  • What happens when the logs need another 6 months to season but I need to get my log cabin built? Build it in my backyard with cedar fence posts!
In this video, I explain what I'm doing with fence posts, what the next steps are and when I hope to get this cabin built before I build another one with the trees I cut down earlier.z

I'm 63 wishin I would have been more like you Shawn...I'm pretty sure you're doing it right. I am building on to my cabin in the woods now for my retirement in August. Plan on spending my retirement years modeling your lifestyle. God Bless you my friend. I'm glad I found you & you've been a great influence in my life.

Don't put things off til later. I always planned to travel, and experience many new places around the world once I retired. Last year I retired early, age 59. Had a big trip planned.... Two months later, just before I was planning to leave I learned my cancer had come back. Did 8 months of chemo. Am ok, but chemo starts again soon.
Don't put off your dreams for later. You may not be able to do them.
    Drone footage was excellent.
Thanks Shawn for the great video. Ignore the critics, grasp life, and Do what your heart calls for.
(prolly shouldn't post this.. but if it helps someone..)

Scott Chesnutt I don't know where you live brother but really research. You can help yourself get better. (get your body as alkaline as possible, no sugar, use either IMMPOWER or Turkey tail mushrooms and if you live in a place where medical marihuana is legal try Rick Simpson Oil) ALL of these things are very helpful add supportive even if you go the traditional treatment route.
I'm a semi retired hospice nurse who has gone thru this myself.
Will pray for your quick healing!

Scott Chesnutt brother! You need not do Chemo nor have cancer again. I am an RN and I tell you it's a racket to make money. Do MMS instead. Even now while you are better. You can make it yourself for $100 a year! Please watch a video here on RUclips called "Bigger than flat earth" its about 45 mins long. My friends do it. Please watch that video. It's not about flat earth it's about MMS

I love the full spectrum living aspect. Hunting, fishing, and gardening. Keeping a few chickens and goats. Putting up your own food. That is self-reliance... real life as it was meant to be. Really enjoying your videos. We're just now empty nesters for the second time, getting ready to leave urban life and return to an unfinished homestead.

I've built a few log houses and one thing I learned was to fall the trees in the fall if possible and leave them lay with the branches on. This helps to leach out the moisture a lot faster and in my experience keeps warpage to a minimum.

Green wood is easier to cut and split. Frozen logs split easier than doing it in warm weather. A log will also split easier if you start at the butt end of the log. Remember, split in the direction the tree grew. You can split planks from a log provided there are fewer knots. Just some friendly advice to make things a little easier.

I like how the things you build are so aesthetic and non-intrusive on nature. They stand out but in more in a more pleasant and Faustian way that isn't garish but really quite beautiful.

That last cry of the loon never fails to raise the hair on my arms! I have been in the wilderness in your country back in the 70's and early 80's and have seen the loons "congregate" on McIntire Lake in the Quetico where literally hundreds of Northern Common Loons would fly into the lake and spend an hour or more just calling back and forth to each other!
I tried to find out more about this phenomenon and nobody quite knows how or why they all do this but they come in from all the lakes within a mile radius or more around the "meeting" lake and they just raise such a fuss with each other calling and hooting until after sundown. Then, without any fanfare or warning calls that I could distinguish, they would all get up on the water and do their "water dash" to get themselves airborne and off they went back to wherever it was from which they came.
What a wonderful experience, to be allowed to watch such beauty in nature and know that you are among the few in the world who can bear witness to such things. My love of the outdoors is the type of "curse" that most men spend their entire life looking for and, those of us who have been raised with a deep respect for nature and the outdoors, have already found and secretly cherish in our hearts forever. And the best part???....... Nature and enjoying its bounty and its beauty is still free for anyone who wants to enjoy it.

Good on ya for getting after this project and not worrying about "burning out". With your approach, I am sure that you will be satisfied with a "live well lived".
I can appreciate that some people would prefer to be dedicated to a purist approach with not using any power tools, but in the end you are building a cabin with your own hands. It will be something that you can be proud of.
    Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the update Shawn. I enjoy watching all of your videos, whether building the cabins, canoeing, fishing or just getting outdoors. I envy you a little, with the time and available locations you have to do what you do. I am also 47 and have dreams of doing more outdoor activities. We just graduated our last child from high school and have plans to move to an area that is more rural within the next two years. I don't want to look back with regret, and wish I would have done things, that I never did. Up until now, raising our 3 children has been our priority. Keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about those who criticize what you are doing. - Jeremy

I like the idea of doing things in the old style. Anyone else who likes it too gets my admiration. However, one must realize that some of those methods can be time consuming and difficult. In that spirit I suggest the cabin corners be dome with staggered logs rather than notched logs. Yes, it's a little less authentic and it does necessitate the use of spikes or lag bolts, but is soooo much much easier.

