this piece is written by the poet of the latter tradition
Also it is important to know that many poets were devoted to a particular deity in a particular temple, that's why in Tukaram's poetry, he doesn't just say "Krishna", but he says "Vitthala", and Meera always addresses Him as "Giridhari Lal" - that is the particular form of Krishna they worshiped. Regarding the Buddha avatar.... There are different Vaishnava sampradayas (4 to be precise- the school of Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka and Vallabhacharya) and their philosophy is also different. Jayadeva, who wrote Gita Govinda, belonged to the line of Madhva. And this is the only sampradaya that considers Krishna to be the source of all other avatars including Mahavishnu (Krishnastu bhagwan swayam). Other sampradayas consider Krishna an avatar of Mahavishnu. That is why in Jayadeva's dashavatar stotra, Krishna is not mentioned as one of the avatars, instead he praises Buddha, because there is indirect mention of Buddha as an avatar in the Bhagavata purana 🙏🙏🙏
