    This mansion is gorgeous!! So sad that it's been abandoned. I especially love the beautiful lounge chairs in the sunroom. Absolutely adorable. Interior of home looks to be in pretty good shape. It's upsetting to know that vandalism and robbery has taken place. I hope that someone will get this home and make it lovely again. Be safe and Blessed be.

    This is a beautiful place and it deserves to be saved. It's unlikely that anyone would use such a large building for their home as upkeep of these can be pretty steep, but it could be repurposed as a hotel or event hall or something.

    I believe yes, they should! With the way the world is so messed up, no jobs, no affordable housing , letting a place rot for no good reason while there is families living on the streets and living in tents, is just deplorable. Give it to people who wants to help others come back to feeling human. Anyone can get grants so provide one or this place to help the homeless or to veterans!

    Neglect is also a form of vandalism.
    Some are so wealthy that a piece of land is an appreciating asset and just left with whatever is on it.
    You did a great video on Woolmanhill Hospital in Aberdeen. Just up the road there’s a huge old mill complex which has lain derelict for many years.
    This is not right but is the reality we are made to live in by the power of private wealth over public need.

    I loved this house! The troughs and pools in the outer buildings were for the koi - as they grew bigger they would be transferred to the larger containers and eventually the biggest pond. I lived next door to a koi farm - it was fascinating.
    I do think if people do not maintain vacant property they should be able to be claimed by local government to invest in for rehabbing and resale- a sort of economic incubator. Otherwise the properties around it lose value.

      Not really. A lot of the time, it is quite easy to find out why a building has become vacant and in that case, we include it in the video. However, with mansions and homes like this, the reasoning might be quite personal so we don't seek every detail, as opposed to a business going bust/lack of visitors etc

    Nice video! Its wonderful that you were able to document it before it was trashed. So sad. When I watch these videos, and see all the remains of a life interrupted, I think of the poem written by Joyce Kilmer, "The House With Nobody In It." --
    "Whenever I walk to Suffern, along the Erie track,
    I go by a poor old farmhouse, with its shingles broken and black.
    I suppose I've passed it a hundred times, but I always stop for a minute,
    and look at the house, the tragic house, the house with nobody in it.
    I never have seen a haunted house, but I hear there are such things;
    That they hold the talk of spirits, their mirth and sorrowings.
    I know this house isn’t haunted, and I wish it were, I do;
    For it wouldn’t be so lonely if it had a ghost or two.
    This house on the road to Suffern needs a dozen panes of glass,
    And somebody ought to weed the walk and take a scythe to the grass.
    It needs new paint and shingles, and the vines should be trimmed and tied;
    But what it needs the most of all is some people living inside."
    In regards to the question you posed at the beginning of the video, I think that allowing someone to live there and act as a caretaker should definitely be allowed, even encouraged, especially today, with so many people needing housing. It doesn't hurt the owners who have given the property over to wrack and ruin,, gives someone a roof over their heads, and keeps the property from being vandalized. A win win for everyone!

  • @CATASTEROID934

    My god my heart skipped a beat when I saw the front of building and I had to double take whether it was the place I knew- I used to live just a minute's walk from this place and I used to pass it every day, the front windows and doors were totally boarded up a few months ago- I'd don't doubt it's been trashed by now. I had wondered why the fish farm's signs weren't there any more and my grandmother kept saying it was a shame what happened to them, I'll send her a link to this video. I used to be able to see the koi ponds from the first floor window. There's a small series of pillboxes along the river in that area, I used to take refuge in one after rows with my family.

    Hi Lads, great but sad video! Your coverage and commentary was as always first class but it is so sad to see what was obviously a fantastic home and business being allowed to fall into such a sate of disrepair. When properties like this are not under someone's day to day control then sadly that's when the thieves and vandals step in, so therefore its my believe that any residential property should be taken over after a period of time by the local authorities or an appointed organisation to either sell the property on or make it habitable. With the amount of residential property that is left abandoned and the massive shortage of property its little wonder that youngsters cant get on the housing ladder be that ownership or rental. Thanks again for the efforts you go to, to showcase these property's and your care in trying to protect what you find.

    I first saw this quite some time ago, when I first became interested in urban exploring, it was called The Lake House, and then it must have become recently abandoned, the place was still very good then, and it looked like it was being used as a care home. The indoor pool was partly covered up to make a bigger dining area, and it could have been uncovered to use again, as the floor was suspended, and the pool still in place. It was said then that the place was in limbo due to being stuck in probate, and no one wanting to take responsibility, just in case they didn't benefit from it in the end. At that time there was a great deal of glass wear, crockery, etc, that were smashed in the pantry, and as time went on the place has deteriorated really badly, I haven't seen it crop up for some time, and its a shock to see it now.

