At 73 years old, I have just started learning to play the guitar (primarily electric). I have been having so much trouble properly fretting a note, that I was ready to give up before I even got started. So I wanted to learn how to do it properly and that is how I came upon your videos. They will be my musical salvation! I was doing several things wrong, so all the practice in the world wouldn't have helped. So THANK YOU!

This is probably one of the easiest, best-explained examples on fretting I've seen! As a really ENTRY-level guitar player, I've seen just about every video on it I can find.
Since my recessive hand isn't as dexterous as my other, I've had trouble fretting, but this actually may help some as I'm just starting out!

lifesaver of a video. i was getting the *dink* sounds and didnt know why, now i know it was due to me thinking you had to lightly press on the string instead of making a new endpoint on the string with your finger, raising the pitch

This dude is legit. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but he basically talks straight though and there's very little editing or re-takes. He really knows what he's talking about and he has taught it so many times. I respect his skill as a teacher 😊

I am a complete noob and I struggle myself to play even basic chords but I believe it is important to mention few things:
    1) Do not forget about correct wrist-forearm alignment which most of the time should be in a straight line or slightly bent. If you do not do it, then you might suffer real wrist pain like I did. Unfortunately the more straight u keep them, the less clearance space there is between hand palm and the neck, the harder it is to play chords properly
    2) I also heard that noobs should strive to keep their left hand fingers as parallel as they can most of the time, probably so you avoid the over-rotation of you wrist as you learn basic chords. In other words, your palm of the hand should face guitar neck most of the time with as little rotation towards your eyes/body or away from you as possible.
3)There is also no mention of how to press on strings properly. Most of us know by now that you should press on them with the very tip of your fingers. But what if you press on them with downward force but you pull them slightly towards your hand as you do it? Is it wrong to do so even when it sounds good? Sometimes I need to do it or else pulling on the neighbouring string will smash with high pitch sound against my nail. For example, when I play with a finger on E and H/B string on third fret,( leaving G open), and with the middle and the second finger on D and A strings on a second fret, I pull my ring finger towards me as I pick open G string, otherwise it will most certainly hit my nail on the ring finger. I can avoid it by pulling it with little force but then the sound is way lower. (I do not use a pick in this example)
All these issues make it incredibly hard for untalented beginners to learn a correct form on their own, especially since there are many scenarios where you need to break some of these rules as you progress in your practice. :c

Thanks for the great tips. Having short fingers and hands makes it much harder. But I think with time it gets easier. I'm super newbie and I am trying to develop good habits and technique from the get go so I don't have much issues in the future. It's annoying to do these exercises over and over though 😅

Your advice on dropping thumb is great for improving your fretting technique BUT again like most videos on this topic completely omit to mention that you cannot keep your wrist/elbow excessively bent or you will injure yourself over long time!!

On fender play in the beginner section, they say play between the frets. Does it really matter if it’s behind the fret or between?

Great info! I started playing about 13 years ago and very often get muted or tingy sounds. I thought it was because my hands are so small and I just can't reach very well. I am trying the bent knuckles, dots on my fingertips and placing my fingertips right behind the fret. And it sounds awesome! So, I decided to try these techniques while playing a simple B7 chord because Bs are mega hard. Here is the small hand issue again. Getting my fingertips to press next to the frets and spreading my fingers from the second to the fourth fret is challenging. How can I get my first fingertip on the string in the right spot, hard enough and still reach the fourth fret with my ring and pinky finger? While stretching my last two fingers to the fourth fret, my first finger falls sideways and the string doesn't get pushed down hard enough. I've tried changing my posture and twisting my wrist (hard to do with my carpal tunnel brace - but not impossible, just painful). If I haven't reached that video yet, forgive my impatience. Your first two videos have been incredible. Thanks!

Okay, so for the curled knuckle technique, I know you said to curl the last knuckle as much as possible, but which knuckle were you talking about...the thumb? Also, what did you mean by "it should be white"?

I started to play guitar for the benefit of my son. I told my son when he was around 11yrs. old that we could go but two Guitars today or wait a yr. It was a lesson in why wait. Anyway he is playing the guitar pretty good. But me, I stopped practicing . Now I am back trying to learn again. It not doing as good as I would have liked and regret that I stopped.

I'm green at playing guitar I have 2 struggles #1. My finger tips do touch other strings. #2 My number 1 finger aka the pointer I have a hard time reaching the top E string. My wrist is restricts me. I have started stretching to be able to twist so my fingers can be straight on the fretboard.

  • @rikdutta4778

I have this ridiculous problem everytime I play C major. My 3rd finger holding down the 3rd fret of the 5th string kinda turns down the sound made by placing the 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string. Not muting it, but it lowers the volume down, as if it was struggling for space to vibrate. I think it's because my fingers are fat, but whenever I think about it someone told me that it doesn't matter. Then how can I avoid this? It's my 4th day with my new accoustic guitar. I'm starting to think I made the wrong choice with the guitar as well.

The meat under my nails is really long, and I can’t cut my nails that much cause the nails bed will start hurting then.So sometimes I feel the nail touching the fretboard.

How do I prevent my guitar from moving while fretting? I keep getting that problem. I realized that to counter this I started stabilizing it with the palm (the area between the thumb and first finger) of my fretting hand. However, I now get a muted high E string from time to time :/. How do I address this?

    • @stefanos7724
      @stefanos7724 3 года назад

Hold/grip your guitar with your right/picking hand and your leg, maybe even your chest. You want to grip the guitar in such a way so that you can stabilize it easily without using your fretting hand. On electric place the forearm of your picking hand on top of the guitar so that you stabilize it. On acoustic just place your elbow on top. Watch a video on how to hold a guitar.

I play self thought from 20 years, being a total sh*t. Now I have tons of bad habits, it’s very hard to lose them. I still can make mistakes on playing a chord, or picking the wrong string, I can’t even play leads. I pick the guitar for the love of it, and at the end of the session I hate myself and my guitar. It’s horrible.
It’s very important to have a good hands setup on your guitar from the beginning. Listen to this teacher or you will be me.
(Ps it’s a true story, not joking)

Unfortunately, I've done the other kind of "fretting." Made my hair gray at an early age. Right now I'm fretting the concept of my wife having cancer in her "female" parts and has to have surgery.
