As it happens, my first Tartan Video experience was also Battle Royale, but it was on DVD instead. Great film!
One interesting thing I spotted watching this (and I took out my copy to check whilst I was doing this) is that whilst the 2006 Black Christmas DVD (The one you showed, it's the pretty much the same disc as the original 2003 release, it just has new cover art, I'm guessing to coincide with the Remake that was out at the time) runs under the Tartan Grindhouse label, the original DVD release from 2003 (which I own, much prefer the cover art on that one being honest) ran under the Tartan Terror label instead. A very minor change that doesn't affect the film at all, but just thought it was odd.
Anyway, great video as always, and a great tribute to a great company! You really do deserve more of an audience, your videos are really high quality whilst not being overly long or too thin, you always strike a perfect balance that leaves me wanting more content!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! I have spotted the Tartan Terror version of Black Christmas out and about, and I agree, the cover art is much better. I've gotten rid of my Tartan version now and upgraded to the 101 Films Blu Ray.

Tartan did a so much good work during their time. I remember renting a few of their releases from the local Blockbusters. I still have their DVD release of The Eye.

It's a company I'll always have love for and will still continue to buy if there isn't a better version available. They definitely helped shape my film tastes. It's great seeing others have an appreciation for them as much as I do too! Thanks for watching

One of my favourite labels growing up and yes, funnily enough my first tartan experience was also battle royale on vhs.
Seems a familiar occurrence in the comments here lol. Not only does the re-animator tartan look bad transfer pq wise but it’s also heavily cut by the bbfc. Remember back in the day searching hmv’s all over my area for takashi miike titles. Good times, simpler times. The amount of titles that tartan actually put out including the box sets etc though was actually very impressive for the time. Still collect them to this day and still love them. Strangely enough some titles tartan put out STILL don’t have Blu-ray releases. Lovely collection you have also, sir. Great video.

Yeah my collection was only a very minor section of their back catalogue, they really put out some great stuff, I always had my eye on the Ozu sets and the Jess Franco double bills, but never managed to find them at a reasonable price.
I feel like Battle Royale really was the start for a lot of people from a certain era, and it's a fantastic film for both fans of extreme out of the box films and foreign films in general.
      Thanks for watching!

Would you ever consider doing an overview video of your DVD/Blu-Ray collection. I'm kind of in awe of how much you have on your shelves

Used to ask every store back in the mid to late 2000s if they had Gummo on dvd . Kinda crazy it never got a release.
But yea back then I used to basically buy anything once it has tartan on it

WE DON'T ALLOW SECRETARY (2002) DISSING IN OUR HOUSE!!!
Seriously though, great video! Been collecting a few recently, but similarly avoiding some of their releases that have had better re-releases or are just bad releases (Thank you DVDCompare and DVDBeaver for warning me of cut versions and NTSC-PAL masters). Hope to find some more gems lost to time through their catalog, at least before they all become OOP (101 films store seems to stock some releases too). I heard rumblings about The Ordeal getting a blu-ray release in France, and Janus Films hinted Man Bites Dog a year or two back. Visitor Q may be left on DVD or atleast the Blu-Ray will have to be upscaled due to it's video origins, IDK if it's 50hz or 60hz video though?
Lastly, thanks for warning about Man Bites Dog's crappy transfer. Hoped the re-release would use Criterions DVD transfer or a similarly improved one (like Audition's CE re-release) but alas. I guess il have to watch it via... other means... as I wait.

It's good to hear some people are still collecting Tartan! I wish I'd used those websites to be honest, a lot of mine where blind buys, followed by disappointment haha. It's weird that 101 films stock Tartan, but you still see the odd one floating around HMV as well, I'm guessing they did one last run of some popular releases before going bust or something, and those are just the excess stock that's left.

Man bites dog has already been released by criterion. Dvd only, I believe but yes, they have put it out previously.

The first Asian film i ever see was Itchi the Killer. I was never the same afterwards 😂. From there on i was all in Asia movies.
Highly recomend The Man from Nowhere (Korean movie).
Infernal Affairs - on Criterion is brilliant.

What a way to start haha! Love Ichi the Killer though, saw it very young haha.
Will definitely check out The Man from Nowhere, and I've been eyeing up that Infernal Affairs Criterion set, but that price tag!!!

Battle Royale was also my 1st Tatan/Subtitled Film. I did like The Trailer Reels, just wish that 88 Films/Arrow would do that kind of thing on their newer releases. Tesis needs a UK upgrade, Night Of The Living Dead (Remake) is not a bad effort.

I agree, a trailer dvd/blu ray from a current boutique label would be a fantastic addition to any collection! Also there definitely need to be more love for Tesis, love that film! Thanks for watching!

    I liked the sleeping bride.
I currently have 54 tartan releases. I bought most of them 15 years ago. most of the ones I have will probably never get a blu ray release.

As a film on it's own its not the worst, but in the context of being in a horror collection with the same font as Ringu, its a bit disappointing haha. Thanks for watching.

I didnt own many tartan, i had the Ringu trilogy, Hard Boiled & The Eye (I think A tale of Two Sisters as well). Stuff like Ju-On & Battle Royale i imported.

I have a few Tartan dvds, i dont follow companies. I have Battle Royale, Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs and Gruesome Twosome (yes, I like HGL). I have to disagree on one point, a stick figure flipbook of Reanimator would be worth a fiver. I adore this movie. You are right about Emin though, but i can say the same for all this art crap that sells for huge amounts of money for what looks like about 15 seconds effort. I have an unmade bed every morning. so what??

    • @oldmanchimesreviews
      @oldmanchimesreviews  8 месяцев назад

I think I had all those at one point as well! Oh I love Reanimator, it's just a shame the print isn't great, especially because at the time there weren't many other options DVD wise. Yeah Emin ain't worth a glance haha!
