The only thing that doesn’t make PC handhelds “Consoles” is the fact that they don’t have a closed ecosystem/OS. All consoles are technically computers. If it is another hybrid console, and they price it at $350, then maybe. At $400, it could break 100M lifetime sales with the right games, but I doubt it will reach the success of the Switch. (If they introduce a strategic price cut later down the line, that may help sales enough to match the Switch as well.) They will also need to give it lots of time on the market, just like they have with the Switch.

WILD IDEA: yes... have the Switch 2 get all the various upgrades to meet modern standards. But here is a proposed kicker: throw in a "Retro Slot" that will accommodate DS and 3DS cartridges along with the SD Card slot. BAM! The Switch 2 is not only brand new but is also RETRO. This would give Nintendo a chance to recapture all those previous owners/players who have a DS/3DS that has worn out. Both Old & New in one system. That is my Wild Idea.

I liked the concept of the Wii U. I think if you were able to keep the functionality of the Switch, but rather than having to dock the switch, you could somehow connect it wirelessly to a central hub of sorts if you wanted to play it on your screen (You'd still have the option to connect it to the dock if you wanted the upscale in resolution). Then you could still utilize your switch as a type of game pad or standalone handheld. I think that would be the best natural progression of sorts which would also allow the implementation of older games such as Xenoblade X if trying to port the game was too difficult.

Switch-2 gimmick will be "use any gen1 or gen2 Switch as a second-screen controller". Just like the Wii-U gamepad worked. Pair up to 4 Switches.
This is the best explanation for why they are adding new themed Switch SKUs and accessories so close to the reveal of the Switch-2.
Also explains why Zelda WW HD and TP HD haven't been released to switch yet. They want to maintain that second-screen experience that the Wii-U gave for those games.
Imagine 4 switches paired to a tv connected Switch-2 console, for couch co-op games. They all get the second screen experience (compared to with Wii-U you could only have 1 screen gamepad connected).

Personally I don’t see it being as successful but I see it doing fairly well if Nintendo makes proper upgrades and offers some much sought after features as well. Beyond that if it can run at a stable and consistent level I think it’ll do amazingly well.
The thing about the Switch outside of reviving handhelds in a way with its hybrid design, it was also incredibly slingshot by how poorly the Wii U performed. People wanted something new and better and the switch was that in almost every way to where we had the running gag of the Wii U being a beta test for the switch.
Whats gonna define this new Switch is how much of an upgrade it really is. Not even just at the hardware level but also at the software level. It needs a solid launch and to finally have some core assets that Nintendo has tended to be more avoidant on.
Just to name a few things
    - an overall better online infrastructure
    - a better UI/UX with customization options
    - A better eshop experience overall
    - consistent and stable frame rates
    - better onboard storage (SSD)
In short it needs to feel like a better more complete hybrid that hopefully this time around will pace a bit better throughout its life cycle with a good feature set that should be expected at this stage in gaming.Pair that with good indie and third party support alongside Nintendos games and we got a winner.
And I’ll say this once more. DO NOT UNDERCLOCK THE SYSTEM SO HEAVILY

Also, Nintendo should stop with these names and just call it Switch 2 to make it clear what this is.

Only other thing we can do is express our wishes so personally for me I want to see the return of Virtual Console, and the carrying over of our VC games we bought digitally back then (the other two do it so its time for Nintendo to join them).
I also want to see OLED be the normal screen now, if the Vita had it the Switch 2 can have it too.
Lastly I would like to see a better dock that allows the normal and Lite model to plug into the TV, also a dock design where I can put the joycons in a separate compartment from the main system so they arent sticking out like a sore thumb (looks silly in my living room tbh).

Personally, I don’t think the Switch 2 will live up to the Switch’s success for a couple of reasons. The first reason is because of the fact that the new console needs to introduce a new gimmick that separates it from its predecessor besides transitioning from a handheld to a home console. On top of that, most parents with little kids won’t be buying this because in their eyes, the current line up will be cheaper than the Switch 2 and will be plenty enough to suffice their kids.

unless the hardware is actually something revolutionary, i don't see it selling too well. Only reason to upgrade would be if you have an OG launch Switch or Switch lite. Switch OLED owners like me have little incentive to upgrade

The only reason the 3ds failed was the same machine but with a weak upgrade to 3d and the $50 price hike, if the switch 2 is a different machine, it should be a fine console.

