So while convenient, a monitor/keyboard combo is not a requirement to connect to a Dell server with an unknown IP. Even if the LAN runs on a different IP network (e.g. 192.168.1.x instead of the 192.168.0.x as this server was statically set to), one can give their PC manually a separate IP address from the server's network in order to log in headless. 22:06 "Let's power this machine up" You can also do that from the Java console you just launched. Great video. I solved the iDRAC upgrade issues (on an R415) going to v2.90 in one go by downloading iDRAC6_2.90_A00_FW_IMG.exe. It creates a folder with the D6 file that you can upgrade directly through the iDRAC interface (iDRAC Settings / Update).
@Art of Server Did you ever figure out the BMC update? I believe you have to remove the idrac to get the Update to take, since the Idrac takes it's place
No, I never bothered to look into that further. On other 11th gen servers, I didn't have this issue so not sure. But your suggestion might be worth trying out. Thanks for sharing! :-)
I found the easiest way to do the updates was to install Windows Server (temporarily) and then download and run the SUU (Server Update Utility). It caught everything for the R710, including the network stuff. You can find an .iso for it on dell's driver page by searching for "server update".
Wow, very timely. Got an old R410 that’s collecting dust and been wanting to put in to service. Just the push I needed, thank you! As I follow along on this first part, I noticed that as you selected the downloaded viewer file, Java launched and the KVN app launched. For the novices, and IT newbies like me, did you have do load some app from Dell that then used an installed version of Java to display the remote session to the server? I’m using a Mac and Chrome to connect it iDRAC. It works, but then I get the prompt asking me what app I need to associate to the file in order to open the file. And thanks for this series, very helpful!
@@ArtofServer OK, thanks, I also note the OS difference (Mac VS. Linux). For the most part, iDRAC is getting a mud hole stomped thru it for PC and Mac. Too many security features of late from Oracle, makers of Java Web Start, just kill the iDrac application -- not good for me, but if you have direction, please share in upcoming vlog. Followed all of your directions, but as you predicted, later version of Java Web Start make the iDRAC app inoperable for Mac and PC. But given it's a remote app, I can also just get some exercise and walk over to the server and do the some thing, which I've been doing. I'm not setting up a NAS server, but have been scouring the net for the benefits of IT mode, because thanks to you I now know what that SAS 1.0 controller card in my server is worth -- seems worthy! But can you provide more information? Thanks! And keep the content coming. Very informative!
@@ArtofServer Yes. There seems to be new security in Java 8, 151 for both the PC and Mac, where if you modify out RC4, as you suggest, one still ends up with an error re: jar file doesn't contain the permissions to complete the web start, and it fails. Very frustrating.
Did you ever figure out your issues with BMC updates? I am also unable to update My R410 BMC firmware. Attempting to use ipmitool to set fan speed controls, but not able to communicate. Great video series, thanks.
Thank you very much for going so incredibly in-depth on this historic, yet useful piece of hardware. Just today I struggled through all the firmware updates, concluding that I actually needed to boot Linux from a USB drive. I normally run ESXi and the updaters don't work there. I ran into the same issues you did with the BMC updater and I'm actually starting to think that it will only work on either a Win 2k8 / 2k12 boot, or from a RHEL 5 derivative. My USB drive booted CentOS 6, so that wouldn't fly. I'll give CentOS 5 a shot soon. Also, with regards to the BMC update: it does have one use. Supposedly it will help you make the fans quieter! There's an issue with the #4 fan, which runs at very high speeds on lower BMC versions, making lots of noise.
I've learned a lot in the past 24h and will probs make a blog post out of it. Basically, if you're dead-set on doing the BMC update: use a FreeDOS boot DVD, extract the PER410*.exe file for the BMC updater and put the contents on a USB drive, connect the USB drive before booting from the DVD. The system will also refuse to flash the BMC as long as the iDRAC is installed, so you'd have to remove both daughter cards.
@@ArtofServer I did end up making a blog post about my learning process and thanks to a Redditor who reviewed it I've learned the absolute easiest and safest way of applying firmware updates. Check Dell's instruction video here -> ruclips.net/video/oESireoKiiA/видео.html They provide complete "SUU" ISO images with all updates, which may be used from Linux, Windows or the LCM!
Are you telneting in or RDP in? Could you show that in separates video. I think a lot people will like it. I am glue in your channel right now. Just got whole lot of DELL servers and try to start working on them. thanks.
