Ankle sprain. In the US there are around 4 million lateral ligament ankle sprains every year. The vast majority of these will resolve on their own. However, some sprained ankles simply do not get better on their own and ultimately require surgical stabilization.
Flat foot is a common condition which is often painful. Being flat footed means the normal arches of the foot have fallen. Surgical treatment is sometimes needed, resulting in flat foot reconstruction.
Ankle replacement surgery is now available as a treatment for severe arthritis of the ankle. Mild or moderate ankle arthritis are typically treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications with acid prevention, special shoes, inserts, physical therapy, steroid, or amnion derived stem cell injections. When these measure fail in the setting of severe ankle arthritis then ankle replacement should be considered.
During ankle replacement surgery the end of your leg bone (shin) and ankle are replaced with permanent implants. Dr. Flynn finds ankle replacement to be the most gratifying surgery he performs.
