    Sometimes fan theories are pretty cool. But Hagrid actually stated that no one else applied for the DADA post, so Lockhart was the only option. Due to a lack of proper teaching options I can only guess that's when Dumbledore chose to hire him and expose him as a fraud. Plus Dumbledore knew the DADA position had been cursed by that point. So I'm sure he knew that whatever hijinks Gilderoy would get into was only temporary until he could fill the position by a proper witch or wizard.

    Didn't Hagrid say in the book the only reason Dumbledore hired Lockhart was because literally no one else would apply for the job? I don't know about any one else, but I have been in numerous situations where my company only hired some one was because they really needed somebody to do the job and no one else applied.
    I figured Dumbledore (as well as the entire Hogwarts staff and faculty) knew Lockhart was an idiot (Hell, some of them probably taught Lockhart while he was at Hogwarts and remember that outside of charms he was not that talented). But, if his only options were to A) have no one teach DADA indefinitely (which was not a real option) or B) have Lockhart do it and do it poorly until they could find a more qualified teacher, then the later option was the better. Something tells me that if he could Dumbeldore would have picked someone else in a heart beat.

    • @harryeast95
      @harryeast95 6 лет назад +47

      We know that Moody only took the job as a favour to Dumbledore, Slughorn was actively recruited and, frankly, I doubt Firenze ever offered himself up as willing to take the Divination job. Putting these together leaves me with the impression that Dumbledore went out and found Lupin too. So, in this sense, it's a question of why didn't Dumbeldore track down someone else he knew who might take the job to be an alternative candidate... to which these explanations make sense. (Also, there is, ahem, always Snape.)
      Regardless I recently re-read Chamber of Secrets and while I don't remember if it was Hagrid who said this you're definitely right that someone said no-one else applied. Which the video really should have mentioned.

    • @M00nSlippers
      @M00nSlippers 6 лет назад +29

      This. Also...are people forgetting that all the students and the teachers too thought the position was cursed long before Harry's time at Hogwarts? EVERY POSSIBLE TEACHER in the country went to Hogwarts themselves and knew this. Only desperate people or those doing favors are going to dismiss that. I mean who wants something messed up to happen to them at worst, or be job hunting again after a year at best?

    • @Tsunaze59
      @Tsunaze59 6 лет назад +17

      Yeah, that's the reason. The fact that it was known that being a professor of DADA in Hogwarts was more of a curse than a privilege forced Dumbledore to choose someone that could get the job just for the fame of teaching Harry Potter, because if he didn't found anyone, as it is said in the 5th book, the ministry could choose a professor to replace the previous one, something that Dumbledore wouldn't accept. So yeah, Dumbledore didn't choose Lockhart to teach a lesson to Harry, as well as he didn't hired Slughorn to teach a lesson to Harry but to learn something from Slughorn that Dumbledore himself couldn't get to know even with some veritaserum

    • @corapearlstein6341
      @corapearlstein6341 6 лет назад +6

      Also, in the 6th book we learn that Dumbledore knew that the job was in fact jinxed, and teachers could only stay on for a year. Dumbledore must have known that Lockhart would only be able to be there for a year, and then he'd get s new chance to find someone much better.

    Hagrid said it when talking to Ron, Hermione and the dark haired kid. When Ron complained Hagrid said Lockhart was the only person to apply for the job. Dumbledore didn't want Snape to take the job because he suspected it was cursed. I'm sure he warned Lupin and Imposter/Mad Eye Moody before they took they job too. I'm sure Dumbledore didn't mind letting Umbridge find out for herself. There is a glaring inconsistency of a score of teachers had to have been harmed after Voldemort cursed it when Dumbledore blocked his attempt to be a teacher, which had to have been 10 years or more prior to Harry coming to Hogwarts. Yet no mention is made about that in all the books. Nor does Snape ask Voldemort to remove a curse he had to know was there.
    Just thought I'd throw that out there.

      Either he kills Dumbledore, which obviously means he won't be the DATDA teacher anymore ;
      Draco / someone else / the ring's curse kills Dumbledore... in which case the only person who would trust Snape to teach the subject would be gone, and he either leaves the school or goes back to Potions.

