My neighbour's horse took a liking to me years ago. We have a strong bond and he is proof to me that he possesses great intelligence and compassion. He gets out of his pasture and heads to my house on an almost daily basis. You've not lived until you open your front door to have a gigantic horse walk right past you and enter your den. I think he thinks he's a dog. But, he's a brilliant companion and is no trouble at all. I can put him back in his pasture by simply walking him over. No tricks, no gimmicks. He just follows and waits for me to open the gate. There's such intelligence in those eyes of his and he's always been very gentle with me. I adore him!
So very nice to be loved and have a devotee (loving comment). Animals are amazing, nothing surprises me. You are truly blessed to be loved by this horse. Cherish every moment, life is too short. Best regards to all out there. 🎈
@Marisol white Jesus? White Guy. Cleopatra? White girl. Samurai Fighter? White guy (well, the good one, the others are just extras). Probably my "favorite" are the many, many early television shows depicting Native Americans as mass attackers and white people merely "defending themselves".

Statues of Jesus & the Saints have been made for the population. There are statues of Bl Mary holding the Child Jesus & they appear to be Japanese & black statuary in predominately Black countries. Chinese looking Mary & Jesus... So, you're barking up the wrong tree.
My question is why are we just learning about this now. This kind of story should be in history books! So glad that you bring us these wonderful stories❤️
@@janethefriend-awakened33 seems history of those doing good doesn’t qualify as interesting history to “those who elect themselves qualified to state facts as history” regardless of race. That should be written facts in textbooks and perhaps readers would elect to read more, having more positive reading material to choose from. According to race, absolutely this story shines a bright light on this particular black man of high inelegance and warm heart, so I understand why in that time it may have been a factor unfortunately, just as if it had been a female. Beautiful truth has always been and continues to be an offense to the nay sayers of a culture trying to create a negative generation regardless of race or gender is most likely the reason we haven’t read this beautiful and brilliant story. Hoping to see a Morgan Freeman movie soon. That sure would be a step in the right direction! :) If we could vote on this, it would surely come to fruition soon I trust. Thank you.
My friend posted this on fb and encouraged people to watch it. So when I clicked on the link and saw that it was 15 minutes long, I thought, “I don’t have time to watch this. I have too much to do.” But I started watching it, and, to my dismay, it was only 15 minutes long! I didn’t want the story to end. It was lovely, just a beautiful story. Thank you, David Hoffman, for the story and the way you told it. I look forward to hearing your other stories as well, and may they all be, at the very least, 15 minutes long...
Great story! I have heard about Jim. My friends Grandaddy had a mule named Fella who watered the other animals everyday. He would pull around a long water hose from the barn spigot turning the water on with his nose, water all the troughs and would finish by watering Granny's garden. EVERYDAY except Sunday. He would sleep all day on Sunday. When I knew Fella he was 24 years old. He was buried in a secret place surrounded by family and friends. Looking forward to the film.
@@shakeybritches8089 I was told that when Fella was very young, his mother got sick and died, he was hand nursed by my friends Grandad and Granny. As he grew up he would follow them around doing "chores" and one day he was playfully trying to pull the water hose out of someone's hand and they began letting him help pull the hose around. As the folks got older and slower he seemed to just want to help. The water valve was a no-freeze type with a handle that lifted up to open and they taught him to turn it off and on. Of course they made a big deal about it and started giving him an apple or something else as a reward. After several years Granny would show him how to hold the hose and do the watering. It became his job most days and he just kept it up. Except on Sundays, which is the part that I always thought was so amazing. Grandad would say he was a "Good Christian" and took his day of rest like the rest of the family very seriously.
Why haven't I heard of this infamous horse? I'm 73 years old, and this is the first time I ever heard of Jim Key. What a delightful story! I want to see the movie. INCREDIBLE HORSE!!!
Me either!! I'm 73 also and I stood 5 feet away from the likes of Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Forego, Affirmed, Ruffian..........I could go on & on!! Saw those GREATS at the Track!!
I’m 55 and have heard of it, I guess it depends what part of the country we all grew up in, and what schools decided, at that time period in life, what was more important to learn about.
I am 74 and until now, never heard of the horse. There is one thing I know though, it was not 'infamous'. INFAMOUS: (Adjective) well known for some bad quality or deed; wicked; abominable. Jim Key was most definitely, famous!
The irony. I wouldn't have heard this great story without the internet and you wouldn't have found it without the old drafty used bookstore. We need to value and preserve the integrity of both.
I'm from Shelbyville,. We were never taught this story, and I was in my 60's before I heard about it. We used to comment that the best thing to come out of Shelbyville was US-231, but now I can proudly move Jim Key to the top of that list.
I've always had animals around me since I was little. One thing I've noticed is the more time you spend with them building a connection the more you come to have an unspoken language with them and that applies to all sorts of different animals. I don't work so I'm with my two dogs 24/7. They are both special in their own way but one in particular understands every word. If my husband and I are talking she knows what we are saying. I don't mean typical trigger words like "food" "sit" "walkies" . Yesterday I said something about changing the curtains and she walked over to the window to have a look. Recently I said "have you seen the tv remote control?" and although I wasn't talking to her she went and found it behind the couch. If I get a phone call from my parents saying they are coming over and she hears the conversation she will watch the driveway because she knows they are coming. I mean I could list examples all day.
Being a horse owner for over 50 years and having devoured every great horse book I could find over the years beginning the moment I could read, I was surprised to find this book a few years ago. It's an incredible story that I had never heard of before. I hope they do make this into a movie. The story is so unbelievably wonderful, it could only be true. I heartily recommend it for anyone to read. You don't have to be a horse lover to enjoy the story of Dr. Bill Key and Beautiful Jim Key.