Most certainly not, sequel systems rarely sell as much as what came before (especially with no pandemic to boost Switch 2 sales). But I do think that, assuming Nintendo doesn't fumble the bag somehow (which happened with the 3DS with it being overpriced at launch), the Switch 2 will comfortably sell over 100 million units by the end of its run. Though I doubt Nintendo sees the portable PCs like the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally as competition, especially when the Steam Deck isn't even sold at retail. 90% of the potential audience for the Switch 1 & 2 don't really know that said handheld PCs exist, with mostly gaming enthusiasts like us overhyping them.
As for the Switch 1 passing the PS2's 155-160 million units, I think there's a decent chance it'll barely pass it. Though if Nintendo wants to make that an inevitability, they may want to consider a Switch 1 price drop. Between the relative lack of major sellers this holiday season (with only Super Mario Party Jamboree guaranteed to sell at least 10 million) & the Switch 2 potentially being revealed later this year, there are a lot of things that can cut the Switch 1's legs short. A price drop or more aggressive bundles could help off-set those roadblocks.

I think for me, because I feel like my PS5 will last a while, especially as it's only use atm is a poor amount of Triple A games and watching media, I think the next Switch could be the big gaming console for me, a new animal crossing, maybe some bigger experiences due to "as powerful as ps4 and xbox one, and the possibility of backwards compatibility
Let's just hope that price isn't too much, I already have Lego as a hobby lmao, stuffs expensive!!!!!!
Due to all that, I think it could be big, because they're never going to be the same as Xbox and PlayStation, and that's exciting enough

  • @mbphilipblack8993

I don't know if it can surpass the Switch as it depends how many people migrate/upgrade. The system needs to have significant improvements or otherwise they'll be no reason.
And those who already have a switch have one now there's only a few new buyers left and if the new one is costing 400+ compared to the 300-250 you can get now that will probably play the same games i doubt the switch 2 or Switch U will sell well in it's first couple of years.
The game Library is the KEY even without Backwards Compatibility it still needs to be strong and i doubt Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be Exclusive to the successor the first few games tend to be cross generational but it could be a situation like "Only for New Nintendo 3DS" or "Only for New Nintendo 2DS" so we'll see amd it'd push units lol.

I hope Nintendo learned from the WiiU era, and instead introducing some new gimmicks to the switch, they should just improve the specs and fix the issues like stickdrift etc. I think people are really used to the concept as it is today and everyone seems familiar with it. Ppl just want a more powerful console. I think a simple specs bumbed up switch will be more successful than a switch with some new gimmicks no one asked for

my predictions for the next nintendo console:
    - it will be a cloud only device and it will only work with an internet connection
    - they will no longer sell physical media
    - they will offer some bullshit for sale like "amiibo cards" as replacement for physical games
    - the console will be cheap, but it will be a significantly inferior product compared to the switch
    - it won't be backwards compatible but they will offer a "subscription" where you can buy/rent cloud-based switch games
    - the latency for online games will be just as bad as it is now if not worse due to overcrowded servers
those are my biggest concerns regarding nintendo's direction. like it or not nintendo has a lot more similarities to apple than any of their fans want to admit.

  • @chriscmb

I don't know of it the switch successor will will live up to the swith because the ones at this time that will buy it will be gamers. If it's not much of a difference in specs and capabilities or uniqueness, most parents may not buy their kids the next switch like they did before. Their kids may already have games they can play on it or they play on it as much as they should to warrant an upgrade for them. That's the only thing I can see for that. Now if they switch all their attention only to the new system and stop having games for the older ones and all the cool new games come out only on the new one, then yeah they may be able to sell more. Also on that of the successor is as powerful as rumored then there will be more games being posted over like they do to the ps4. Then yeah it will be bigger.

I don’t think the Switch 2 is going to live up to the sales of the original Switch, but it doesn’t need to. I believe Nintendo is trying to market the Switch 2 as a hardcore gamers’ Switch that’s considerably more powerful and could compete with most of the other consoles on the market. Metroid Prime 4 alone is a compelling reason why a Switch upgrade would be so enticing for a gamer like me.

Will it replicate how good the Switch is? Silly people over here, it will with 99% certainty be better. Will it replicate the popularity and cash inflow tho? No. Nononono. People may have forgotten, but the Switch's first 2 years were a direct product of the WiiU's failure. Of course, there are megafans like me who got it regardless, but I have heard so many people that were starving themselves of new Nintendo content for the entire WiiU's time in the sun and were desperate to get a Switch for new content.
People are oversaturated now if anything with that many good games coming to Switch. It will still sell, but there is no shot of it mirroring what happened back then.

Highly doubt a Switch 2 could possibly live up to the Switch, unfortunately. It created a market that now has real competition. The good news for Nintendo is they won't port stuff over, and that helps them. And to your point, much like the PS4/5, the Switch 2 has to make a case to Switch owners that may be hard to make for some time.
If Nintendo wants to succeed, they need to sell people on the upgrade, and I know how... with DUAL SCREENS.
As an aside, it's wild how well the Switch has done compared to PS2, considering the latter was also the primary media player in a lot of homes.
