How on earth did this real life Superwoman escape the attention of the Hollywood megastar factory?? She is stunning in every aspect, I waited for decades to see her name appear in circles much larger than the elite climbing circles and the rarified air that they breathe. Yet we have clowns and wannabes taking up the slack with their ‘reality’ bullshit in all forms of media, wtf??
It's her choice. She never wanted to do anything she calls "fake", like climbing Eiffel Tower on camera and such. She carefully chooses her climbs for quality and rarity.
You are right. The answer to your question about "how" she has escaped from the medias, and Hollywood... , seems to be that it's definitly not her world. In the interviews (I'm french, I understand what she says) she seems to not bother about that stuff : ok for some money for one or two commercial, but not ok to change anything in my life. As a climber, she's a bit from another world, as a human being she's very cool.
I remember watching this at the Banff film festival when it was held at Sheffield university. Everybody moved to the edge of their seat when Catherine released the rope. Amazing, so glad I've found the film again.
Catherine frightens the pants off me , I fear for her every time I watch . In an age of overused and undeserved superlatives , this lady is , as they say , the real deal . She's genuinely incredible !

I didn't know her until youtube shows me this video. Now she is a new superhero to me, along Alex Honnold, Lynn Hill and Tommy Caldwell.
I remember her from TV, early 90s, bigwall solo ascents in the Alps. This was the time when she had her racing career over. She might be the most universal female climber ever.
Ce qui est admirable chez Catherine c'est qu' elle n'a jamais été une casse - cou inconsciente du danger dopée à l'adrénaline , mais qu' elle possède le vrai courage : le courage de prendre des risques conscients.
About 1990 I saw pictures of Catherine Destivelle in the rotpunkt magazine. It seemed very impressive. But movies were rare at that time, when I climed in my 20ties in the alps and the south of france. Now seeing her moves 30 years ago in free soloing makes me breathless. Catherine is absolut incredible and one of the best climbers in history.
I applaud the extraordinary skills of this climber........but I am appalled by the totally unnecessary bit of drama with the faked knotted rope getting snagged. There are two things that stand out clearly here.....1) A world class climber would make sure that the rope would not unfurl in such a manner as to leave knots and.....much more obviously!.....the camera crew could have simply un knotted the rope! Excellent footage ruined by this bit of fairy tale.
Kevin Jorgeson l’explique dans The Dawn Wall.
very nice video, thank you for posting. It shows her travelling through other buttes and mesas of the area. Shows the surrounding landscape and area, not just the tower..... very nice over all
I think it is more a dramatic effect for the show, I am just a rookie in climbing world, I don't even dare to compare my knowledge to her... She has proved many time her ability, knowledge and control in climbing AND mountaineering. But, I don't think any climber will put their belay device on the ground for the specific reason has been shown in the video ! If it is stuck you are fu**** ! Going solo has been her idea since the beginning of the climb, the rope, only for the drama :)!
She explains at the beginning that she isn't 100% comfortable with the size of the chimney and prefers to take a rope. She hunties the rope when she feels 100% OK.
C'est une très grande grimpeuse, après le vide s’apprivoise, on commence sur des rochers de quelques mètres de haut, puis de plus en plus, et on fini par ne plus regarder le vide de la même manière, il faut le respecter et rester conscient et concentré.

Im surprised there was no comments about the camera guy filming her every step of the way, even on the vertical climb. Perhaps other people were there to assist just in case.
In her books she tells quite the opposite, she gives a very hard time to the filming crew, she improvises many routes they have no chance to be able to follow, she disappears for entire days leaving them waiting in awkard positions, etc.
the cinematography and motion control are so good. 9/10 for me. specially considering the era it was shot in. there where most likely multiple filmers rigged on differnt parts of the wall ascending/descending fixed lines as she progressed on the wall
Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) actually unties their rope halfway up a climb. You climb devil's tower with a rope and then use the same rope to rappel back to the ground via rappel anchors.
This was exactly my thoughts. Only way this approach can make sense to me is if there is a crux in the lower part of the route that she wanted to be protected on. But I feel it might be just for the drama. I dont know french maybe it was explained.