    She was hired by the Ministry of Magic since Dumbledore was unable to find someone to fill the position as DADA teacher

  • @BunBun299
    @BunBun299 6 лет назад +123

    I think you missed a couple obvious points. One, Dumbledore hired him because he could not get anyone else. This problem with DATDA teachers not lasting very long was a problem that persisted since long before Harry was alive. So he was rather desperate to put anyone in that position, and couldn't put Snape in it because he'd lose his single most important asset. And two, knowing this problem as Dumbledore knows, and knowing that Lockhart was a fraud, Dumbledore could very well have hired him just so he'd get his comeuppance. He's wiping people's memories and taking credit for their work? Dumbledore knows this, but can't prove it in court. So he just gives him this seemingly cushy job, with a famous pupil as bait, and let karma just happen.

He taught the students about the actual Unforgivables through demonstration on a tailless whip scorpion which gave the students a better understanding of how they worked. Now why would DUMBLEDORE hire a person who may be the most adept at MEMORY charms. DUMBLEDORE… MEMORIES… CONNECTION!!!
      I’m guessing that Dumbledore was in the process of collecting memories from other people around the time of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but he didn’t know how to extract them from other people, so he called upon the expertise of a wizard who modified the memories of two wizards whom he knows did something that this very wizard took credit for.

    • @rollingthunder1043
      @rollingthunder1043 6 лет назад +9

      You're correct. Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts, had his wand broken (though later repaired by Albus Dumbledore) and was banned from doing magic after being falsely implicated in the original opening of the Chamber of Secrets (which caused the death of "Moaning" Myrtle). His wand was later concealed in his pink umbrella, and he uses it to do some minor magic throughout the series: Never anything too impressive, he can start a fire enough to cook sausages, and can give Dudley Dursley a pig's tail but not completely transfigure him. This suggests several things: He may have had his ban on spellcasting lifted at some point, or it's just not very vigorously enforced (he casts a few minor spells and the Ministry usually doesn't seem to care). His apparent lack of spell-casting ability could be indicative of 2 things: Either his wand was never fully repaired (rendering it unable to effectively cast advanced magic) or Hagrid simply never learned any advanced magic, having been expelled part way through his third year (around age 12). Both may be possible at the same time. Altogether, this seems to paint a picture of a man you would not want teaching a class that requires advanced knowledge of spellcraft, and a functioning wand.

    I'm going to assume that Dumbledore was prevented from telling the truth because so many people had exceptional memory charms placed upon them that the truth was inaccessible. BUT, we do need to remember that Dumbledore KNEW that the job had been jinxed by Voldemort. It was jinxed in the mid-sixties, and with almost 30 years of bad luck befalling the DADA teachers, he was clearly hoping for something bad to finally befall Lockhart. Which is exactly what happened.

    Wasn't there also an aspect that hiring anyone for Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was extremely hard due to reputation of the curse casted by Voldemort on this position? Curse had taken some lives in the past, so everytime Dubledore was hiring someone, he looked for few people that would agree on that job. Most of them were either guys with incredible high ego (Lockhart, Umbridge) that made them believe they can withstand the curse, or didn't really care since they were planning to leave Hogwart after a year anyway (Quirell, Barty Crouch jr., Snape, also probably Lupin). Often that led to bad teachers (even some dark guys) taking the position, but that was better PR than oficially don't have one.
    Revealing that Lockhart is a fraud was only a side effect that Dumbledore seemed to be happy for.

      holy shit, that's dark... and damn, that's a very probably thing to happen - especially if Lockhart wasn't popular in school (he could want to relive it in a way where he has charm & power). I really hope that Dumbledore kept that in mind and watched Lockhart uncomfortably close.

    • @sam805236
      @sam805236 6 лет назад +13

      I like that theory. And also don't forget that Dumbledore always has a very hard time filling that position. So appealing to Lockhart's ego (being a professor at the prestigious Hogwarts) and keeping Lockhart in a contained environment where he'd probably eventually be found out for the fraud he is, was like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Even though he was a crappy professor for the role, remember what the alternative is, the Ministry of Magic gets to pick the role if Dumbledore cant

    • @Nadrojian1551
      @Nadrojian1551 6 лет назад +5

      Za3chik I know it sounds dark but it is probably the dark truth of the wizard of world. Hell maybe the reason Lockhart was so good at memory charms was to cover up what he did to witches who did not fall for his nonexistent charm. This isn’t mentioning what wizards like mal fit would do to mudbloods like hermione if they were any good at magic. It would be the kind of thing he’d do.