So after 4 years of having fun with the r410 I've changed my setup. Now the question: can I reset the idrac via its webgui? I haven't a vga monitor anymore 😬
I often find used server rack gear from eBay. Word of caution though, if you buy a used KMM (keyboard monitor mouse) unit like I have, make sure it comes with the rails as they sometimes get split and are almost impossible to find the rails separately. Try to buy the KMM as a complete unit and make sure to ask the seller and verify it is complete.
Can you explain why you install the iDRAC Enterprise card instead of just upgrading the embedded card with an Enterprise license? What are the benefits?
The 11th gen Dell servers didn't have a embedded card where you can install a license to enable the feature. That started with the 12th gen servers. On the 11th gen, the iDRAC6 modules (express + enterprise) determined the features you get.
Also, on the drac use 1.5A02 to get past the idrac the first time (especially if its never been updated 1.11-1.20 is rediculous to get out of) , if u need a copy send me an email & ill send u the update file.. (sorry guys i dont have the bandwidth to host it publicly but will pass it along to someone who can?)
While this guide is helpful and makes alot of sense, Im having a hard time getting CentOS on a bootable OS like you have. Do you have a guide on how this has been done as it seems to have been glossed over
I was thinking of getting one of these this for my personal workstation. I'm not much of a gamer these days, but I always have friends online who ask me to join them on games. Anyway, you said "PCI" slot and video cards usually use PCIe, so I'm not able to install any kind of video card. Oh well, I guess I have to give my friends the "BAD" news... lol (really, this saved me from the trouble, thank you) Edit: oh crap, I saw this on Dell's pdf: 1 x PCIe x16 (True x16, Gen2);full height, half length I really wanted to give them the "bad" news! lol
I don't know if you check respond to old videos but I am having issues with my r410. I don't really know what I am doing but I bought it to mess around and try and learn how it all works and create a media center to store my pictures and what not. I changed the setting like you did, and I have the iDRAC6 plugged into Ethernet but when I type in the IP address it tells me it is unable to connect. Not sure what I am doing or if I am on the right track or even how to ask the right questions. Is there any way you can help?
Hey I have a question. I have a Apple xserve I want to find a mother board I can use the memory, and processors from this in. The ones in it are dual core. and pretty much trash the rest of the server since I"m not much of and Apple fan. The X serve I have it works I just not have a key board or software for it to boot it all the way up. I can't get much to happen on it since I guess you have to have a apple keyboard to beable to do anything with it .
The CentOS7 bootable USB drive was setup like I showed in this video: ruclips.net/video/laC7nsY1SyM/видео.html (except the video is CentOS 8, but the process is the same).

And after finsh all , when you boot , you will see now dive in windows box setup If you have any solution plz replay
With the repository manager: This is where I had to setup the repository on an ftp and configure the lifecycle controller to connect to it like it was the actual dell ftp because the iso or the other option wasn't working.
The ISO option was working for me, just the DRM didn't recognize the BMC firmware update at all... so it didn't include it in the bootable ISO i made with it.
Thanks to your Dell R710 series, I grabbed one on ebay and have it all set up for Freenas. Now I need to put it in my rack and am having trouble figuring out what kind of rack rail to get. The problem is my rack is mostly for AV equipment and is only 23.75" deep and it looks like most rails require a deeper rack. I found one on racksolutions for $175, but I was hoping for something cheaper. Any suggestions?
Hmmm... That's a tough question. I've only ever used actual server racks. Maybe use a shelf? Those are cheap... Just make sure the shelf is rated for the full weight of the server.
@@ArtofServer Look like the server is powering on while you are still working on it. Or are you using Virtual machine. If you could show the connection at the back it might help.
You need to investigate why the system cannot find your boot device. Start with the system menu and examine the boot devices configured and their order. Then look at any driver controller's boot configuration.
You used to be able to update with the lifecycle controller, but because these are so old and EOL, the servers that provide the updates no longer have those updates. So, today, you'll have to boot some OS to run the updates.

Depends on the controller. If you use the SAS6/iR with IT mode firmware, you can use any size SAS HDD available today, but only up to 2TB SATA HDDs. If you use the H200 (and sacrifice the one PCIe slot), you can use any size SAS or SATA HDDs available today.

Bad news is... one bay is running Windows server, the other 3 are only 2tb drives for now.... in theory i should be able to swap 1 of the 2tbs out for larger... have the raid array rebuild on that drive then continue to swap rebuild... swap rebuild? or is there some fancy thing i need to do?
The board you are asking about is probably the PDB as described. If you don't have the redundant hot swap psu setup, then you don't have a PDB; just a normal single PSU.

