Replace Control Board on a Honeywell Gas Valve | Water Heater

  • I replaced the Honeywell gas valve control board that FAILED on my water heater. Typically, the control board in the Honeywell gas valves fail, not the gas valve themselves. I didn't want to, or need to, replace the entire gas valve, so I just replaced the control board.

    Thanks! Great video. I got the Code 7 nightmare after turning my WH temp up above Hot to do some nasty wash. Tried all of the home fixes to the board, none worked. Cleaned the Thermocouple which seemed to temporarily work so I replaced it with a new one, still got the Code 7 after aa while. Next cheapest solution was to replace the Circuit Board. Followed your video step by step (including wearing rubber gloves to keep your hands clean but maybe more importantly keep static electricity off the Board) and it now works like a charm. :)

    Amazingly thorough video! I watched the troubleshooting video too and it got me to this point by troubleshooting and eliminating the other potential areas. Thank you for your. I had a local gas company come out for my water heater and they said it was leaking gas through the temperature control valve I'm thinking maybe there's an o-ring or something that went bad but in order to buy a new one I have to buy a whole new control valve which is like $400 can you just replace the organs that are bad

    Edit: it works! I've never been so happy to hear a water heater come on.
    Thanks for all the videos you've posted covering this. If nothing else I've learned a lot about how water heaters work.
    Checking everything, I'm left with the control board being the issue. I have a propane State Water Heater. It's a weird model number on the last four digits (WV8840B5077). Maybe because it's propane? -I'm just gonna roll the dice and hope one of the other WV8840 boards work since I can't afford the $150-$200 a new whole control assembly cost.- I found a Resideo that was meant for propane and it had the same model number, so I went with it.
    Our hot water heater is in an outbuilding, for some reason, so if it explodes it'll only take out the shed lol.

    So I just wanted to say you are amazing. We followed your troubleshooting videos step by step and it worked.ultimately found the thermoswitch had tripped. Likely from the amount of debris inside the protective shell on our heater which is outside. Wish we had heard you say the part about holding the pilot button in until the lights blink earlier might have saved us a few steps.

I also watched your other video about how to fix the 4 flashes issue before I watched this one. Sounds like maybe you had to replace the board after all. Yes, I did have to replace the failed control board, but I also had an issue with no pilot light due to the pilot tube orifice being plugged. so i ordered a new gas valve controller simply to be able to get the card inside. Then it dawned on me that the only requirement is to swap the new cover and its new card inside with the old cover and card inside. The only real task is to unplug the wires at the top and replug that in. So if you buy a new gas valve controller (about $130 on amazon), it's not necessary to replace the card only and is actually faster to replace the front cover, no need to mess with the internal screw and clips. Just be sure the black valve toggle switch matches the off position. You then also get the advantage of a new igniter button which was very stiff on my old one.

      @@davidsoudek E8 is the ground for the two gas valves (pilot and main burner). His pilot probably wouldn't come on. Not sure how that would have come loose unless the controller was opened up and possibly had the cover put back on crooked. You need to be very careful that everything is aligned properly when putting the cover back on because those three gas valve pins slide into E7, E8, and E10.

    Hi. Great video! Much appreciated!
    Question: have you ever had this happen: you press the temperature dial down in the "pilot" setting and press the igniter switch...then the pilot light comes on...but when you release the pilot light dial, the pilot light goes out. Hmmm....
    The gas line is good. The igniter and thermopile/thermopoule are good. But as soon as the dial gets released, out goes the pilot light.
    Have you observed this? What might be the problem, in your opinion?
    Thank you for your time and energy.

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  3 года назад +1

      Yes, Russell, I most certainly have and recently, too. I did A LOT of troubleshooting to determine the problem was the control board in the Honeywell gas valve had failed. I videoed the steps I took to troubleshoot the issue. If you care to see that video the title is "Troubleshoot Water Heater AND Honeywell Gas Valve." I think that video will help you. I show you how to test out the actual gas valve too.
      If you have a Honeywell gas valve, the other problem could be that the control board issued some "Status Error Code" (a blinking or flashing light at the LED status light), so now the control board on the gas valve will not allow you to ESTABLISHED (meaning you can light a pilot but it will not stay lit) a pilot light/flame. You have to override and reset the control board before you can light the pilot and have it remain lit and thereby operate your water heater in "normal" operation mode. I also have a video titled, "Honeywell Gas Valve 4 Flash FIX | High Temp Shutdown," that shows you how to override and reset the control board when the water heater has gone into "High Temperature Shutdown" status.
      I hope this helps you, and thank you for your kind words and appreciation.

      @frugaldiy1  3 года назад

      OH, you're very welcome, Russell. You have to be able to establish and maintain a pilot flame to override and reset the control board, so the "4-Flash High Temp Shutdown" video may not work for you. I do think the "Troubleshoot" video will show you how to both troubleshoot and determine the problem AND fix your water heater. I highly doubt you need a new water heater or a repair person. I'm pretty darn sure you can repair the water heater yourself. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I can help further.
      FYI--You likely have a thermopile, not thermocouple, on your burner assembly. Please test your thermopile if you haven't already done so. If a thermopile is weak (low voltage) or faulty, the pilot flame will not stay lit. It's a safety feature.

