The most under-rated guy ever on the radio. Movie star handsome, brilliant songwriting, great singing, I think he got written off as a "pop pretty boy" and didn't get the airplay deserved or the promo effort from his label.

The change was bubbling in 1990. Grunge was about to blow up. Jude Cole and Brent Bourgeois' solo album were released the same year. Back then it was considered dad music in today's terms.

An unsung hero if there ever was one. Precociously talented. Everything, the complete package, with one crucial, essential element: sincerity. A View from 103rd Street is a masterpiece. Should’ve easily been album of the year. Song by song, note by note, riff by riff, there’s not a wasted moment. Don’t know or disagree? Put it on, in, whatever, drop the needle or just push play. Prove me wrong. It’s even sequenced perfectly. Always gets me through the night.

I just saw an interview with him that came out just last year, and he confessed to not liking the tour part of selling records, and coupling that with his desire to make the music that he wanted to make instead of trying to be a popstar made him had more into a producer and songwriter mode instead of trying to be in front. Now it all makes sense. He made three nearly perfect albums, and it wasn't what he really wanted.

The band members were crashed and I was driving them and pulling the trailer back to S. Carolina from Jacksonville. All I could think about was getting home to my sweetheart when I heard it for the first time back then. I still play it on those long trips back to her. We have never had a fight, but I feel lonely away from her. That night was very special when I melted with her and this will always be my coming home anthem.

This song is absolutely my favorite and it reminds me of the great talent that is lost to time. The stuff they call music now in the 21st century can't hold a candle to Jude. He gave so much from the soul and you won't see this kind of brilliance from any singer in this day and age because they have little to give from their soul. It's such a shame that we can't see this type of talent anymore.

Used to dance like a maniac to this tremendous song. For the longest time I only knew Jude Cole by his voice. When I finally saw him on television I thought "This guy should be a huge rock star with his movie star looks." All I can guess is that he has too much integrity to play the success game.
"Won't you please, please pick up the phone." // Jude Cole deserved / deserves big time success.

Yeah Butch, I had a shared apt. w/ a lounge band in orange co. I moved to LA in April of '78. Jude & I were 4 years apart in high school here in IL. He followed me out west & admitted to it being the first time he ever flew when he was on Leno. I only stayed for a year (I'm a player too) - he stuck it out & we've had very different fortunes. 30 plus years later, we're good - glad I know him.

In 1990, I was not a fan of pop music, it was either metal or classic or progressive rock, I worked at a music store when this album came out, I loved every song on the album, and still listen to it religiously. and got his three albums after this one, and loved them too. I finally last week found this album on vinyl, wish the others came out on vinyl, especially Start The Car.

This song should have been bigger but apparently got drowned by so many hits here and there in 1990 that you can’t choose what to listen. There’s Wilson Philips, Extreme, Sinead O Connor, heck even Mariah Carey, Maxi Priest. It was actually the period between 1988-1991 that almost all songs that came out were worthy of recognition.

I remember the fiirst time I heard this song. It is one of a handful in my whole life that had me set to buy the album before the lyrics even started. Then, I bought it, and found another two songs (Hallowed Ground and Time for Letting Go) that are at least as great. Why this work was not a hge hit, I'll never understand.

    • @willritter4076

it's because the bottom fell out of that 80s pop-rock sound just when Jude hit the scene in the early 90s. The 80s sound persisted into the new decade for a few years, but by late '93, the 80s were over and everything was either grunge or acoustic. Jude was unlucky with the timing, maybe he had some personal problems as well, who knows.

@@willritter4076 You're 100% right. The pop chart shifted between 1991 and 1992. The 80s were over and the kids wanted something different. Hell, I was at a town's baseball game in 1990 and the girls in the crowd were wearing flannel shirts. They predicted the trend...but they were cute. I love South Fayette/Bridgeville. Morgan Park had the cutest girls for 6 months.

I always wondered who sang this song; I just heard it on one of my local classic radio stations. I agree...definitely underrated without the acclaim he deserved. I think it was a classic example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. By 1990 rap/r&b music was all the rave and taking over the airwaves. Meaningful, well-written pop songs by "mature" artists like this simply got brushed under the rug, so to speak.

Criminally underrated artist. This album had zero promotion. I discovered him & the album when I won it from a south Florida radio station & played it til it wore out. This song is amazing. He plays dobro, 12 & 6 string guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, produced, arranged, and what a stunning singer & songwriter. I heard he stopped writing & performing & manages other artists now. What a shame someone so talented got zero support from his record label & the industry.

Let's just say, fame & fortune (or lack there of) has changed him little over the years. Puts on his pants like everbody else AND God has allowed him a very genuine gift - his voice, his hands & his heart. Hey

Freakin hell he was so damned good looking, probably still is. I've been listening to his music since the 80's. Never understood why his career didn't skyrocket. 3:)

Thanks for Professor of Rock reminding me I use to sing this at the top of my lungs while commuting to college. Sad state of radio made me completely forget this song.

That's a great point. What happened to MTV? In a galaxy long, long away they actually played music videos. Now, they have switched to somekind of reality based program. I am so sick of reality shows where the main theme is how drunk and stupid they can get! Wake up MTV!! There are still many people who would like to watch and listen to music videos. By the way, great song by Jude. Thanks for posting.

Jude Cole was in a band called The Records on Virgin Records. They were from London, England and Jude was the only American in the band. They released about 3 albums. The two main singers were John Wicks and Jude. Both of them are now part of the Los Angeles music scene. I wouldn't be surprised if Jude and John have done or will do a reunion tour with The Records, as they have a cult following with fans of power pop and punk music.

Jude was only on their second album, 'Crashes!' (1980), which is my favorite of their three albums. He really fit in with that band-it's a shame they weren't more popular as they had the goods. But then again, the competition back then was unbelievable. What a musical-rich era that was.

One reason he didn't make it as big as he or his fans may have wanted was because the contemporary icon of late 80s/early 90s young American Caucasian male solo pop-rock singer/writer/guitarist was already filled by Richard Marx, who dominated with 14 top 20 songs, 9 of those top 10, which included 3 number 1s.
However, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, none of which are Marx's.

What a great song, takes me back to the 90s. Absolutely a brilliant song. This guy is extremely underrated. I hope he is sitting wealthy somewhere enjoying his life.