Congrats on the new server. No, I just have jnlp file associated with javaws and it launches automatically.
@@Ackrozinski You followed my 2 videos to fix Java for iDRAC and it didn't work?
@@ArtofServer Yes. There seems to be new security in Java 8, 151 for both the PC and Mac, where if you modify out RC4, as you suggest, one still ends up with an error re: jar file doesn't contain the permissions to complete the web start, and it fails. Very frustrating.
I may have to check that out when I upgrade java.
Did you ever figure out your issues with BMC updates?
I am also unable to update My R410 BMC firmware.
Attempting to use ipmitool to set fan speed controls, but not able to communicate.
Great video series, thanks.
No, i just updated the iDRAC only and that seems to take over. Thanks for watching!
Interesting. thanks for the update.
@@ArtofServer I did end up making a blog post about my learning process and thanks to a Redditor who reviewed it I've learned the absolute easiest and safest way of applying firmware updates. Check Dell's instruction video here -> ruclips.net/video/oESireoKiiA/видео.html
They provide complete "SUU" ISO images with all updates, which may be used from Linux, Windows or the LCM!
Great video! Do you know if there is an dell iso boot file with all the latest updates like the 12g and newer?
There used to be. But I don't think it's maintained anymore since the 11th gen is EOL.
Are you telneting in or RDP in? Could you show that in separates video. I think a lot people will like it. I am glue in your channel right now. Just got whole lot of DELL servers and try to start working on them. thanks.
Not sure what you are asking about? Are you asking about the idrac6 remote KVM application?
So after 4 years of having fun with the r410 I've changed my setup. Now the question: can I reset the idrac via its webgui? I haven't a vga monitor anymore 😬
use the racadm tool from the OS to reset it if you don't have direct console access.
Do you want as meany drivers updates as possible or only the necessary ones?
hello, where did you purchase your monitor/keyboard setup for your rack?
I often find used server rack gear from eBay. Word of caution though, if you buy a used KMM (keyboard monitor mouse) unit like I have, make sure it comes with the rails as they sometimes get split and are almost impossible to find the rails separately. Try to buy the KMM as a complete unit and make sure to ask the seller and verify it is complete.
I know it's been a while since you made this video, but is there something you can do if iDRAC6 doesn't pick up an IP address from DHCP?
make sure you get link on the idrac port. second to that, look into the 'racadm' tool, it has some command options related to the NIC that might help.
Good work. Well done.
Thank you 😊
Also, on the drac use 1.5A02 to get past the idrac the first time (especially if its never been updated 1.11-1.20 is rediculous to get out of) , if u need a copy send me an email & ill send u the update file.. (sorry guys i dont have the bandwidth to host it publicly but will pass it along to someone who can?)
I might be able to host it...
Do the Dell 3930 rack workstation !
If only Dell would notice me and have their PR/Markting department send me stuff? LOL
While this guide is helpful and makes alot of sense, Im having a hard time getting CentOS on a bootable OS like you have. Do you have a guide on how this has been done as it seems to have been glossed over
Actually, I do: ruclips.net/video/laC7nsY1SyM/видео.html
@@ArtofServer you are honestly helping in the best way
I was thinking of getting one of these this for my personal workstation. I'm not much of a gamer these days, but I always have friends online who ask me to join them on games. Anyway, you said "PCI" slot and video cards usually use PCIe, so I'm not able to install any kind of video card. Oh well, I guess I have to give my friends the "BAD" news... lol (really, this saved me from the trouble, thank you)
Edit: oh crap, I saw this on Dell's pdf:
1 x PCIe x16 (True x16, Gen2);full height, half length
I really wanted to give them the "bad" news! lol
I used the term "PCI" as synonymous to "PCIe" as most systems these days no longer have legacy PCI...
2:30 *nervously closes phone* ... oh. Okay 🤣🤣
Do you have the details somewhere of your USB drive setup? I've had issues with mounting and getting the .bin files to execute without error.
The CentOS7 bootable USB drive was setup like I showed in this video: ruclips.net/video/laC7nsY1SyM/видео.html (except the video is CentOS 8, but the process is the same).
Thanks for your video
But I face stranger case , in T140 after I changed mode from bios from ahci to raid mod , when I boot windows , I can't see any hard dsik or SSD in install windows no located ,
I try other way , I did all steps from lifecycle into deploy windows . And after finsh all , when you boot , you will see now dive in windows box setup
If you have any solution plz replay
hopefully someone on my channel can help you, but I don't know much about Windows. :-(
With the repository manager: This is where I had to setup the repository on an ftp and configure the lifecycle controller to connect to it like it was the actual dell ftp because the iso or the other option wasn't working.
