I think it's because the sword handle is painted therefore making it thicker and thus not fitting properly. This is an issue with regular Transformers as well, such as Shattered Glass Ultra Magnus, where his missiles are painted so it doesn't fit. I had to sand off some of the paint in order to make them fit.
For a fraction of the cost you could have just gone to nonnef. You get a sword, you get the knee fixers, you get a new attachment for his gun, you get a secondary gun, but most importantly of all you get brand new feet/toes that fix the very problem you described!
The goofy Eyes are the best piece. Every time I watch the movie my brothers always notice the goofy eyes, and I do as well. Edit : Nevermind, they scratch paint.
Review vids on upgrade kits are always fun to watch as these third party offerings give you much-needed accessories for your transformers collection. The main dinobot I'm looking forward to is swoop because what engineering tricks do hasbro have up their sleeve with his transformation.
I used a nail file on the handle to remove the paint, now it fits perfectly. They made the handle a standard 5mm and then painted it, so it became thicker
Would be interesting if Hasbro or Takara released their own upgrade kits for their own products. I feel its an untapped market. The stock version of the figure would be cheaper but its target audience is younger. While the upgrade kits cost extra but that's for the collectors.
Ah, the best think going for this set are the flame effects. The Sludge hip and knee fixes you can do pretty well on your own. You can even use a hot water fix by stretching the plastic ratchet pieces. (I cover that on my channel) And for $20 bucks there’s a Nonnef set that covers more and gives you a better sword that fits. The rest is floor polish or Kiki’s for the joints. I may get that Grimlock set but for the money this one falls real short. 🤗
Omg, you’re right, those toes flipping up into that big empty space fixes the garish toes ruining his undercarriage and getting rid of the dreaded hollow spaces which are a crime on leader class figures!
If DNA Design just sold bags of those shims for the ratchet joints in various sizes on their own I'd buy them, the ones that came with the Scorponok and Black Zarak kits were great and because I didn't need them for those figures, I used some of them to fix the ankles on my Titan Legacy Metroplex, but they're too big for Sludge
Emgo did a review of an upgrade kit that did let the toes fold into the body. I can't remember what it was, but I'm sure you could find the video easily enough.
Im still debating on if i should get it or not i love the blast effects but for 25 dollars? I found 3d printed swords on ebay i already bought them for grimlock and slug ill probably go ahead and just get the sword for sludge from ebay too way cheaper only $5
BDT Studio BDT-35C Upgrade Kit has the folding toes. Definitely going to get that set IF I decide to keep Sludge. I have a mind to try to track down a GigaPower HQ-04R Graviter as a replacement. A brontosaurus robot alt mode should be quite bigger than a tyrannosaurus alt mode.

Yep I got the flipped up toes upgrade for my Sludge. It looks so much better. The dark gold color also looks better than the cheap looking original gold color.

I hate ratchet joints I just got the combiner wars Optimus and it’s a great figure and looks super cool but my only problem is the ratchets being stupidly tight

Oh this kit is an easy pass. I was able to fix the hip and knees with thin strips of rubberband wedged in the gap of those teeth in the joints. None of these pieces actually upgrade the figure. DNA Designs is getting lazy lately. Only Grimlocks upgrade is pretty good.
The only thing I find cool in this upgrade kit are those blast effects but it makes no sense paying $30 for 3 of those... Those dangling robot toes were probably the worst crime Hasbro ever made on their figures and it's mindboggling to me DNA couldn't figure out they should cash in on it by making foldable robot toes (some really good upgrade kits are already available at ebay). To match that ridiculousness, nobody at DNA was able to figure out they could actually make a bigger cover and then add the tab on it, if they really thought they should preserve the worst weapon storage slot ever! I'm 100% sure Hasbro made that gun storage point just to mask the dangling robot toes in promo pictures. When you take everything into account, this shouldn't be called upgrade kit as it doesn't really upgrade anything, other than ratchets which can be fixed with stuff everybody have at home... I did it on my copy. On top of all of the issues, not only they couldn't match even the paint on that "googly eyes" piece, tolerance on it is so bad it will actually scratch the paint?! Give me a f$%&ing break!
Yes you're being very harsh on this kit. The reason they didn't add feet upgrade is because other 3rd party companies beat them too it. So it would be a waste of plastic to add the feet upgrade with the very likely hood people bought the other feet upgrade. The under belly filler fits very and doesn't get the way of the feet upgrades. A MUST buy.

Kind of an L on DNA’s part, I mean you have a 3d printed kit that has foldable toes but not the prestigious DNA design. Kind of a fall off from the quality of their early kits
So after watching this whole video, I’m definitely NOT convinced this is an “upgrade” kit. Many, many different better kits on eBay. Only thing cool are the blast effects, why waste MORE money on these plastic pieces of crap? It is what it is. 🤷🏽♂️

Sand the sword handle, it's the paint making it so hard to peg in...and for the ratchets, some craft foam could be used to adjust those as needed...

I'm 50/50 on this set. The new joints and blast effects parts are great but everything else is mostly miss.

Did they have swords at any point in the cartoon? As far as I can tell the toys had swords but they never had them in the cartoon except maybe Snarl.

DNA's kits for Scorpinok were outstanding which I bought. These hardly do anything to make the bots better.
Without improved feet, this kit was a non starter for me. I ended up buying some 3D printed feet that fold up.

They aren't mechtech ports. That was what only used for tf dotm and prime. For everything since siege they are C.O.M.B.A.T ports or 5mm ports.
