7:59 - actually, Voldemort jinxed the job after he was turned down by Dumbledore during his second interview. Dippet didn't turn him down the first time, he just said that he was too young and that he'll give him the job in a few years. Voldemort waited a much longer time, nearly a decade (after making Horcruxes) no it was around 1955. Harry came to Hogwarts in 1991, so it's around 36 years.

Dumbledore took over as headmaster some time between 1965 and 1971 (revealed by Lupin, after saying he was bitten age 5 and Dumbledore became headmaster and visited him to offer him a place at Hogwarts aged 11), so it could have been just twenty DADA teachers that they'd gone through before Harry started at Hogwarts.

What about the place where Dumbledore was referred to as "head of the transfiguration department?" A department is more than one person. What if, before the war with Voldy, there were more professors for each class? Jo has said that there are fewer students now than historically. So he and Merrythought could have been concurrent. Or he could have picked up an extra class or two when the year was very full of students. No one can deny he is qualified.

"Galatea Merrythought, who had been at Hogwarts for nearly 50 years"
The book never said that she taught defense of the dark arts the whole 50 years. Plenty of professors change positions.
Also, there are 7 levels of classes with extra curriculars. Dumbledore could have been teaching defense at the same time as Merrythought or been substituting for her.

ensabah1 also, the HP series have extremely small class sizes due to fallout from the wizarding war. Hogwarts usually has like 4?x as many students, so a "fresh-soph" teacher being different than the upper classes makes sense. You also want to learn from more than one person when tactical training is involved.

Dumbledore could have been one of many professors to teach DADA. At that time there could have been a lot of students, as it was before any conflict that reduced the amount of wizard offspring. As most college/universities have more than one professor per subject as well as a Head of the Department, Dumbledore could have been teaching DADA with several others. Well actually I have a small theory that Dumbledore taught a subject while he was headmaster but in this case teaches Alchemy, its a subject that only exists if there is sufficient need for it and let's be honest Dumbledore is the perfect teacher for that as he has plenty of experience in it due to his work with Nicholas Flamel. Now as I say this subject is prob not that frequent of a class so Dumbledore would have more free time.
Time is a major factor for teaching staff at Howarts. I mean McGonagal (I know i spelt that wrong!) teaches 3 classes a week per year twice (if two houses share a lesson) equalling 30 classes er week for years 1-5 and 6 classes for years 6-7 (if all houses share a lesson) that equals 36 classes over a 5 lesson day (maybe 6 but thats pushing it) so clearly she is too busy to teach all her her classes but she is a head of house and deputy headmistress so clearly this line of busy headmasters and busy staff is no excuse lol. If she can do it Dumbledore could be teaching 3 subjects while still being headmaster lol. :)

Big issue with your time line. The DADA job was jinxed after the second time Voldemort did not get the job, right before the first war, sometime in the 60’s. or 70’s. Not 1945. This was after his many years of travel. One of the selling points he made during his interview. My best guess is the interview occurred in 1970. Only 21 years until philosopher stone.

Furthermore, Voldemort definitely couldn't have cursed the position by the time of the second movie considering it takes place in 1927, and he wasn't born until 1926. So he wouldn't have even known of Hogwarts or his magical abilities yet, let alone had a hatred for being turned down a position at the school. I chalk this issue up to JKR just rewriting some of the lore once again, but I wouldn't find it too crazy of an idea that he just subbed in as a teacher in certain lessons when he could or when his skills were possibly more suited to a certain lesson.

One additional though (and this ties into the McGonagle video as well) prior to both the Wizarding wars with GG and TMR the magical population of Great Britain was much larger. they may have had more teachers in each subject. It also explains why the castle has so many unused classrooms. Merrythought and Dumbledore might have taught at the same time. And I believe Dumbledore might have been the head of the Transfigurations department when McGonagle joined the staff. APWBD obviously had had a mastery of all types of magic.