    My favorite DADA professor was Remus Lupin, with a close second, Barty Crouch, Jr. (Yes, he was evil, but he was a surprisingly good teacher.) Oddly enough, Snape comes third. He KNOWS what he's talking about - he's just disgustingly mean about it all. Then, Quirrel-mort, because as much as the class was a joke (as discussed by the students), they obviously learned something. Umbridge was useless. She was put in place because she was useless, and she proved how useless she was, to no one's surprise.

    There wasn't a witch or wizard who went bad and also shared a body with the dark lord that wasn't in Ravenclaw... Is that the reason I'm in Ravenclaw? Also, Hagrid said that they only hired Lockhart because he was the literal only man for the job.

      midgetelantrian8 but if Snivilous was given the job something would've happened to him and Dumbledore knew the position was cursed and wouldn't want his number 1 spy to be decommissioned.

      wait, what? I can't remember anyone who shared their body with Voldy except Quirrell.
      I guess you could technically say Harry shared his body with Voldy's soul but Harry's a Gryffindor, not Ravelclaw.

      To be quite hones if i was Dumbeldore i would have given Snape the Defence Job and searched for another Potion Teacher. Yes maybe there is the Risk that Snape is gone in the end of the Year but at least he wouldnt have Umbritch in the School but than again Fudge would probably still make her High Iquisitor.

    I thought it was Lockhart, but maybe not. At one point, Harry asks Hagrid why the DADA teacher was hired for the job and Hagrid replies that it was because they were the ONLY applicant. The news having got around that the job was cursed. Wasn't that Lockhart?

    Fave Lockhart quote: "If I could do anything I think I would shrink myself to the size of a mouse. I would leave the world of men behind me forever and live amongst the mice." And Gilderoy is of course my fave DAtDA, after all he has won Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award 5 times.

    I feel like we need an over-arching SCB discussion about why Dumbledore seems, in hindsight, like such a bad mentor to Harry (constantly putting him in danger, not telling him vital information, etc.)

    • @quethesparkle
      @quethesparkle 6 лет назад +1

      He is a bad mentor. His goal is defeat voldemort. That is it. He literally convinced Harry he had to die. For the greater good ya know. He never was a mentor it was a farce he was just using him same as he used everyone else

      At the beginning of the series Dumbledore seemed like this awesome person but towards the end, as you grow up with Harry, you and Harry realize Dumbledore is a much more complicated person. In the Deathly Hallows you find out he was once freinds with Grindlewald.
      I feel like Dumbledore just uses people as pawns. For instance, he is shown as a person who knows most everything yet he never had Sirius get a trial after the First Wizarding War ended. You'd think Dumbledore would have some inkling that maybe Sirius is innocent. I think he suspected it but his new pawn was Harry. He sent Harry to live with the Dursleys for a reason. A freaking hippogriff got a trial yet not someone who was disowned by his family for being a Gryffindor and hanging out with muggleborns and half-bloods. If Sirius got a trial and was eventually proven innocent, Harry would have been raised by his Godfather. Dumbledore wanted Harry to be raised a certain way.
      I'm not saying Dumbledore is a bad person. I personally love some of the things he has said. It's just Dumbledore seems like the kind of person you really can't trust at times.

    • @ericpeterson8732
      @ericpeterson8732 6 лет назад

      Hazelmykitten wow! I never considered that before. Dumbledore let Sirius rot to "protect" Harry. Rather than letting him be raised by his godfather, he sent him to live with the Muggles. Perhaps he feared that Harry would have turned out like James, since Sirius was his best friend. Snape's flashbacks show that James Potter was a jerk before he got together with Lilly. And Sirius was also a jerk right along with him. Without Lilly's influence, Harry Potter could have ended up a villian? Idk about that. But it is curious.