@Rebecca Carlson I second that Rebecca! David Hoffman is just amazing at making films and telling stories, don’t you just adore this mans history he shares?
It's probably the leftist because they just learned the truth about how they were lied too in school about the civil war, and how blacks were actually part of the family , and refused to listen to the rest of the story when he got to that part.
This is my favorite new story. I agree that the world should know the story of this exceptional man and his exceptional horse ... This story makes my heart sing ...
I am thrilled to think that this, my favourite book for many years, is destined to be a movie. I stumbled upon this story in 2008 and have recommended it to all my horse friends for years. Thanks for saving that pamphlet
I'm 58 now and when i was young i remember my great grandmother telling me about a horse that could count, read, spell and add. I thought she was stretching it and the horse was just doing tricks. Maybe this was the horse she was talking about. She would have been 17 yrs at the time of the world's fair. I think she went to it because she did have some things in her home on display from the fair.

Dear Nancy, Why are you waiting for the movie. You have many horses. Pick one "clumsy" and make another Jim. When I was a child, my family had a horse (South of Bosnia and Herzegovina-Europe, to be precise) who never had let any wolf to hurt either him or other horses that belonged to the family and neighbors. Also in the book Empire of the Summer Moon, it has been described how Kwanah Parker, the las Comanche chief trained his horse to help him to pick wounded worriors and bring them to safety. Nancy, you can do it. Good luck,
A few have. Been at least as intelligent as a 4 to 6 yr old human. That said I have not spent 24/7 with any of them. So in actuallity I could see one or more of the higher smart horses being capable of doing at least some of the things report to be capable by this horse. One mare I owned from birth to death 33yrs. Was capable of checking the mail by voice command. Going to certain other people's place to carry a msg and be sent home by the recipient. Capable of being taken away from her barn on property and quite literally slowing me to lay down and hold stirup and being told drag me to the barn and doing so without stepping on me dragging besides her. Counting to ten. Choosing her choice of food for dinner. That's pretty good for a horse if you ask me
@@dragonstonegemironworkscra4740 His mother was an Arabian horse, so no wonder he was so intelligent. For generations Arabian horses lived in the same tents as the owners and they are extremely smart.
My beautiful Tennesse Walker/Fox Trotter named Shadow had to be put to sleep 2 weeks ago at about 30 years old. He was my best friend and such a gentleman. He took good care of his pasture mate Sugar protecting her from all the creatures of the night. I know I will get over this loss, but it's still really painful. He was one of a kind. I know all horse lovers understand. I'm excited to see the Jim Key movie.
I am so very sorry for the loss of your friend, your companion, your loved one. It is so agonizing and heart-wrenching when our beloved family member has to be put to sleep. I grieve with you. I had to make that same decision ~2 years ago for my beloved Lucy, for her sake. The decision you made was enormously loving. And terribly heartbreaking. The pain and grief subsides over time. I still grieve for Lucy. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Fatima.
I was lucky enough to have a horse like that for my best friend for 26 years. I miss him every day. I’m so sorry for your loss but you have been lucky to have ever experienced that connection. I doubt I ever will again.
What a very cool story! Thank you for bringing it to life. I'm 69, amazed at the stories we hear nothing about...and I'm also a professed horse nut, currently the owner of my daughter's wild-caught Mustang, Annie, who is now 17yo. I adopted her as a 2yo, when my daughter was 12. I love a good historical story...and have read Seabiscuit, Wild Horse Annie and The Last of The Mustangs, The Eighty-Dollar Champion...and still have to read The Perfect Horse, and The Ride of Her Life. Read every Black Stallion book in the library when I was young. Sure wish I had known about all the others I've collected. Not only great stories about the horse, but such a great way to really understand the history that was going on at that time. Thank you again! You have a new subscriber.😊
Why people are disliking such a real and inspiring story, here in this world we can't trust our own blood, and there is a horse who is trusting human, a great story and lesson to learn ❤️
