Nice of you to throw a couple of Australian prog groups in there. Rainbow Theater is another good Australian progressive group. There's another Australian group called Airlord but they have an overwhelming amount of keyboards.
Listen to their first 3 albums from 1974 and 1975. They're definitely progressive. Ignore the hits off of the next 2 and those are also progressive. After that, not so much.
Magnum Opus, Mysteries and Mayhem,, Journey from Mariabronn, Lamplight Symphony, Song for America, The Spider, , The Pinnacle, Recently the Voyage of 8:18 (relatively new album). The Song the River sang (YT their official video), Apercu, Incumudro-Hymn to the Atman. Byzantium are a few. No band on the planet can cover most of their prog work, Magnum Opus is over 8 minutes of insanity and complex time signatures that I don't think even ELP could master. Carry On, Point of Know Return and Dust in the Wind over shadowed most of their work.
Oh i sure do. Complex lyrical themes, musically they were very adventurous with a lot of syncopation going on and odd time signatures. They were very prog.
Great list! It has a nice mix of classic bands and some less common choices. It's interesting to see "Casa das Máquinas" in there. 👍 Thanks for commenting!
Progressive rock in its infancy and peak years were all British and European bands, although some good golden Era progressive rock came from South America and other Non-European countries but North America tried but the bands were too uh not progressive rock idk they just didn't like get it right.

PFM and VDGG for sure near the top. But there are also quite a few other Italians that could make the list... Banco del Mutuo Soccorso? Osanna? Area? Le Orme? Museo Rosenbach?
Totally agreed, even though there some bands I've never heard of and others I know but never listened to them. I'm a big fan of Rush, Genesis, Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer (and a fan of Kansas, even though I listen to a few songs).
The problem with the excellent band Pink Floyd is, are they actually a prog band? I tend to list either Yes or Genesis at the top but lean towards Genesis. I think Genesis may be tops with superior lyrics and story telling over Yes's technical superiority.
Thanks for your comment. But what would be the criteria that would disqualify Pink Floyd as a Progressive Rock band, a genre that almost unanimously recognizes as belonging to them. In your opinion, which 10 bands should be on this list? We will make a reissue based on our subscribers and you can contribute.
@@BackingTrackCenter I may be able to make a case that Pink Floyd should be categorized differently, however I could be easily swayed either way. Great band no matter what. If you google top Psychedelic bands you will find Pink Floyd at the top every time. Are they Psychedelic or Prog? Growing up in the late 70's, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and the little known band, Audience were in my fav rotation. If I were to rank them for me personally without kicking out Floyd for the Prog or not, then Genesis is way out front as I became a life long addict of their music. Then Audience because i return to that album a lot, even now (House on the Hill) and also Lunch became a fav in a smaller way later. Jethro Tull is third for me because I still play their songs a lot and can play them for a general audience as they are always positive and fun. Then Pink Floyd, though I never listen to them anymore -I hate to say it but i think they serve the teenage to early 20 audience better with their anti-establishment dark tunes. YES would be 4th, though I rarely play them. They are a wow instrumental talented band but they don't give me the escapism I get from sitting through a Genesis song. Sometimes they do a little too much noodling away where I get kinda bored, I need a bit of "story" to the music. Back to Pink Floyd...not prog? Which Prog band is trippy? None that I can think of -except Pink Floyd are trippy. On side two of the Lamb, Genesis tried trippy once -i skip that price every time -it just doesn't fit for me and Pink Floyd does that trippy stuff so much better. I have rambled enough. Open to others opinion on this though.
Great explanation on the subject, we were very pleased with your answer and the reasons behind it. The subject of Pink Floyd really gives a lot to talk about at this point. Welcome to our channel.
Eloy is definitely an amazing band that has made significant contributions to progressive rock, especially with albums like "Ocean" and "Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes". They have a unique and atmospheric approach that sets them apart in the progressive rock scene. What's your favorite Eloy song?

@@BackingTrackCenter thank you! I wanted to include Hawkwind but I'm not sure if they are full prog since they have lots of psych and space rock influences. But I suppose the same can be said of Pink Floyd haha
You’re welcome! Hawkwind is indeed a fascinating mix of prog, psych, and space rock, which makes them a bit eclectic. Their experimental approach shares some similarities with Pink Floyd, blending various influences. It’s always interesting to see how these genres intersect!
Genesis might be up there. Mind you, if you included solo efforts, then Genesis would likely blow all bands out of the water. Steve Hackett alone has 21 solo albums. Never mind band offshoots: Mike and the Mechanics, GTR, Brand X, and then guest spots for Phil with Robert Plant, Tears for Fears, Clapton, Eno.
Here's another question to think about: Who had the most people in their band throughout the band's history? I'd guess either king crimson or yes based on my current knowledge
I'm always surprised that people don't go more for Marillion. Not keen on their incarnation after Fish left, but I still listen to live and studio recordings of their Fish-era material. Yes, they were certainly influenced by Genesis, but then all musicians are influenced by others.
Be real though, PF was way up there as far as progressive in 60s-70s. You may hv played them out over the years(I did, now I rarely listen) but still probably most popular and best known prog.
@@robcruz7813 PF has always been overrated, it’s like surface level prog with a bunch of annoying fans. A serious list would take other things into account

Van der Graaf Generator is an influential band in progressive rock, known for their experimental approach and deep lyrics. They might not be on the current list, but they could be considered in future editions. Do you have a favorite song of theirs?
@@BackingTrackCenter Thanks for the feedback. Too many songs to list for me but I would suggest listening to the albums Godbluff and Still Life for some suggestions.

I wore out my Triumvirat record, but never did I listen to it, and not think of how much they must have listened to ELP.
What about Captain Beyond.
Nice of you to throw a couple of Australian prog groups in there. Rainbow Theater is another good Australian progressive group. There's another Australian group called Airlord but they have an overwhelming amount of keyboards.
Dixie Dregs are great 🤘
I never considered Kansas to be prog.
They’re definitely a prog band, just listen to Carry On Wayward Son!

Your list is great. Thanks for commenting!

The era of the great Peter was amazing and then Phil's monster as a soloist and drummer devastated everything imaginable... that's how my head flew into the stratosphere! I recommend a great private concert from 1982 called Marquee that you probably already know but just in case I recommend it... look for the version that is recorded in very high fidelity, you just have to look for it on RUclips and get the one that is Hi-Fi. Not to mention another monumental concert called Chicago Live 78, it is something truly extraordinary, you also have to get the Hi-Fi version. Greetings from Buenos Aires
