Does Your Vet Have to Love Your Pet?

  • In this video, I share the experience I had with my beloved Don Pepas during a recent visit to the veterinarian. The visit turned into a nightmare, leaving both Don Pepas and me shaken. I try to find rationale in the behavior of the doctors, discuss the importance of emotional investment from veterinarians, and explore whether it's reasonable to expect them to truly care for our pets as we do.

Vets should be compassionate and understanding about the pets and pet owners. If they no longer have a love for animals, then they should stop treating them. Having a vet that you feel comfortable taking Don Pepas to is important. Keep looking for a vet that you like and is willing to treat Don Pepas.

If you're asking the question, you already know the answer. Alot of red flags at that vet. I've never heard of doing any of that stuff. You'll have to do research on another vet. My biggest thing that irks me is when a vet says ' let's keep em overnight for observation '. I lost my little dog to that scam. I asked, There's nobody there working all night to watch the pets. They don't ask that anymore to me anyway. I hope your able to find a solution soon. Thanks for the update.

Brigitte L Jones. I really sympathise with you and Don Pepas. Being a small cat, an ex stray he could have weaker immune system and need to avoid procedures, unless a vet thinks there is a reason to investigate or do a blood panel. Adopting a cat who has lived as a stray for a period or even a moggie who gets to go outside doesn't make easy cat patients for women like us. Indoor & pedigree cats are easier to handle with health issue. Persist in finding a Vet practice that suits you. Or maybe adapt to this 2 km away Vet practise and learn to work with them. They did not wreck your cat. Your cat has developed a sensitivity to something plus has a tendency to vomit easily. There is usually an unimportant reason.Don't worry about the vomiting if he maintains weight as have had some cats like this. Make sure he is not getting hairballs. HIS REACTION TO THE SEDATING WAS JUST BAD LUCK, HIS INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE TO IT. His fetish with his nails has come out of feeling very vulnerable. Plus remembering he went in with half grown nails and ended up with them gone.Cats don't care about shaved off fur, but you care and need to get over it. The more confident and relaxed you can get, the more reassured Don Pepas will feel.
All my💖 love to you both.

I am so sorry to hear that Don Pepas is not feeling well.
Does your vet have to adore your pet? Absolutely! My sister usually handles all the medical stuff for the kitties, but I've tagged along on a few vet trips. And let me tell you, I've seen some amazing love and care for all of the kitties - Ping Pong, Tiger, and the new ones, Joey, Sparkles, and Peanut. Just two weeks ago, during a visit for the new additions, the vet and their team took my sister to the back room to show them the pictures I had given them of Ping Pong and Tiger, who have passed away. They placed the photos in a special spot because they cherished those kitties so much. It's clear that our vet truly loves all of their client's pets, past and present.

What kind of food does Don usually eat? Wet? Dry? Give him what he likes! Maybe mix a little pumpkin in - pumpkin is good for his tummy.
Some of your subscribers have given some great advice on finding a new, better, kinder vet! But maybe for the time being, let Don have the food he wants, give him a couple of weeks to calm down and then go from there.
YOU & DON deserve respect & assistance from the vet!
Please give Don my love, a hug and i am sending you a hug as well - i am sure you can use it! Our animals - cats, dogs, guinea pigs & Pumas(!) are our children & they should be treated as such!🐱❤️🫶😘🙏🙏🙏🫂

Unfortunately, this happens not only with veterinarians but also with other professions. It seems it is getting worse now than in the past due to rampant inflation. I'm not sure if one of my cats was put under anesthesia just for an ultrasound. I know for dental cleaning they were. But ultrasound? I think the doctor can tell if the cat will be combative for the fur shaving. It took more than 24 hours for Don Pepas to recover from the anesthesia?! That's too long. I have a very hard time finding a very good vet too. I had two really good ones years ago, but they retired. I'm not sure how the legal process would work against a veterinarian. But some really need to be sued for their negligence. Our pets are our family.