@Charm301 Oh and how do you know it's a lie. Beyond your comprehension that there just might be a plantation owner with a teeny bit of humanity? How did this Black man Bill Key, make such a success of himself then? There had to be a positive in his upbringing. You are TOO close minded to accept it.
We had a horse back in the 80's named Brandy that would go around every morning and let all the other animals out of their stalls. He would let the chickens out and their coop had a door with a standard house doorknob, so we didn't think he could have been doing it. We had come to the conclusion that a person was sneaking onto the farm at night and doing all this stuff to be mischievous. One night, me and my Dad decided we would catch the perp and give them a good talking too. We went down and set up a blind and sat there all night and never saw a thing until the next morning around 5:00am. What we saw had us laughing so hard it hurt. There was Brandy, going from one stall to the next opening every door and greeting each animal individually like he was making sure they had a good night sleep. When he got to the chicken house, he wrapped his lips around that doorknob and had to contort his whole body to get the doorknob to turn enough to release. That was the funniest part. He pushed the door open and stood there until all the chickens cleared his hooves. (That's a story in itself. A few years prior to this, he had stepped on a chicken and killed it. After that incident, every time a chicken was close to him he would stop moving until he knew the chicken had cleared his hooves.) Brandy lived to be 28 years old. One day he didn't come back to the barn, so we went searching for him. He was laying under an oak tree in a pasture we call "The Hill". An interesting tidbit about Brandy is that my Dad purchased him at auction from the Atlanta, Georgia Police Department. For the first 20 years of his life he was part of the mounted patrol in Atlanta. It was our understanding that a Police Officer had been shot off his back. We aren't sure if that is true or not, but that's what we were told by someone at the Auction. David Hoffman - Thank you for posting this video. It conjured up a lot of great memories for me and my Dad. My Dad is 87 years old now and talking about all this made him laugh just as hard as we did back in 1985. The bad part is... I feel like I need to go out and buy another horse!
I so cried reading ur story. I have always felt I was a horse person. I grew up riding and understood I wanted to own a horse farm. Thank u for sharing ur story.

Bill was raised by a wonderful man; he in turn grew up to be a wonderful man, and then came Jim Key and Monk...wonderful animals...kindness creates greatness, loved the story
Growing up, I had an Arabian stud horse. He was a very smart horse. Like Jim Key, he also would answer questions we asked him with head shakes, nods, & whines. He also would paw the ground to respond to us. Arabians are very intelligent & loving horses. I hope they make a movie about this horse.
Yes my Arabian got upset and off standish when I would come home from college. All though he was always a little rebeal, Cricket was smart.. and might have had greater potential. This has to be one of the most interesting / incredible stories I have ever come across. This story covers the American Civil War, slavery, The Humane Society, an incredible human being by the name of Bill Key and a beautiful intelligent horse Jim Key. This is American history at its best. I would have loved to have met Bill Key and watched Jim Key in action. I showed this film to my mother and she absolutely loved it. She said she could listen to David Hoffman all day as he has such a lovely voice. She has also seen the film with Nette Mitchell about Emmalane. We are now going to see what other amazing films you have made.
I think whatever organizations plan what people are featured for black history month dropped the ball by not finding this, correct me if they did, but a moment with google didn't show anything.
any man..has the ability for great things, Bill, Jim Key's Caretaker was given respect and an opportunity, in a time when white men didn't do that kind of thing on a regular basis, many minds were repressed because of racism, and the lack of opportunities given them
That isn't more amazing. There were a number of slaves that became successful after being freed. How many horses had such a career? One is unique, the other is not.
I've heard this story. I have family who moved into the Shelbyville TN area 20 years ago or so, and started hearing versions of this story. It's a helluva story and would be a wonderful and motivational film. I hope you can get this done.

