Thank you sir for your videos you have taught me allot, especially in roping, I’m a south Texas cowboy and your style is different. However I have picked up allot on ur methods and it’s funny watching the other guys watch me, talking amongst there selfs, then watching them starting to pick it up when they think no one is watching. Thank you keep videos up if ya can.

The authentic Mexican Saddle head (horn) right there.
In Jalisco (state) which the capital city’s name is Guadalajara, the saddle head is made of wood and when you dally for a pial or peal when the reata slides, the friction between the wood and the reata produce smoke that is known as perfume or cologne among charros. The reason because it is called a cologne or perfume is because it actually smells very good and because is not easy to get and it can cost a finger or two if you do it wrong.

The larger diameter horn means more rope in contact with the horn per wrap.
this means more friction and thus more control with one wrap so it doesn't bind up and not slide.

Haha. Hitch hiking was never a major mode of transportation for me, anyway. But I still have two thumbs just in case! Apparently both my Homestead tree saddles have Guadalajara horns. But I either forgot or never knew they were called that.

That is crazy abuelo I hadn't thought of that the mexican version of the post horn is called "cabeza de cachucha" that horn is most popular in the region of Mexico I'm from and but the Guadalajara horn is from jalisco which is as you day and j Remer asking my grandpa why he uses a Guadalajara and not the one where we are from and he explained what you just did

My dad used a brass horn. He said it depended what type of country he was in whether he tied hard and fast or dallied.

Comparing the post horns of the 80's to a good semi Guadalajara is a no brainier. A lot of those horns were very tall and often smaller diameter. You had to really drive those turns to the bottom, depending on how well the horn was wrapped they didn't stack well, and you could really smack your wrist. Rope a lot of big cattle on sketchy horses in fast situations and THINK about it. When it comes to cap size and height in general, consider this. Do you take the seat off your bicycle and sit on the post to ride it? Would you rather be punched in the chest by a fist or stabbed with an ice pick?

A former boss of mine was missing all his fingertips on his right hand, from dallying. Maybe a post horn was the culprit

Hahah, hitchhiker or not, it’s better to keep all the fingers Mother Nature gave you! But Guadalajara is also quite difficult to prononce well. So the horn preference is a matter of thumb or tongue in fact 🤔

I've made a lot of dallies on a post horn .. even sliding rope .. and I can still count to 5 on one hand lol

I would almost bet your wrist still hurts from that time you had to dally real fast 2 weeks ago, though. Wore out a few ropes on both, a horn cap set at a slight angle sure does save your hand.