Doylist Reason; It's easier for Jude Law to act in such clothes.
Watsonian Reason #1: Dumbledore does have a fascination with muggle culture, though not nearly as much as Arthur Weasley. As he taught Muggle Studies, it is one of his fortes, along with his love of muggle sweets. It's not outside the realm of possibility for him to wear muggle clothes to better blend in with muggles.
Watsonian Reason #2: It was a flashback from Dumbledore's perspective, iirc (I could be wrong and that it was from Newt's)- either way, it's much easier to remember someone in their current getup than it is in their old getup years ago.

Little problem with this theory : Minerva McGonagall. We know that her time line is already completely messed up, but it even creates another problem in this case. Even if Dumbledore only teached DADA for a couple of years he would have been teaching Transfiguration the other years. But if McGonagall was there she would have been teaching this subject meaning Dumbledore must have been teaching DADA the entire time.

If there's an entire Transfiguration Department, assuming there were more students and, therefore, teachers, this far in the past, then he could have been doubling as both a Transfiguration and DADA professor with Merrythought either teaching different class blocks or perhaps just traveling or sick, with Minerva as a (time traveling) TA or something.

Dumbledore is totes manipulative enough to send one of his best friends and brightest students back in time to -manipulate- help younger him. Then she goes back to the 1950s before she attends school in the 30s and 40s, or maybe she just hides from her past self very well.

@@tappajaav True. Seven grades, two classes(at least, assuming all students attend the same classes, which is not true), effectively (two houses having classes together), in each grade, makes for 14 classes simultaneously(the lowest possible figure). Even with the multitude of classes offered at Hogwarts: Potions, DADA, Transfiguration, Charms, Music (they have a choir, so they must have a music teacher), Arithmancy, Runes, Astronomy, Care for Magical Creatures (I don't remember the class' name in English), Clairvoyance, Herbology, HoM, Flying, Muggle studies, etc. This should be too much for any one teacher to fulfill. In one week, assuming only the core subjects for 1-5 year, a potions teacher would have to teach 10 separate classes at least, just to give the students one class a week, and that is assuming the jigsaw of 3-5th year additional classes adds up so that no grade needs to split its core classes into several different classes to fit the schedule. Ever looked into the process of organizing classes, and you'll know this is wishful thinking. That means that a potions teacher, or any other core class teacher really, needs to teach 2 classes every day, and some lessons are double to fit the government required quota of hours spent on each class for each student. Assuming that every grade has one double lesson AND one single lesson for the core classes at least, means that a single teacher would have to teach 30 lessons each week, just to cover the ideal number of classes for 1-5th year only. Assuming three and a half periods a day, two lessons each (just cuz that was the average at my school), we get a total of 7 lessons a day, for a week total of 35 lessons, meaning, assuming teachers' days begin and end at similar times to the students', they would have only 5 lessons of free time, not counting breaks that are also required by law, to plan for their 20 different classes taught in the week, and correcting tests and other required paperwork. If we assume there are enough students in years 6 and 7 to also make up two classes each, and each of those needs 3 lessons a week, we get negative 7 lessons for a single teacher to use for planning and other work in a week. There MUST be more than one teacher in the core classes. At all times.

    • @got2strpk
      @got2strpk 3 года назад

Yeah but she was almost perfect with continuity before. There were a handful of mistakes like james coming out before lilly when voldemorts and harrys wand connected but it's well known dumbledore used to teach transfiguration, i can't see it being a mistake when so many potterheads play in the movies someone would've said something.

You know being a teacher myself, I can tell you typically before a new school year starts there is a big staff meeting, sometimes more than one, where we go over the new year, new curriculum, anything we need to know before the semester starts. We also meet any and all new staff. That includes teachers and custodial and administrative so... It never really felt to me like Hagrid knowing who Qurriel was before the year started was an issue considering how close to the term he had taken him shopping.

Does the jinx really originate from 1945? Dumbledore is the one to reject Voldemort which results in the jinx. As Dumbledore was not yet headmaster at that point, the jinx would have occurred far later.

Right he applied right after graduating, but Dippet, the headmaster at the time, felt he was too young. Then he reapplied when Dumbledore was headmaster. This was over a decade later. Dumbledore refused to because he felt Voldermort was using this position to create an army. This is when the curse was placed. I could be wrong though. I'm just going by what I remember.

Tyler White same here...but knew based on the quote used in the video the curse originates with the second application.
