  • Almost EVERYONE suffering from Art-Block complains about their motivation - But there's something HUGE they are missing. I believe many people are looking at the wrong sources of motivation to move forward and get out of their artblock.
This is the first in a 3 part series where I will speak on the different points that I believe fuel the majority of Artblock that artists experience today.

I dont just have art block, i feel like I have life block these days.
When I was younger I used to pick up a pen and paper or a game or a book and just do it for hours and hours. Nowadays doing literally anything feels like pain and i dont feel like i enjoy doing anything in life anymore.
I have an internal desire to draw or do something else but as soon as i start doing it i really feel like theres a giant rock on my gut pushing me down.

From my experience, working a little bit every day is like adding an XP multiplier. much better to work for 25 mins every day for a week than 7 hours crammed in 1 day hopped up on energy drinks at 2am for example. We tend to drastically overestimate what we can do in a day and drastically underestimate what we can do in a week/month/year. Just little bits can do wonders. All or nothing mindsets where if you don't work 15 hours in a day it was a waste are poison that I struggled with a lot.

having smaller groups of art friends, like a small discord channel, is a really good idea. Ive been doing that myself - bc otherwise the largest issue is having all these ways of getting motivation but you still need motivation to do these ideas haha , usually something motivational just randomly creeps up but not when you're hanging out in a discord channel and you have friends who meet up in vc on a specific day its very wholesome and even if I dont feel up to drawing on that day usually while im talking and offering crit and watching people draw i end up doing a little doodle or something

You learn so MUCH with drawing of muscle and bones : value, light, form and it's so much easier to put clothes on character without getting weird results.
And in top of that, there is few people who have courage to learn it, but the reward is so HUGE that you can create masterpiece way more easily...

I wouldn't necessarily consider mine as an art block, but more of a burnout. Stress from school works and insomnia are the main factors that makes me don't wanna do anything in ny free time. I used to draw during my free time, but school work requires me to even do homeworks on weekends. So after finishing it, I'd get so tired that I'd spent the whole day sleeping and not draw at all.
Also to answer the question, I'd love to master efficiency. Uh, like I'd give myself 5 hours to draw and maybe I'll finish a piece. Given that my school works are really tough, I'd love to use my time as efficient as possible and create a piece within a limited amount of time. My drawings usually take weeks to finish. Plus I also wait for the "drive" to kick in rather than force myself to actually draw something. Am I even making sense? Lmao. My apologies, it's 1am here. Talk about insomnia amirite? Anyway, I almost used this as my diary so I'll head to bed for now and maybe look back at what I wrote tomorrow. Love y'all 💖

Honestly internal motivation truly is the most important thing when it comes to art. I've picked up drawing again after a long pause about two and a half months ago and my motivators have changed from external ones to all internal ones, and it has made such a difference. Now suddenly I WANT to draw every day and don't have to force myself, I crave it whenever I don't have a pencil in my hand. And whenever I feel frustrated (almost every day, at some point), it's fine. Because I know that even if I "failed" at something, I did so working towards my goal and progressing further!

I plan to look for your other videos.

I've been suffering from art block on and off for the past 3 years since graduating college. I've been in the longest period of struggle and frustration since.. I would say August. I've done a few pieces here and there, but many of my projects and a few commissions for friends have been left unfinished. The fear of failure and feeling of inadequacy has really kept its grip on me to where I won't even try, or I stop drawing after about 15 minutes of sketching that because I feel like I'd forgotten how to even draw.
There's nothing I want more than to get out of this hole I seem to have dug myself so deeply into, to get back my motivation and passion for creating.

Dude, this video really touched me. I've been aspiring to take my art to Pro level for a few years now. Just leaving college, I'm pressuring myself way too much to become a high level artist, got me real burnt out real fast. From this video, it kinda grounded me, and now I feel ready to take the appropriate steps to become more successful in the art field. Thanks for your help bro!

Perspective, it contains everything you need, if you can draw a block (haha) or blocks in perspective, you can draw nearly everything on top of that. After that, values.
    huh.... Shapes and values.

Thank you so much for this. My motivation for painting oils has been gone for a while. The joyful way to do it is not longer there. The reason is fear to do not finding a good subject/feeling. Or maybe is my brain picking up somebody else’s thoughts. Thank you one more time for giving me something to think about it. 🙏🏾☺️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Love the green! Hahaha! And if I could beat an artblock it'd be this internal desire to place technical skills on a pedestal, when I can feel more free to enjoy myself. Feels like a lot of the joy that you spoke about goes out the window when I start comparing myself to all the masters out there!

I think I would choose to be able to describe emotions with my art... it was a good exercise to think of only one skill, it really made me narrow it down. At first I didn't think I could choose one, but I somehow figured out my answer anyway. As for motivation I am highly inner motivated and it really struck me when you mentioned that suffering can lead to inner motivation growing stronger. I have wondered why some couldn't keep as motivated as I am and why I couldn't really help them feel it more from within - I guess that's because they are more outwardly motivated. Also, I am so often guilty of doodling and hoping it turns out amazing... but just a while ago I decided to pull myself together and work more seriously on a piece again ^_^ thanks for a great video, looking forward to the next!

The way I think about motivation is that it is like a speed booster in mario kart or any other racing game. It can be extremely vital in getting you to the finish line. You can take shortcuts, pass checkpoints, or make jumps impossible to do without it, but it will ultimately run out. It is inherently an inconsistent source of energy, so reliance on it will only lead to large swaths of little progress and overall disappointment. "Internal motivation" is like the engine of your car. It is the source of progress. It can run faster or slower at times, but it is always running. Without it, you wouldn't be able to make any progress at all. It might need some maintenance here and there, but the better you take care of it, the faster and further you'll be able to go. I refer to that internal motivator as "drive".
Becoming a successful artist, or quite frankly, mastering any skill requires you to hone your drive so that you can make consistent and efficient progress and utilize those bursts of motivation to the best of your ability.

I deleted Instagram and it's so great.
I've gone through phases of having motivation to post my own art (stopped looking for likes a long time ago because I knew I won't get any anyway...) I really enjoyed going through my feed everyday and watching what the few people I followed do, I love their stuff and it inspired me. BUT I haven't noticed how much it effects and influences me.
I still feel like a looser and am afraid of my future but I created so much more art and stuff that comes from in ME.
That's so much for fullfilling than watching other peoples stuff and thinking that I have to do the same or simular.
I can hear my own voice so much clearer now.
Maybe I come back to instagram someday but at that time I have no desire to. Instagram is really not a platform that appreciates artists and helps them to strive...
