Hi! Sorry I'm terribly late D:. To record I use this app on my phone called "Smule sing", there are a lot of instrumentals that you can't find on youtube :D and it's really good to record your voice. When I use smule I use my apple earphones to record (do you know the little mic that every earphone has? :D). Actually it turns out to be pretty good :D I hope I answered to your question, if you have more please feel free to ask

It's not stupid at all :D I understand! Unfortunately I had the same problem as yours but I don't know what other ways you could record a good quality cover ... There are a lot of hacked softwares but i don't know how it works sorry >-