The ISO option was working for me, just the DRM didn't recognize the BMC firmware update at all... so it didn't include it in the bootable ISO i made with it.
any option for a low profile gt 1030?
If you use the integrated SAS controller, you can reserve the PCIe slot for that GPU. See Part 2 of this series about the storage controller options.
Doh! I can't believe I didn't think of using a shelf. That will work prefectly. Thanks!
Can I install Windows Server 2019 on this machine?
I don't know. I haven't used Windows Server in many years. You will have to try it out and see.
@@ArtofServer Ok, thanks. I'll try it.
Hello, may i ask how do you add/create all the BIOS firmware upgrade into a bootable USB?
It's just USB drive with a full installation of FreeDOS and folders of tools.
@@ArtofServer please make a video about how you do that
I try to figure how you have multiple screen while it is loading or restarting?
What do you mean?
@@ArtofServer Look like the server is powering on while you are still working on it. Or are you using Virtual machine. If you could show the connection at the back it might help.
Im interested in updating my r410 bios, firmware, etc, but what is new with these updates?
you should read the release notes for those updates to find out.
Hi.. i am facing No boot device available issue in Dell R320. Please help to resolve
You need to investigate why the system cannot find your boot device. Start with the system menu and examine the boot devices configured and their order. Then look at any driver controller's boot configuration.
Do you have any idea if it's possible to update bios at the Bios with a usb stick? or do i need to boot into an os like windows to run the program?
You used to be able to update with the lifecycle controller, but because these are so old and EOL, the servers that provide the updates no longer have those updates. So, today, you'll have to boot some OS to run the updates.
When i go to use launch virtual console it fails im using windows tho i added an exception in java for the out dated certificate otherwise it wouldnt even let me attempt to launch the virtual console but now it wont connect
You might need to watch my video on fixing Java security settings:

When I was updating the BMC on my R410, I had to update to 1.33 first then to 1.54 if the firmware is lower otherwise it would error out every single time. After that I was able to update it to 1.92 no problem. Hopefully this helps somebody if they're having the same problem.
Where did you download the older intermediate updates?
@@ArtofServer Dell had a download site specifically for just Ctrl+F and search the model and the DUP you needed but they've retired it and redirects to product support immediately. I've found them on my server and are willing to share them if needed.
What is the max capacity of 3.5inch HDD and Normal 7200rpm will work on this server?
Depends on the controller. If you use the SAS6/iR with IT mode firmware, you can use any size SAS HDD available today, but only up to 2TB SATA HDDs. If you use the H200 (and sacrifice the one PCIe slot), you can use any size SAS or SATA HDDs available today.
What size of HDD can be put and what maximum storage?
I answer that in detail in Part 2 of this series here: ruclips.net/video/YUbyUWpnNhw/видео.html
I have a question. Is it possible to swap the SAS backplate for a sata one?
There's no need to do that. SAS backplanes support SATA devices too.
@@ArtofServer nother question or two, is that board the fans by the powersupply separate or part of the PSU unit my 410 doesnt have the redundant PSUs? good news is my r410 is up and running...
How would you update drivers on a r410 that is a ESXI host?
Do you mean the BIOS and firmware?
Art of Server yes
im doing this now and i dont have an option for dedicated under nic selection can anyone help?
You are probably missing the idrac enterprise module.
Oh I got, 1 of those.
Are you available to support my team with the default setting? I will cover your time
Support you for what? Please elaborate? Did you order something from my store?
@ArtofServer l didn't order anything from your store but I have used R410 server and the default settings isn't working ( New IP is not Generated). I followed all the steps on your clip. I need your help on this and if something is required to be installed on it, I will buy.
It’s a very painful process to update these servers. Too painful honestly.
yeah, I agree...
i have the T 410 and is the worst and slowest server ive ever had, very disPPOINTED
Depends on what you're doing and for what purpose you want to use the server. You can consider upgrading the CPUs, or get a more modern server. I don't recommend 11th gen servers if your needs are compute intensive. These are fine for running a simple file server, or other light duty.
@@ArtofServer i just wanted to use for a freenas or storage, so i got it fairly cheap mostly saved on shipping since im in florida. I updated bios only because there was no idrac or anything else included. It has 5502's in it so i put 5645's in. Replace the what i call the server version of a dell perc 6/i with an adaptec 3805. It still was so god awful slow with booting, etc that even an ssd did little or no improvement so i chalked it all up to my ignorance or a weak board.