Aside from his very unique ability to tell a story the production quality, camera angle, set up, framing, speed, length, content, etc of his youtube video was spot on. The DVD should honor them by including a pledge to be kind to animals that kids could send to the Humane Society. I bet there would be more than 2 million.
We as humans do not give animals enough credit, I have a medical alert service dog" Cocco" He's 10 yrs old. I have seen my dog do amazing things. My neighbor n his dog who is female doesn't like children . One day the dog got away from the owner n went after a child walking by , my dog chased after her, grabbed her leash n down stayed her. He kept her leash in his mouth until the owner got there. I didn't tell my dog to do this. He saw a problem n took action . The whole time the naughty female dog tried n tried to get away from Cocco, but he wouldn't let her go . He stopped her from bitting that child.
First, dogs are more intelligent than horses blue they aren’t naturally skiddish from being prey for, well, forever and horses can not spell no matter how much you want to believe it. Just wondering if that guy killed any white people trying to free the slaves while fighting for the south?
That is such a wonderful story! Your so lucky to have such a special incredible companion.....take care! P.s never mind the " horses ass" that left you the ridicuolos comment...God bless....
Kathleen, the dog story is a better one than the “story” told about the horse. Yes, horses are intelligent but most of what the horse did were simple tricks taking place at a circus where it is highly controlled to get the maximum amount of money from people like you. Also, why was Key looked at as a positive character while fighting for the south. I thought we couldn’t have that anymore?????????????? Did he kill or try to kill any intelligent human trying to release his people from slavery???????????? This seems like another Hollywood movie and what I mean by that they exaggerate everything because real life is boring.
I promise you if that dog was around these parts where I'm at we would kill that female plain and simple not going to take no Chances with that stupid shit need to crack her skull with a baseball bat or spend about four pennies on a 22 shell
I LOVE HORSES! Riding our neighbor's mare as a child changed my life. Riding her instilled in me a warm feeling of safety and comfort. I recall that warm gentle feeling when I am upset. I can feel her to this day. I have kept pictures of horses around me all my life. Horses are a gift from God. 💙
Loved this story. I sure hope they make a movie. I had a horse when I was a teenager. Raised him from a colt. I can attest to their intelligence. Love, patience and kindness goes a long way. The things I taught him in his short time was near and dear to my heart. I will never forget the unique bond we had.

One of thee most heart worming stories I've ever heard. I hope your movie is a box office smash, for animals worldwide. Someone needs to put an end to animal cruelty NOW !
Right there with you on that! They need harsher consequences! Jail time for these idiot's, not just a slap on the wrist! This guy in my area tortured a dog to death and only got three months Unsupervised probation! What? He should have went to prison for at least of ten years! Or LIFE! If you can kill a dog, you could kill a person in my opinion, and we don't need people like that on our streets!
That is a wonderful story! I`ve never heard of him before(and this is coming from a horse nut(when I was 10+ years old)). My mother got me a pony when I was 12 and I loved him more than anything! When I got older and unable to afford to board him anymore, I let him stay at the farm he had been living at for 12+ years, and he had his friends. He died about 30 years ago. RIP Comanche boy!
Jeff: even though he had a big whole in his heart when u left him arranging him to stay at the same stable really helped him. I hate it when all these horses form attachments with both humans and animals and then they are just sold. Breaks my heart and the horses as well. Yes they are impacted when they are bounced from stable to stable. Yes they form attachments. Yes they have emotions. And they are very, very soulful creatures.
My horse Primo, was my Alarm clock, at 6:30 every morning he’d push my door open from the back of my room and just come in❤️ I miss you Primo and my childhood!