My husband Jim, and I love your videos and what you are doing with the log cabins, etc in the woods. We live in SE Kentucky, USA, It is beautiful mountainous country in a part of the coal field. It can be viewed by going to Harlan County, Ky.com. We actually live a stones throw away from Camp Blanton (later named Blanton Forest because of rare "Old growth trees". They say they millions of years old, but I have a different idea on the years). Although I was born in Atlanta, Georgia USA we move to Ky when I was a small child. I have always loved the idea of living in a "true" long cabin....and possibly off grid (for a while), don't know if I could adjust at my age (70's). We love the way you are building the "old fashioned" way, without power tools, etc. I am on RUclips through my computer at the moment. But we watch your videos via FireStick TV, and therefore we can't "like" or "comment". I think a lot of your watchers may be doing the same thing. We love all the tips and suggestions you have about building, and your views on different "life matters". Thank you so much for interesting programs.

I am 49 and wrapped up in the middle of purchasing a house which my wife does not want to leave. I cannot see leaving her to do the things you are doing and she does not want to do them. It is where I landed in life and I hope things change. However watching your videos makes my day. I grew up in the woods of Washington State and now live in Illinois. I did not do the things you are doing and I wish I had. Do as much as you can and keep yourself healthy. Be careful with the heavy logs my friend. I have lifted a lot of heavy items in my life and now at 49 there is no way I could continue to do the things I see you doing.
Live and love the life the creator has given you and follow your own desires. I will be watching you and Joe as long as I can.

Wise decision. We used to live in a cabin built in 1850 with American Chestnut logs. They used what they had and ended up with big gaps. You could see where places near the joints where the logs shrank. It was managed well over the years but probably a source of aggravation. BTW: Go ahead and do this while you can.

People who critisize probaby never done anything like this in the first place. So it's easy to sit back and pick apart something. Im sure anyone could pick apart something they do in their everyday life as well. Untill you build one, You don't know. I think it is good you are doing it. Thanks for the video

Captain Everything Thanks Captain. It's too easy to be an armchair critic, and I can see myself how easy it is to identify the flaws in my process and filming once I view it on the big screen. I'm far from an expert so I don't mind people pointing out errors and providing helpful suggestions. Thanks for your support

Sean, it's the internet.... you can't please everyone and you most definitely don't have to explain yourself to anyone. Keep doing what you're doing as long as it makes YOU happy. I appreciate every video you post for different reasons. 😃

Keep doing whatever you want and do it how you want. It's your life and you can live it how you please, you choose to share it on RUclips for which many of us are grateful. It's not up to another being to criticise or dictate how you do things. You are very fortunate to be able to do what you do.
Me? I'm a little jealous for sure but I'm sure not gonna hate on you for it! I'm gonna sit back enjoy my subscription and like each of your videos and live the self reliance life through this channel.
Keep up the good work it's very much appreciated by many.

You are a total inspiration to me. I think I was a pioneer farmer in a past life lol. I’d love to build a log cabin, cultivate more of our property, etc. Trouble is, I am only one person and need some braun to help me. Lol. I’ll bust it 10 to 12 hours on the weekend tho. Just watch me. I love your videos so for now I’ll live through you.

    Yes, please continue!
For me, who can hardly hold a hammer, it is impressive to see you build these houses, their furniture and decorations and everything else you need, all by yourself and without power tools.
Your way of life is very wise and inspiring!
The atmosphere of your videos is very soothing, despite the sounds of the construction work. The music is beautiful and soothing too.
The landscapes are sublime, the animals too. I loved, in particular, this moment of a video that you captured where a salmon throws itself into the mouth of a bear.
You say in this video that we can ask you questions, here is mine, since the first video, I am curious.
It seems to me that you write in a notebook every day. Do you keep a journal, or do you write down your future projects, your list of things to do the next day or is it something else?
Thank you very much for all your videos.
    Take good care of yourself