Then the shallow pools I would have been ponds where they would grow, before they were eventually placed into the larger outdoor pool for them to grow to full size. The last home she was left was my grandparents home. They died the same year along with my father. She still pays the electricity and water. It just sits there. I think that if a property is left empty & unattended for more than 5 years, without the owners contacting the local authorities to state their intentions for use of the property within 2 years, then the local authorities should have a right to take charge of the property put the owners personal belongings & any items of value into secure storage, carry out whatever repairs are necessary & then use the property for purposes necessary to the local community. This might mean using it for homeless accommodation or to provide affordable offices for local organisations & businesses for example.
    If heirs to the property turn-up, then they can reclaim the property by paying off the costs of any repairs & refurbishment not covered by any rent collected, provided they put in a claim within 15 years of the property falling empty. Once the 12 year mark has been reached local history societies can have access to any documents, artifacts & photographs they are interested in & after 15 years the property can be claimed by the local authorities for use for local benefit. If heirs turn up more than 15 years after the property has been left unnocupied & unnatended then all the heirs will be able to claim is a photographic record of the property & family photographs & documents such have been kept by the local history society.
    I know some will disagree with this but I think it is better than letting buildings decay to a state where they are no use to anyone. Especially whilst people are homeless & local charities get disbanded for want of affordable accomodation.
    After all if a family does nothing to take care of a property for 15 years they cannot need it & cannot reasonably expect it to be sitting there just as they left it. If anyone who knows they had relatives in an area & might just possibly inherit property there, they can always check with the local authorities.
    Leaving a property empty often has a negative effect on the whole area & whole community.

    I think there should be someone who can take over these abandoned properties straight after you look at them so they can be turned into a hotel or flats or whatever

    THIS PROPERTY CAN BE MADE TO BE *BETTER THAN EVER* AND A REAL SHOWPIECE THAT THE ENTIRE TOWN CAN PARTAKE IN AND ENJOY AND PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD WILL SURELY LOVE TO COME AND PARTAKE...IF TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND DONE WELL. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO COST THAT MUCH TO REFURBISH EVERYTHING! INCLUDING THE FLOORING. LEAVING NOTHING UNTURNED. YES. IT CAN EASILY BE MADE INTO A THRIVING BUSINESS AND WONDERFUL PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO COME. IT WILL MORE THAN PAY FOR ITSELF AND BE AN INCREDIBLE, LONGLASTING INVESTMENT THAT PAYS DIVIDENDS ALL YEAR LONG FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. NEVER SELLING IT OFF....OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE TOWNSPEOPLE. THIS CAN BE UTILIZED IN A WAY THAT BRINGS COMMERCE TO ALL THE SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE TOWN. *THINK!!! THINK WELL. BUST A MOVE!!*

    what a fantastic place ,shame the family couldnt look after it or get a caretaker in ,i agree there should be some kind of commitee or group that cares for these places to stop vandelism ,its possible someone with plenty of time and cash could do it up to its former glory and make it a happy home again ,the troughs were probably for baby fish to get to a certain size before going into the bigger pools then on to the outside lake ,those bamboo sunloungers were really something else they were beautiful,anyway thank you for the video and your compassionate commentry i hope the vandals keep away so other explorers can enjoy the experiance .

    The tanks indoors are the breeding and brooding tanks. Once they reach a certain size, they put them out in the lake or sell them. It is really sad that it is in the condition it is.

    I think buildings like this should be given abandoned status and if still abandoned after 5 years then it is a forced sale to whichever local council they are in, then the community can benefit from the space with whatever is built in its place

    • @Urbandoned

      All to often it is the council who abandon building, they also have the power to order derelict buildings to be maintained. There is a law proposed which could see owners of derelict buildings fined but it is councils who will administrat this law.
      Also point out that people/companies who want to renovate listed building face considrable obsticals from the council and other institutions.
      Had friends who wanted to save a listed barn, turn it into a house, ended up demolishing it as it was unsafe but the council kept refusing premission to save it.

    Properties like this are a minefield when it comes to taking responsibility on who owns it and who is prepared to look after it , no security company will take it on unless they get paid , it still has good value and someone must fall in line to inherit the building .

    It's really a shame that people won't vandalize other people's property and don't really give a s*** then people should be held responsible for tearing other people's properties when the family might leave it behind because their mama dad's passed away