I thank this man for bringing it forward along with all who have done this for other great historical stories. I hope more come because the topics of today's movies made out of nothing, are just that....nothing.
Love horses. Great story. Only doubted Jim Key's intelligence once, when he approved the Democrat Party. The party that founded the Ku Klux Klan and voted against the the 13th Amendment (abolished slavery), the 14th Amendment (citizenship of slaves) and the 15th Amendment (the right to vote.) Other than that, he was a truly amazing horse!
Isn't it a shame that many had never heard of this beautiful story before. I thoroughly enjoyed your telling of this story. I cant wait to see the movie.
One of my horses once saved me from a vicious dog who was stalking me to attack me. I was on foot and my horse came down from the hill and chased the dog away viciously.
My daughter was in a wagon wreck with her coach. They were both thrown from the wagon and received non critical injures, (my girl got a concussion and eight staples in her head) but you know that you take a few to gain your senses. Those horses waited by them. They didn't just head for the barn.
I had a stallion that would kill dogs, woodchucks, possoms and raccoons that ventured into the paddock. My neighbors quickly gave up on letting their sport dogs into the field to chase the horses.
Your right! But some people will always stay blind... Gods creation is wonderfull and he made every animal with great love. We should care about our animal brothers and sisters.
It is a wonderful story. I am a horse lover, so I heard about him many years ago. I remember hearing at some point that certain people tested him to try to debunk it because they thought there was some trick to it. I thought, what difference does it make?! No matter how you look at it, he is really intelligent! I have trained many horses in my life, as well as other animals and the key I've discovered is love and trust. If you build a relationship with ANY "sentient being" (as it was so beautifully said), that being will do anything possible to return that kindness. I always say, Every day I strive to be the person that my dog thinks I am! Well, that goes for any animal! Because animals always give you the benefit of the doubt!
Yes! The world needs to see just how intelligent horses are! My stallion is only two years old and can play fetch, he can bring you a drink from a cooler, he puts his toys away in the toy box. He can sit, bow, lay down, give you a kiss, smile, the possibilities are endless if only we treat them with kindness and respect.
David Hoffman is a brilliant artist to have the insight all years later to see the value of his work. I enjoy the interviews immensely. Thank you Mr Hoffman sir. ❤
Our Palomino horse, Zap, was quite the character. He would answer me with loud return whinny's when I called to him. He developed as a guardian- Zap would give a very distinct, "come asap" call when anything was wrong. Examples- the water trough was tipped over, a horse was in trouble, someone got hurt, etc. It was amazing and we all knew if we heard that call to drop everything and get to the horses.
I've got my popcorn and I am sooooo ready to see this movie; this fella had me transfixed upon the screen. What a beautiful story, it got me feeling quite emotional. It shows what can blossom if we treat both humans and animals with love, compassion and curiosity.
We had a horse named Major. My brother bought him when I was six years old and I learned to ride him bareback because we were poor and couldn’t afford a saddle. When we moved to the edge of a small town, our neighbor next-door let us keep Major in their fenced pasture. He would break out once in a while and would come up on our front porch and stick his head in our door. A reporter for the local newspaper happen to see him do it and took his picture and it was in the newspaper. He was the best horse you could ever imagine, so gentle.
I first fell in love with horses as a child when I read a book by Walter Farley. From then on, I read every book I could get my hands on about horses, and watched every movie. And this is the first time I ever heard of Jim Key. Thank you for this story. I loved it! God Bless you!!
I grew up with horses and other animals. They were all intelligent when you respect them (kindness), and they trust you. Make the movie!!! Lots of stories in this world. I too have one. Mr. Hoffman, this was such a delightful story. There was nothing bad that happened to him, and the people were good to him, and that was so nice. Thank you so much!
I actually have never found it hard to believe that animals are intelligent but more than that some are wise, knowing, understanding and capable of unconditional love. Moreover, animals are healing and they come into our lives to help us awaken a part of our soul that we didn’t even know existed. They also give us strength and the will to keep trying 💕 Animals are amazing 🤩
I completely understand why you love Stories Mr. Hoffman...and my main reason is the Wonderful Way You TELL The Story! And to think your part in this mesmerizing tale's start is from a simple pamphlet which you discovered in an unheated Book Shop! John Key, who raised Bill Key as if he was his own Son and of course The Star being Jim Key The Horse. I absolutely hope that this does in fact become a movie. The Lessons from this story are numerous AND the awareness to teach children to appreciate animals, let alone anything living, resonates more so in the times that we live in now. You Sir give your Fans Stories through the Lens....but you also verbally paint a picture of life that I shall think of many times down the road....Thank you! Cheers From Ohio
The real star was Bill Key, because only he had the intuitive knowledge to see and feel the intelligence of the horse, NOBODY else did that, NOBODY! The story is about the former slave boy turned man that had the insight, wisdom, intelligence and patience, foresight and drive to mke this whole thing happen!
@@conniewolf7300 Wrong. This is a story about trust. Because of the way Bill Key treated the horse, the horse TRUSTED him. If Bill hadn't treated the horse with love and understanding, the horse's intelligence never would have come to the fore.