    Can anyone do me a favor and tell me where I can find the correct "model-number" located on the side of the gas control valve? The "model- number" currently on the gas control valve is (WV8840B1110). Honeywell advised the old model numbers starting with (WV8840) used for "atmospheric heaters" is being phased out for the newer (WT8840) (year 2020). I got a gas valve replacement error 4, over heated tank. And re-set the system to a normal 1 blink. Now, I get no spark and no indicator blinking lights. Honeywell advised the older WV8840 "requires" gas valve replacement if error 4, overheated tank, occurs even if the water inside the tank is not overheated to the ECO trip point of 188-199 F. Also was told most likely the error 4 blinking lights is a temporary misread and the water inside the tank did not reach 188-199 F, and the 4 blink error code came on due to a type of residue buildup in the tank. And was advised gas valves come out of calibration and have other problems, and its unavoidable that they do fail. And the older (WV8840) requies gas valve replacement if error 4, overheated tank, occurs. And the newer models (WT8840's) is more flexible, letting you reset error code 4 if the gas valve temperature sensor or circuit board has a temporary misread. I would like to purchase the correct Honeywell Gas control valve but unable to confirm the correct new model number to use since the old (WV8840) model numbers are being replaced with newer (WT8840) (year 2020)

    Hopefully someone can answer my question. I have a pilot light, but there is no status light. I keep pressing my finger on the pilot button, but no status light comes on.....even after 90 seconds. Nothing. I tested the thermopile......500 millivolts. I'm thinking the honeywell control board has failed. Model number for the honeywell is wv8860b1317. I looked up control boards on Ebay and there are only wv8840a1000. Can I replace my wv8860 board with a wv8840 board?

      Hi Jason. I can't say with certainty that the replacement board from a Honeywell gas valve that is a different model number than yours will work, but it did in my case. I took the chance, and it worked it worked like a charm.

      Look on eBay for the control board. Type in the model number of your gas valve and look for a control board. If by the "overheat issue, you mean a 4-flash high temperature shutdown, I have a video to reset that issue. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/rllnMAx05JI/видео.html

      @@frugaldiy1 - Thank you for the quick reply, I knew about that fix the past several months, but earlier today I got no spark from the igniter, unplugged it, plugged it back together and now I get spark and a pilot flame, but even after over 90 seconds, I still get no status light. I checked the thermocouple with a multimeter like in your video and it checked out, so im thinking either a bad motherboard or a bad thermal safety switch maybe? Yep, based on what you've said, it does appear as though the motherboard is faulty. I'd get a pre-owned board off a eBay. There are sellers on eBay who are plumbers, and they sell pre-owned entire gas valves and just control boards that they pull from working water heaters they replace. I think a control board would get your dear mother back in business and enjoying warm showers again. Thank you for helping your mother. ;)

      @@frugaldiy1 that's what I thought. Do you have a step-by-step video of how to replace the unit? I've looked at others, but I like your presentation. What is your recommendation for a new valve? The model number of the heater is MI5036FBN. Thank you for your expertise.

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  2 года назад

      No, Lindy, I don't have a video on replacing the gas valve. I'd only ever do that if the valve were leaking water at the location where it goes/screws into the water heater. I don't have a recommendation re a new valve because I don't know the brand or setup of your water heater. I'd have to see it. You change change the temp sensor without removing the gas valve body, but it's a bit complicated. The model number you gave me is for the actual water heater itself, but when you search for a new gas valve, you need to search by model number of the gas valve. It's on the side of your gas valve.
      But, before you go through all the hassle of changing this or that, were I you, I'd take the cover of the gas valve off again and make sure the temperature sensor wires are plugged securely into the board. That little connection can be finicky, and it must be plugged into the connection securely.

    • @frugaldiy1
      @frugaldiy1  Год назад

      Jesus, you have to remove the gas valve cover and board from the back of the cover. Then, you slowly rotate the temp knob while tilting it to the side a bit, until you "feel" a location where the knob will come out. Remove the knob. There is a tension spring behind the knob, so be careful to not misplace that. You put the new knob on the same way you took the other knob off.

      A G, put the shaft of the control knob into the hole on the cover and rotate the knob a little at a time, back and forth, while leaning the knob to the side a bit. It will pop in place. Don't forget to put the spring in, too.

      @@digablesoul The knob has a spring behind that you don't want to lose. You have to turn the knob slowly and rotate or tip it slightly to the side to remove it at just the right spot. Just go slow and be careful and gentle with it.

    Thank you for the videos, they helped me pinpont the control board. The w/h won't turn off the burner if you dial heat up to HOT. We realized this after the sink hose blew and burned my wife! Gives steady warm water below the Hot setting. Unfortunately, I cannot locate a board for the WV8880B1211 propane control valve. You said the WT series don't let you reset the 4-blink error (which I never actually saw), but WT board may be my only choice. I got one reply telling me to take a picture of the board. Can you recommend a substitute from another vendor? Waiting on a reply from State Industries, who made the W/H.

      @frugaldiy1  2 года назад +1

      Ralph, I'm glad to were able to pinpoint the problem. Great job! As to the control board, please type the model number of your gas valve into eBay and see if a seller has a pre-owned or new LP (propane) control board or gas valve. I, personally, wouldn't buy from Honeywell directly. Some of the sellers on eBay are plumbers who have pulled working gas valves and control boards from an install or job. If you don't find what you need, message one or a couple and ask if they have one or can get you one. Don't be discouraged; you'll find one. Please comment back if you need more info or help.

    • @frugaldiy1

      It should be under warranty, so I'd ask for a replacement. If the insulation around the gas valve is wet, the problem is likely that there is leak where the gas valve goes into the the water heater tank. Look under the gas valve to see if water is dripping from it.
