Awesome. 1 Reflect and identify what is affecting your mental state. 2 Don’t just worry, turn your worries into practicable solutions. 3 Put yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things. 4 Get outside, get fresh air, get exercise and explore new spaces. 6 Push through it, even when it hurts. 7 Make small changes to your environment that can encourage creativity. Love this! Just recently come out of art block myself and looking back, these are all things I did without realising. Thank you, I hope this helps someone who’s struggling to come out of it!

Oh, and one more thing I found helpful: embrace silliness. Do something silly, make something silly, laugh at yourself, get out of the proud headspace that doesn’t like making mistakes or, dare I say it, failing. It’s so much better for creativity. Go play pretend with some children. They never need telling how to be creative.

Loved this video!! It reminded me of a quote from Kiki’s Delivery Service: “Stop trying. Take long walks. Look at scenery. Doze off at noon. Don’t even think about flying. And then, pretty soon, you’ll be flying again.” Sometimes we just need to go outside and do something a little different to fill our creative cup. 💛
Btw, I used your code for Squarespace!! Finally taking the plunge. 💪
(Also, I love your olive green jacket!! Super cute)

ive had art block for about 1 1/2 years now. i just keep trying to get around it from different angles, like thumbnails, blind drawings (so fun), studying stills from my favorite shows. most importantly doing these things with NO judgement. ❤

Feeling stuck with imposter syndrome as a digital artist myself - I'd say I'm still a beginner and while I have posted some of my art, I just feel like it isn't good enough. Those feelings often will stop me mid-way through a project where I'll abandon it. While this is part of the journey, it's not a matter of if I'll overcome, but when (as you said). Thanks for being open and sharing!

I have a quote I'm 90% sure I heard from one of your videos on a stickynote I keep by my desk at my eyeline-- it reads, "Thinking about stuff is not doing stuff." That's a quote that has helped me immensely, as both someone with really bad anxiety (see: zoloft prescription LOL), and someone finishing up their illustration Bachelor's. That quote for sure helped me through art block, or art paralysis, or even just being overwhelmed at life and not being able to make art. And I just kept thinking of it while watching this video!
I think that silversmithing stuff is super cool! And I legit got emotional looking at your photos and videos from the trip you talked about at the end hahaha-- so pretty and different and vibrant and inspiring!! And kitty will never lower the quality of a video!!!

You are so great at sharing your point of view and helping others to overcome the same challenges you face. So I hope you don't worry too much about views/likes, cause there are so many more people out there who will love your content but just haven't seen it yet. This is crazy that you just posted this video. Cuz that's all i wqs thinking about today. I Don't have an art block but ive been working non stop on my artbussiness for the past years and 'going out' is nothing I even think about anymore, even tho I know I need to connect (&network) with people and LIVE LIFE to get energy and inspiration. I feel sometimes like im missing out by building my dream especially when things arent going as well in the business and you're still in the 'getting there' phase. Thank you for talking about these things. Love your channel and im starting one this week too actually and you've been a HUGE motivation. Sending love from germany 🖤 (PS I never commented on a vid before lol)

I've been working from home as an artist for about a decade now and I'm extremely introverted. I found getting a dog and being forced to take him out for a few hours a day improved my life a lot. I got exercise, other dog owners and random people would talk to me which was the limited and small dose socializing I prefer and it gave me a routine. I used to work at all hours but now I get up in the morning to go out with my dog and I can't break that routine.

One thing that came up in my art journey this year was my art block was triggered by burnout. Sometimes you really just have to walk away and take a minute for YOU and it seems to always lead you back to creativity. I learned personally I am not a "push through it" artist, I need to go with the flow and the ideas need to "come to me" if that makes sense. Sometimes I really just need to ground and go back to my roots, which would lead me to go on a hike like you did! It also helped me on the small business end of my burnout to go to local flea markets and small business vending events in general to just get inspired that I can actually make it in this art world. Your video had so many great tips! I totally agree :))

Thank you for honestly sharing how you have gone through this creative block, this is the part that we least often show on the internet, a more vulnerable content that shows what we feel and go through in life, and in this case, art. I would love for you to share more of this content, about what you have gone through and suffered and overcome as an artist because that encourages us to continue persevering on this path of art :) and to recognize that we all go through the same thing even if we don't want to show it. I wish you much encouragement Kelsey!