In my opinion if you are a doctor of any kind, you should be invested in the health and well being of your patient. Whether it be there physical or mental health, they should be kind and caring. Unfortunately today it is very hard to find a doctor or veterinary that is in the business to help and actually care about them. If they ask for money up front, and demand unreasonable procedures, they are only in it for the money. I'm so angry that you and sweet Don Pepas had to go through all this mistreatment. My question is, is there anywhere in California to report these despicable veterinarians too? In Canada we have places to report them to. If it were me Lillian, I would definitely hold them responsible. Social media is a very wonderful starting place in exposing these injustices. Take care sending ❤️🙏 to you both

Today the doctor called to say that the blood test was normal, but urine showed kidney failure. I said I refused to listen to anything she was saying and if that was the case, I would just let it take its course. She didn’t insist on any prescription, just the diet.
Now I need to think what to interest Don Pepas with 🍖🍗🥓🥘

Brigitte L Jones. It's hard to tell if your vets did not like your cat or were not tolerant about you seeming an owner who can't rapidly move on with your options- OK just change the brand of vet food. The way you express your inability to do things your cat does not like" I can't do what he needs even if it's of benefit to him", rather than concerns about managing him while prepared to learn which gets a vet's alarm bells going. The vet is thinking how much point is there in any procedures investigating the cat if the results come up with further treatment, eg. like a surgery and cat needs to wear an Elizabethan collar or needs follow up meds for her to administer?? To not be able to be contacted by phone throughout the day is to the vets unimaginable if your cat is a priority. If you are a scuba diver and can't get to your phone it's expected that you have delegated a family member or friend you can trust to take the call.Sometimes they discover during an ultra sound a very painful terminal condition they may consider it more merciful not to wake the cat from and need permission or move onto an extra procedure that can be done while still sedated and need permission for. Don Pepas was probably not oversedated, they observe his vital signs that indicate how he is coping. Don pepas just had a some individual neurological reaction that he should get over. I had a wonderful cat that had once a bad reaction to a longer anesthetic ending up having some upsetting neurological spells where he went around in circles ( couple of months) and needed antiinflamitory med for weeks till it resolved. In Australia the vets practice the same way in they way the communicate, set times, set calls, limited personal contact to a consultation with cat. Even ethical caring practises need to do this as the variety of very costly medical machines & instruments they need to be equiped with in a single practise these days. They are akin to major general human hospitals without the extra funding provided for humans. So time really becomes money. If they are can't sustain being efficient enough by keeping communication time limited to the essentials, their prices would become unaffordable for many owners. Those of us who are older remember a more personal approach. My sons generation who are used to this style of communication in their profession are so very popular with today's Vets. Ex husbands work required the same communication and eventually I had him take my cats to the the vets without me with a few points in a note or email for what my Ex would not know. The vets were more happy with EX and even cat was calmer.I used the Vet practises mobile home visit service paying a bit extra for Leopold to have a check up in the home. They have also a van for treatments which he did not need or would have liked.

HI Lilian and dear Don Pepas. Start doing research on other vets close to you. Maybe you can reach out to friends in your area or on social media to get some reccomendations. You can't take him back there.
For now, just feed him what he likes to eat until he gains some weight, and give him lots of extra attention. I know you feel helpless and vulnerable but you are not. You are the one paying the bill. I know you are a polite person and you probably don't like confrontation, but sometimes this is the only thing people understand. You need to be polite but firm when you find another vet, let them know that even though they have their rules and procedures, you expect a certain level of care and communication for your beloved family member.
I have been in business for the past 40 years. One thing is paramount as far as I am concerned if I want to stay in business. The customer needs to know you care about his or her issues and that you want them to be satisfied. Basically, whatever business you are in this is the bottom line.
Sometimes business owners forget this if they are making money. It only takes a few really angry customers and social media posts to make them take notice. If they treat their customers badly sooner or later they will face the consquences.
Your vet is going to face the consquence of losing a customer, and I'm sure you aren't the only one. Try to put this experience behind you and concentrate on Don Pepas. You will find a new vet, you do not need to subject either Don P or yourself to this poor treatment. Best of luck with this, hugs to you and DP!

This is a bit long. I have experience with this situation.
    1. Find a new vet immediately. OR take DP to a vet emergency center (this may be very expensive, but critical to get him hydrated, etc.).
    2. Put your concerns about Don Pepas' health in writing to get Healthcare providers up to speed on the situation, without having to spend time and emotional energy at the appointment at the expense of exam and treatment.
    3. TAKE SOMEONE with you to visits, if you can. You do not need to do this alone!
    4. Forget that the nasty vets exist. Deal with that after Don Pepas is better. Don't waste the psychic energy that Don Pepas needs to heal on those horrible people.
