  • Black Desert Online is a sandbox style massively multiplayer role playing game from Korean developer Pearl Abyss. Originally released in Korea in 2014, Black Desert was recently released in the West (NA/EU) in March 2016 through publisher Daum Games. Instead of a subscription fee, the game features a buy to play option and a cosmetic real money cash shop specific to the Western release, similar to Guild Wars 2.
With 8 distinct playable classes (including Knight, Ranger, Berserker, Sorceress, Valkyrie, Tamer, Wizard and Witch) Black Desert features incredibly in-depth customization options which allow you to tweak and refine every detail of your character. Although this is somewhat hindered by locked preset races and genders (determined by your class choice) the shear number of options is more than enough to create a truly unique avatar.
Black Desert focuses on a more action orientated combat style, which relies on combinations of button presses over a traditional MMO hot bar. Native controller support is also available and makes the combat feel more like a fighting game than an MMO. Each class comes with a huge unique skill tree, allowing for diverse and distinct character builds and different combinations of abilities.
There is so much to do within the expansive world and the only limits are the ones you set for yourself. Whilst there is a story to follow and monsters to slay, the sandbox style gameplay allows players the freedom to truly explore and pursue any and all tasks they wish, all at their own pace. Unlike more traditional MMOs, there is no set endgame; no dungeons, no raids, just world bosses, co-operative play and PVP.
As well as general combat and exploration, players may invest their time in a number of other tasks, including a largely player driven economy. Setting up trade routes and playing the market is essential for commercial success if you'd like to be a merchant, as well as protecting your business and acquiring better transport. Gathering and crafting vocations are substantive, rewarding and worthwhile; you can be a fully fledged farmer rather than a generic hero who happens to pick a few herbs every now and then. Your character's focus and ambitions are central and it is up to you which goals you accomplish. Many tasks, such as setting up trade routes, require investment and Contribution Points, an innovative new system that allows for complete control and implementation of your favored play style.
Player characters can take advantage of a Knowledge database which determines how effective they are at certain tasks. Killing enemies will allow you to learn about their strengths and weaknesses, whilst gathering materials, discovering new locations and talking to NPCs will open up new learning opportunities and quests through the Conversation system.
There's a lot to learn about and do in Black Desert and it's certainly not for the faint of heart. It can be a little intimidating at first, especially for players new to the genre. Although with a little patience, the deep mechanics of the game and the world will eventually become second nature as your adventures through the world continue. With little to no obligation, it's easy to play and learn at your own pace.
