    Transcript:
I've been noticing that my driveway is in pretty rough shape, there are spots like this that are badly eroded, cracks pretty much everywhere and you know with winter coming on, it's just going to get worse. Water will enter places like this, freeze and expand and by next spring, I'm going to have a real mess here. So I want to do something about it now.
Sealing a driveway is a job that at first I thought I'd have a professional come in and do but then I came across a relatively new product from Dupont that I think is going to be easy enough to apply that I believe I'll do it myself
Before anything can go on my driveway some things have to come off; dirt and debris, algae and weeds.
I'll start with the weeds. I'm always amazed at how well these guys can do in a pavement crack.
Next I loosen the debris that's collected in the wider cracks using a wire brush.
Then it's time for the big sweep. Now I could use a broom, but my leaf blower will do a great job of cleaning out the cracks, then clearing everything off the surface quickly.
To get rid of the algae, I pour a gallon of household bleach into four gallons of water, dip a scrub brush in the solution and apply the bleach and water mixture. A heavy scrubbing is really not necessary here, I'd rather let the chemicals do the work. I let the solution set for about 10 minutes, then rinse with fresh water. Well, I've got the hose out. I use the nozzle to flush out any material in the cracks that the blower left behind.
The final cleaning I do with a pressure washer, you might consider this option, but this machine does a terrific job of removing dirt and the way I see it, The cleaner, the surface, the better anything I put on top will stick.
Well, the surface is clean and the algae is gone, but before I can put any kind of sealer on this driveway, I'm going to have to deal with these damaged areas. The erosion right here and all of those cracks,
Narrower cracks, up to a half inch wide or so can be most easily filled using a liquid elastomeric filler like this one. I like to cut the tapered nozzle about a quarter inch wide. The idea here is to move backward, away from the tip, slightly overfilling the crack. You may have to speed up or slow down, depending on how deep or wide the crack becomes. Once the filler is in place I like to take a two inch putty knife and flatten the bead, spreading the material over the adjacent surface.
The eroded areas need to be filled using a paste like trowel grade filler. I find that it's easier and less messy to use a wide putty knife to remove the material from the bucket and distribute it on the surface. Then I switched to a trowel to smooth the filler and blend it at the edges. The trowel grade filler also works well on sunken in areas like this and larger cracks up to one inch wide.
No, I'm not trying to emulate a Jackson Pollock painting, I'm applying a bonding agent and sealer on top of what had been an oil stain. I washed the surface area first with a degreaser, now I'm spreading the sealer evenly over the surface. It will dry clear.
Now, this is the sealer or resurfacing that I'm going to be using today, it's by Dupont and it's asphalt with polymers added. Now that combination will ensure that it sticks well to the old surface, it remains flexible, reducing the likelihood of cracking, resistant to the ultraviolet sun rays and it will also be highly resistant to gas and oil spills. On top of that, it has sand added to it. That will give me better traction here on the driveway.
The resurfacer needs to be mixed thoroughly before using. Now I could do this by hand, but a paddle mixer and a cordless electric drill is much faster, easier and less messy. My first application tool will be a four inch wide paint brush. With this, I'll apply the material around the edge of the driveway, being careful to keep it off the cobblestone border.
Now here is where a second person helps a lot. Teela Keller, a friend of mine, has agreed to lend me a hand on this next phase. She's pouring the resurfacer on the driveway ahead of me while I follow behind with a wide squeegee spreading it out evenly. Now, there is definitely a technique here. The idea is to move in a continuous back and forth pattern, always working with a wet edge.

    Here are the quick notes:
    1. Blow
    2. Pressure wash
    3. Use Elasto meric Crack Filler for all cracks less than a half inch. Then use a 2” putty knife.
    4. Bigger ones, trowel grade crack filler.
    5. Use premium grade driveway resurfacer. Use a paddle mixer to mix it up.
    6. Paint the sides with a small brush.
    7. With two people, have someone pour it with a trail person with a gigantic squeegee.
    8. Go to church in your khakis.

      3. Use trowel grade crack filler for large cracks.
      4. Pour driveway re-surfacer on and use giant squeegee to smooth it out.

I am about to have 30 plus year old, extensively cracked driveway paved with 2 inches of asphalt and compacted to 1 1/2 ". There are no holes. Just almost total cris crossed cracks. Paving companies say it needs to be removed and rebuilt totally from dirt thru new compacted rock then new asphalt. It is difficult for me to accept all of that since, though covered like a jigsaw puzzle in extensive cracking, since pieces are locked in tightly and not coming out, and not leaving holes, I can't see why new compacted high quality paving won't create a new, long-term asphalt driveway.

I've been doing this on my driveway for the past 30 years, in July. It lasts an average of two to three years. The product I use is from a Canadian manufacturer(we got lots of asphalt bituman chemical companies) The summer sun helps warm up the asphalt so the new coating bonds better. Costs about $40 cad from the local hardware store. Worth it.

But then a neighbor was going from gravel to blacktop and i got an estimate assuming the guy was already basically here with his equipment. Omfg a 30' x 18' will cost about $18k. Looks like i will be going back to the store again.

The spray can keep the asphalt from adhering well. Weeds should die from lack of sunlight. That comes from cleaning the cracks and holes REALLY REALLY well.

Ron, you are definitely the man. My only questions is, would you happen to have an updated picture of the driveway since you've resurfaced it? I'd love to see how it's holding up since the make-over. Thanks Ron!

    • @stevebabiak6997

Good question. The normal asphalt only products are rated for three years of service from ones I have seen; there are some that claim longer and shorter. I have found that the longevity is greatly affected by how many snowfalls come in the winter, when I use a manual push shovel that repeatedly scrapes the surface.
I would hope this product holds up at least as well.

John Syrmis If you found out, let me know. My driveway is about that size and I need to do the same. I have quite a few potholes though so I'll have a lot more prep work to do. Also, how well does it hold up? I live in Indianapolis where the weather is horrible in the winter.

My driveway is 2 cars wide, and about 40ft long. I’ve always ended up using 3 pails of sealer.

    • @RWT2777
      @RWT2777 5 лет назад +5

There's a simple graph on the side of the buckets of sealant that recommend how many 5 gallon buckets based on square footage. Measure your driveway LxW and you'll get your sq. footage. My driveway is 780 ft. long x 10ft. long for 7800 sq. ft. The product I'm going to use (item #808010 at Costco) says 1 bucket covers 250-350 sq. ft. I'm assuming that depends on how many coats you want to put on. Likely if you want a more perfected driveway you're going to do at least 2 coats. But either way, divide 7800 by 250 and you'll get that at the very least I need approximately 31 buckets. They're $19.99 each - so my minimal cost will be $620.
I'd say that the sq. footage estimate on the bucket is likely the same no matter the actual product brand you choose to use.

Rwt2777 you are spot on with your information but there's a difference in grades and also how far they will stretch and if you get a paint roller a large one I think they have a 18 inch available and then with some down pressure and pulling you tend to get an extra 50 to 100 sq ft if its latex you get a lil extra if its filler seal not so much lol and yup that flat blade squeegee is awesome for that job but he can't really put down pressure and drag any extra away that gator skin gear is what I wanna see dry and a year later