This is a remarkably inspiring story told by a brilliant storyteller. It's so beautiful, in every way and demonstrates the beauty and reality of genuine love and kindness and where this can take you. However for me it's tinged with sadness when I consider this old lost world that no longer exists anymore. Yeah...by a white slave owner, no less. Lots of slave owners...like my own ancestors...were kind to their slaves. That doesn't mean that the black slaves LOVED being slaves, but it was a hell of a lot better than what alot of black slaves experienced AFTER they were freed by Lincoln...who didn't give a f about slaves. He cared about SOUTHERN LAND AND MONEY and was willing to burn the South to get it. Once the slaves were freed...enormous suffering was unleashed for them.
First let me say, I've owned horses. I love horses. However, I haven't ever owned a horse like Jim Key, I doubt very few folks have. This video is such a great story, because it is true and because the storyline entertained and, AND educated me. I will watch again whenever I need to remind myself how special life is, how life will offer us countless reasons to celebrate life and living it. There has to be many many many other stories from our human history that no one has heard of. Or that has long ago faded into the caverns of lost history. You can't view this video and not get something from it. It's such a 'giving' video that will add something to your life. It may just plant a 'seed' within you to do your own searches from history, perhaps your own history. As you find something that moves you deeply, it needs to be shared in our 'troubled' now. I sincerely hope this will be made into a movie as is mentioned in the video. Though I don't know how they'd ever pull it off, as it will inspire folks to be better attuned to earth's animals. Thank you for making and sharing this 'magically inspiring' video, probably one of if not the best one I've had the privilege of viewing. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. And Morgan Freeman is the PERFECT pick for the lead in a movie version. Can't wait. American morale needs a lift like this movie would assuredly provide. LIke Nike tells us, 'just do it', to those in movie making power positions, and the sooner the better. Pardon the ramblings of an old lady. . . but this video just worked to further enthuse me about why I'm on planet earth and what I"m to do with the rest of my life upon our blue marble. YEAH
When I was growing up my grandpa had a horse named Roscoe that would let himself out of the barn and into pasture every morning.. He had to unlock and open the door to his stall, and then slide the barn door open.. When my grandpa figured out what was going on.. He cut a piece of pipe and put it between the sliding door and the wall, so the door couldn't slide open.. It took a couple weeks but Roscoe figured out he had to move the pipe to open the door..
Mark Lada we had a cow who would lift the chain up over the gate post with her nose and let the herd out of the yard. The only other cow that learned to do this was her daughter.
The farm I live on has a bunch of horses. I can't remember who it started with.... Possibly the stud Mr. But who ever started it taught it to several others. The stud found out if he bumped the bottom of the stall enough the latch would come up. Then he just slides the door open with his mouth. I have seen quite a few of them do it.... Only ever saw a gelding named rocky actually trying to work out how the doors on the other end of the barn work. I have so many videos of that horse going around the stall door trying to work out how that kind is opened. If you just bang the latch and make the noise he immediately grabs the door with his mouth and pushes to open it.
I just came across your story and report on “Jim Key”.... Ironically I’m presently working on a construction project to build NetFlix a new production studio. I’m also intrigued with the history of Hollywood.... Your efforts to collect and share an awareness towards not only the just due to Black Americans but the responsibility to behave with kindness and Love and the eternal rewards for that patience to pursue.... I really appreciate this Story and Appreciate You desire to make a difference.... Thank You Curtis
Curtis: It is Netflix that I feel should pay attention to this story. It would be perfect for them I believe. I have no contacts there and I'm not looking to direct or produce a story myself. The author of the book and I would be great support folks as we did the research and her book is a success. In addition, she writes screenplays in Hollywood. Traditional Hollywood hasn't taken any interest in the book or the story although we have tried-no real contacts though. David Hoffman-filmmaker
My horse Silverado was very intelligent. I told him one day, "go and find my brother, ". He put his nose on the ground and sniffed around a bit. The then walked over to the shed and stopped. I jumped off and looked in the shed. My brother was there!
WOW !!! I'm simply blown away & Deeply touched by this story !!! I love animals ,, nature & especially horses.. I've always known & felt like they are more intelligent than we ever notice. Beautiful Jim Beautiful True Story.
Gayla Smith Wow. I love horses and can hardly wait to go riding again.
So very nice to be loved and have a devotee (loving comment). Animals are amazing, nothing surprises me. You are truly blessed to be loved by this horse. Cherish every moment, life is too short. Best regards to all out there. 🎈

This country will never teach truth when it involves the lives of slaves or black people in general.
Thank you.

