they make a yellow tape that you can buy in a hardware store. It works like the Blue painters tape but is lighter weight. (artist painters use it) You might have used that to keep the stain away from the rest of the pot.
Its easy to wipe of :-)
maybe a copper carbonate engobe/underglaze and then when greenware stage scrape it off the surface.
