      A good day to you, John. My vote is to stay with your current format. The bit of walk-about London scenery has bee a very nice way to start the videos. As for “not filming others” exhibiting horrid behaviors, that is simply not what I have seen. For example, “the slap” most recently, and there are several others that you have documented that are not dressed as Hasidic ultra orthodox. The simple fact is that, nearly every time, those , sporting Payos, & dressed like ultra orthodox, Hasidics show up, they are simply awful. Their behaviors towards the Gatesman, guards, and sometimes mounted troopers, and other visitors is insulting, rude, offensive, monopolizing, and mocking. It is what it is, John, and your videos speak volumes about this… ‘nough said.

    John, please continue your walks to the Horse Guards. At 78, I know I will never get to visit London, so enjoy getting to see the architecture and the ceremonial traditions. John, thank you for taking this opportunity to carefully explain why so many, including the guards, have a problem with the behaviour of that group. You are correct in describing the reason for their strange, staring and potentially taunting behaviour as being cultural. But it is their problem and they have been living with it for thousands of years. Thanks for the content John, always good. And the pre-amble strolls are great. Keep please

    John, at this stage of my life, I will probably never get back to England. Your walks to the Guards is one of the best parts of your video. There is always so much going on, and to be able to see, and almost feel like you're taking part in it, is wonderful! Even if you take the same route every time, there is always something new to see. Also, I totally agree with you about the "idiot" tourists. There IS a definite trend of a certain group acting very disrespectfully. There will always be that one, in a crowd, that will act the fool, but when it's a whole group, they do tend to stand out.

      @LondonCityWalks  7 месяцев назад +49

      My personal opinion is that would be tantamount to admitting 'defeat'. After 200+ years of a King's Life Guard at Horse Guards, why should the dreadful behaviour of an uncivilised few spoil it for the 99.9% of lovely visitors, tourists and guests who enjoy this glorious city.

    • @kateking3953
      @kateking3953 7 месяцев назад +35

      @@LondonCityWalks 200, 100 and 50 years ago there were not the vast numbers of people now milling around. London is now like Venice or Amsterdam or Barcelona in parts, with a polyglot and largely unaware of anything but their own interests agglomeration of people. Fine for the other people who are willing to endure it. Not so good to expect animals to. As a horse person I would say you can train a horse from here to kingdom come, but it will still be a horse, feel like a horse, respond like a horse, and like people they differ widely in temperament. Some can tolerate the hordes - some very clearly can't. Ormonde is a case in point. While it might be 'amusing' to see him pushing and biting, it's a sign of anxiety and distress because he can't get away from it.

      The Troopers and horses in the box are on a public footpath in Whitehall under Westminster council not MOD , plus fencing them in is potentially dangerous to horse and Trooper if the horse has a " meltdown " and runs forward as we have seen happen !

    • @suburbanbanshee
      @suburbanbanshee 7 месяцев назад +13

      Aside from temperament differences, there probably does just Ned to be more training. Traditionally, cavalry horses were trained to be calm and cool, and the UK cavalry training methods were humane, sensible, and super-thorough. They were guven experience around dead bodies, gunshots and loud noises were used as their dinner bell, and basically they got used to humans doing every kind of weird thing, all day and every day. So that they were bored by stuff they should not react to, and interested in things that should cause a reaction.
      Obviously weird tourist training is currently needed more than exposure to battlefield sights and sounds, but it could be done.

    • @suburbanbanshee

    Well said. It really doesn’t matter where tourists are from as I’ve watched most days & seen French, Greek etc being rude. However, it’s a fact that the certain group mentioned are damn rude & disrespectful & do go out of their way to stare out the guards.

    I enjoy your morning walk to horse guards. I think it's because most of the scenery is an older side of London. The buildings are beautiful and the architecture is beautiful. I often wonder how they made them so long ago, I'm speaking of the decorations, I can't think of a better word off hand, instead of just being flat walls and boring. They had to make molds and pour it, then lift it to put together without breaking it. No lifts or craines or hydrolics. That would be pure horse power I'm assuming. I love old stuff. The buildings have stood a really long time, alot of new buildings don't last half as long

      No they have to be able to ride any horse , though I'm sure they all have their favourites 😀. When not on ceremonial duty as boxmen , gatesman or chitsman there are another 10 horses to be looked after , mucked out , fed , tack checked and kept clean , kit brought with them packed or unpacked . HorseGuards parade the building was built in the mid 18th century Palladian style specifically for the use of the HouseHold Cavalry as a barracks and stables. The building originally formed the official entry to St James palace, and as such had guards mounted to defend it. It still acts as an access way to the Mall and St James and Buckingham Palaces and Clarence House(formerly the home of the Queen mother and then the Prince of Wales(now HRH Charles III). The uniforms, whist looking very ornate today are actually pretty much standard heavy dragoons dress from around the early 19th century. In fact I know I’ve seen a Victorian postcard from early 18something 😂 (yes I know my dates are precise)showing a trooper in pretty much the same uniform as today. Ofc uniforms were changed by degrees over the years….these regiments WERE founded in the 1600s but the basis of the ceremonial uniform is from the 1800s, with the cuirass, helmet and boots(jackboots of the same type were standard dress for dragoons). It consists of the woolen tunic in regimental colours(either scarlet or navy), white breeches(called buckskins), white cross belts which hold the “cartouche” on the back which was originally an ammo store(yes on the back….the idea was to keep the front of the body clear and besides a cavalry unit operated as a team. You can always ask the guy next to you to access it), a sword and scabbard, the jackboots and spurs(dummy spurs today), a short cuirass front and back, white gauntlets and the helmet with either a red or white plume depending on the regiment. The horses wear what is basically a halter or headcollar fitted with a double bridle bit set up(bit and curb chain). This way instead of having to remove the whole thing and then put on a headcollar, not to mention not having to carry a headcollar, they could simply remove the bit and tether the horse using the bright chain. The headpiece(behind the ears) is covered in metal decorative work which was supposedly originally to ward off sabre slashes. The browband on a trooper mount is white, metal on an officers charger. The horses also wear a “ bright chain”. This is a light chain that is attached to the bridle and looped around the neck. In the times when horses were used in campaigns, they were picketed before actions. There’s the story that it’s metal because a starving horse would eat leather, but I suspect that’s apocryphal, since a starving horse isn’t going to be much use in a charge, but metal is stronger than leather or rope.