Thank you for sharing your journey. I actually found your RUclipss BECAUSE I was going through art block the last few weeks. I’ve been watching them all and am now obsessing about doing my own channel. I agree with the ‘do something else’ approach. Art is in my blood as I’m sure it’s in yours. It will always find its way back to you. May be a different form (like your necklace) but at the heart of it all, you’re a creative. Be kind to yourself. Thank you for being real. ❤

  • @otherworldlyfiction

What I’ve noticed is how much one area of my life can affect another. I’m a writer, but still take inspiration from this channel as writing is its own form of art. However, I’ve also been doing pet sitting to earn money, and I’ve been going through a dry spell finding clients. The insecurity and frustration I’ve been feeling, I think, have affected my overall mood, which in turn affects my confidence in other things, like writing. Your tip to think about why I’m feeling blocked made me realize that. I also agree with your other point that I need to get outside more. As an introvert, that’s also something I forget.

I’ve been experiencing this myself, was listening back to the audio for my latest video and you can hear my exhaustion and demotivation in my voice- having a full time job and trying to build the foundation for an art career at the same time is really hard, but as much as it’s frustrating to feel burnt out when I just want to be moving forward, I’ve definitely gotten better and giving myself some grace and time to rest… I totally relate to what you said about getting out of your comfort zone too! I’m also very introverted but I’ve found that going out and doing things on my own that I’d normally do with friends is actually quite freeing and affirming

I've been a life long animator, and I learned with 2D, learned 3D and motion capture workflows with work and my 2D work suffered enormously for years. I started doing stop motion animation and I literally fell in love with animation all over again. New challenges, new skills to learn, applying old skills, and even just combining other tactile hobbies with animation gave me a lot more gas in the tank after nearly 15ish years of game dev work.
I enjoy stop motion a lot, and similar to your silver smithing I dove into metal work a few years ago cause there was a new part of my brain and my hands that were just happy to have something to directly connect new skills with artistic endeavors.
Also living life and outdoors and not staying inside exclusively is extremely good advice ^__^

I think there is a bit of an economic slump for artists and content creators right now. I'm not really sure what's going on but I also work as a full time artist and content creator and my revenue is like half right now. I thought I was in good place financially but now I'm living paycheck to paycheck, my readers are down(I make comics) and I'm starting to second guess doing art for a living. This has happened before but this slump just feels different. I was hoping things will pick up for spring/summer but I have a feeling it's not going to. I feel like I'm working harder and revenue is just going down a little each month.

it sucks getting to the park (where I can finally see green stuff) but I guess we all can't be fortunate enough to live in these mythical walkable cities, lol
Imposter syndrome mhmmmm- my advice is kinda for you is kinda simple but, art is all about YOUR process! so fuck the system, be a rebel, paint with your elbows and eyebrows, w/e makes you express yourself to what you'd like to communicate THAT is your art- this isn't a science so be freeeeeeeeeee !!

I've find too, that going outside and prioritizing physical experiences was beneficial. But I'm just wondering if you or anyone experiences guilt while doing something that isn't your art/or other aspect of art work? If so how do you deal with them? Thanks a lot Kelsey for sharing your experience, it helps a lot to know that everyone experiences art blocks:)

Whenever I have imposter syndrome, I step away from my painting and I go play my guitar or read manga or binge watch anime or read novels. By stepping away and being gentle with myself, I don’t feel guilty about not drawing and painting everyday. I know that time away to reflect on all the push and churn I was doing for my art will actually be beneficial for future work. Time, patience and getting back to the reason why I create art in the first place is good for the soul. Creating Art is a way of enjoying personal time with myself after a long day at work and it’s also a form of connection with others who enjoy what I do. Hang in there. You are amazing and a benefit to us all.