Love your story as well Randall...appreciate you sharing! Cheers

I find this story at 71 years old to be the best thing I have ever found or read on the internet. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Also in the book Empire of the Summer Moon, it has been described how Kwanah Parker, the las Comanche chief trained his horse to help him to pick wounded worriors and bring them to safety.
Nancy, you can do it.
Good luck,
I concur. I've reared many horses in last fifty years. Some haven't the ability to learn more than rudimentary things. Others are rather entellegent

After that incident, every time a chicken was close to him he would stop moving until he knew the chicken had cleared his hooves.)
Brandy lived to be 28 years old.

Thank you. There is much for you and your mom to see. Several years worth.!
David Hoffman filmmaker
I though the most amazing horse was Beaucephalis ! He belonged to Alexander the Great.
What’s more amazing is Bill Key who trained the horse- he was a slave turned businessman. And apparently the best horse trainer that ever lived.
I think whatever organizations plan what people are featured for black history month dropped the ball by not finding this, correct me if they did, but a moment with google didn't show anything.
Oh yeah this is going to happen now.
any man..has the ability for great things, Bill, Jim Key's Caretaker was given respect and an opportunity, in a time when white men didn't do that kind of thing on a regular basis, many minds were repressed because of racism, and the lack of opportunities given them
Bill key was John keys son
That isn't more amazing.
There were a number of slaves that became successful after being freed. How many horses had such a career?
One is unique, the other is not.
I've heard this story. I have family who moved into the Shelbyville TN area 20 years ago or so, and started hearing versions of this story. It's a helluva story and would be a wonderful and motivational film. I hope you can get this done.
One of the greatest stories ever told . This is simply amazing. I’ve heard of Jim Key. Heartwarming and very moving.❤️
What a wonderful story. Hats off to Bill Key and of course Jim. So much love and admiration between horse and man. Beautiful
I read about this horse and he and his owner’s story back in 2000. I named my weanling colt Jim Key. I love this story.
Anybody whose had a horse with more ideas than a human can figure out is magic.
After surviving the year 2020, I needed a pick me up like the Jim Key story. I loved every second of it. I will pray that one day I will get to see this exciting story on film!!!
I loved every second of it!!!
But your Jim Key isn't a genius? Right?😆
If you tell your horse Rollover Is he going to roll over The smartest horse alive
@@alan4sure My Jim Key became a sheriff's posse horse after I sold him. An important job not all horses have the heart for, but certainly not a "genius horse".
He would be 20 yrs old now.
This is beautiful. Horses are such wonderful animals , makes me sad to see anyone mistreat them. I have two myself and I swear they keep me sane
I enjoyed your story immensely you're a wonderful speaker and incredible story teller....
That was my thoughts as well. This guy could read your gas bill and make it mesmerizing. Haha. This is a great story and worthy to be heralded!
@@rapturebound197 really a part of American history... Mark twain type stuff!
But absolutely true ,nonfiction...
I like how the camera cuts to his face, it makes me feel like my grandpa is telling me a story
@@johnwells9089 You from Saginaw John??
@@danceswith7wolves Yes Nicholas I agree. Aside from his very unique ability to tell a story the production quality, camera angle, set up, framing, speed, length, content, etc of his youtube video was spot on. He did such a superb job resurrecting the story and tieing it in with part of his own when he found that old phamlet in the bookstore he strangely but delightfully becomes part of the Jim Key story.
My grandpa was born in 1897 and I wondered if he knew of the this horse and great man Doc William Key.
Take care Nicholas and God bless son.

5:11 "with kindness, and patience and intelligence - as he was raised"
He was a slave. He lacked autonomy. My great-grandmother was treated the same. On her death bed she asked to be freed.
I have seen horses interacting with disabled kids in new zealand and the love happiness and joy one would see in these kids was so amazing tyvm for sharing.
What a wonderful story. I can’t wait for the film. Our nation needs heartwarming stories such as this now to remind us of our greatness and our kindness. I predict it will be a great hit. Thank you for saving this story!
This story is a real good teaching tool about kindness to animals.
I read the book and it was excellent!! Even stopped in TN en route to vacation spot that year. Hope the movie gets made -- I'd go!!!
@Prime Minister Justin Trudeau This is a fact, thank you for pointing that out.
@@bethhopsecger7110 The scenery is beautiful, and the people are friendly.
dorothy mason AMEN especially these days
The DVD should honor them by including a pledge to be kind to animals that kids could send to the Humane Society. I bet there would be more than 2 million.
Morgan Freeman would be ideal for this part. Morgan is a brilliant actor and I’m certain will make the movie a hit.

You can't have a black person play the part of a slave, that's racism, it should be a white lesbian with an asian accent painted red
@@johnbuck5181 your a horses ass john...and about as smart as one. ..

I so AGREE. I have been riding since I was three. They are intelligent, gentle, and most certainly loyal.

Loved this story. I sure hope they make a movie. I had a horse when I was a teenager. Raised him from a colt. I can attest to their intelligence. Love, patience and kindness goes a long way. The things I taught him in his short time was near and dear to my heart. I will never forget the unique bond we had.
This is the kind of story I love. Thoroughly entertaining, surprises galore, and it's absolutely true. I was totally captivated by this film. Serendipity certainly paid off for you this time. Many thanks for creating and sharing it.
_put an end to animal cruelty_ includes being vegetarian right?
@@conesillyvalley7182 hell ya!
@@paulazemeckis7835 You`re absolutely right. They are the most beautiful, loving animal on the planet!

Hello Lizanne, How are you doing?
Incredible and they are so loyal. Very smart .
The message here: Treat ALL animals with KINDNESS... And the world opens up....
I do I add seasoning and spices
@KonI AmiN Because most humans are arseholes!!! Animals are amazing & intelligent, so much more than greedy humans!!

I love horses and their intelligence is incredible. They tell you how you are feeling.
YOU ARE A WONDERFUL STORY TELLER AND THIS STORY CAPTURED MY HEART❤️
Hello Sandy, How are you doing?
I own a horse just like him. Others would call him a "pasture ornament." I know what he is. He is a person.
Hello Jennifer how are you doing and hope you're staying safe over there?
" I know what he is. He is a person". This is the best part of the sentence! I agree.

That's cute and believable.....like he's saying hi to you.....LOL
Lucky to have had a soulmate in fur
I first fell in love with horses as a child when I read a book by Walter Farley. From then on, I read every book I could get my hands on about horses, and watched every movie. And this is the first time I ever heard of Jim Key. Thank you for this story. I loved it! God Bless you!!
I read it too. Then, some 45 or so years later, I got this little beautiful black stallion. Named him Blackie Elam, after my dad.
I grew up with horses and other animals. They were all intelligent when you respect them (kindness), and they trust you. Make the movie!!! Lots of stories in this world. I too have one. As our country heals, what a perfect story to unite with everything that surrounds us that we give energy to. Our children, our pets, our loved ones and each other. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Mr. Hoffman, this was such a delightful story. There was nothing bad that happened to him, and the people were good to him, and that was so nice. Thank you so much!
The man was a slave. So you might want to consider rephrasing that. I wouldn’t exactly say “nothing bad happened to him”...jeezus
I'm almost certain they're speaking about the horse......
Maybe your saying the horse is a slave?
Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened.

The story is a more about the horse but I'm EQUALLY IMPRESSED BY THE TRAINER IF NOT MORE.Both are UNBELIEVABLE.

They should make it a two part movie. First about his life, then about when the horse comes in
I actually have never found it hard to believe that animals are intelligent but more than that some are wise, knowing, understanding and capable of unconditional love. Moreover, animals are healing and they come into our lives to help us awaken a part of our soul that we didn’t even know existed. They also give us strength and the will to keep trying 💕 Animals are amazing 🤩
Hello Brenda, How are you doing?
There are so many lessons to unpack from this story. I too look forward to the movie or movies.
Not
@@conniewolf7300 Wrong. This is a story about trust. Because of the way Bill Key treated the horse, the horse TRUSTED him. If Bill hadn't treated the horse with love and understanding, the horse's intelligence never would have come to the fore.

You are so right there needs to be a movie about this. We need more movies about what kindness and patience and love can do
I absolutely love this story. It needs to be shared. Doing the right thing..kindness, patience, tolerance, commitment, love.
This is a remarkably inspiring story told by a brilliant storyteller. It's so beautiful, in every way and demonstrates the beauty and reality of genuine love and kindness and where this can take you. However for me it's tinged with sadness when I consider this old lost world that no longer exists anymore. The world seemed much better back then before the 2 world wars and all the multitudinous evils of society we have now. It causes me to lament and cry what have we become?
What an uplifting tale from the past. We need more of these.

Jim's kindness stemmed from the kindness shown to him
Yeah...by a white slave owner, no less.
Then your dad was like f that off to the glue factory he went
Mark Lada we had a cow who would lift the chain up over the gate post with her nose and let the herd out of the yard. The only other cow that learned to do this was her daughter.
This is such a lovely story. Its made my heart smile.
Its so amazing. They are such clever animals. Bless them.
