How Good Is The Weeknd Really?

  • #TheWeeknd is back with some new music, this week I'm taking a look at #Sacrifice which seemed to be popular on RUclips recently. He says he is influenced by Michael Jackson which is of course fine and a great influence to have however...how close is this new song to sounding like another VERY popular Michael Jackson song? Am I just hearing things? Am I being too analytical? Apart from that I have a lot of other positive things to say about The Weeknd, so have a watch of the video first before commenting!

    My girl is a huge Weeknd fan as a result, I have listened to him a lot. We go to a lot of shows, I take her to shows like Sammy Hagar, Paul McCartney, and in October, Roger Waters. She has taken me to shows like Silk Sonic, Friends and Lovers show, and also The Weeknd. I think he’s a true artist and I love the concepts he puts into his work. Not a typical “pop” artists in my opinion. Is it my favorite cup of tea? No, but I can appreciate what he’s attempting. And, as per your video, he wears his influences on his sleeve, so to speak. As always, great commentary Mr. Hawkins. As someone who attempts the guitar, I find you an interesting and inspirational voice and one I respek haha. Cheers.

    I definitely think it has that Thriller vibe to it. Regarding your comments on whether he would be as good back in the day as today - I suppose he's working with the tools he has available to him today. If this was 40 years ago, he would be just as creative (perhaps a completely different sound due to different influences) but would use what was available back then. Would he have stood out when going against MJ, Prince, etc? Who knows!

    Justin my brother,
    I would implore you to take a deep dive into the Weeknd's Trilogy, it's his first 3 EPs combined and it's in a class of its own in my humble opinion. It's pretty slept on, and it has so many good tunes, he samples some beach house songs and old post punk songs, very good stuff and his voice has way more soul in it then all his new stuff.

    • @FrankyHawkins5
      @FrankyHawkins5 2 года назад

      I agree, his Ep’s were very much his own style and now that he’s on a huge label they shifted him to more generic Pop for the masses because this is nothing like House of balloons or Same old Song! I still look forward to his music but it’s really different from his earlier stuff.

    • @danielbutlermusic
      @danielbutlermusic 2 года назад

      @@FrankyHawkins5 I know it's so different but guess they didn't push him into it and it was his decision to become a giant pop star.

    I think you're being a bit too harsh ... the quietness of his voice is exactly what makes him appealing. There's a real sweetness to it. I can agree on the "inspiration" part, but having said that ... I don't know that the intention is trying to be Rod Temperton anymore than The Darkness is trying to be Queen. And I don't mean that in a churlish way! I think he brings something to pop that makes funk and r&b (the old school) a little more accessible. Is it groundbreaking? No. Not much is these days, because everything is an homage to something else ... but it IS enjoyable. My 2c.

    I kind of disagree. In an age where all the pop singers over sing, going for the ‘diva’ sound, I find the gentle singing of the weekend to be refreshing.
    I don’t think everything has to be rock all the time. I also don’t think all singers have to ‘belt it out’
    I like intimate vocals.

    • @GenevianFilms

    • @CarlyonProduction
      @CarlyonProduction 2 года назад +3

      @@GenevianFilms fair point. Personal preference I suppose. I wouldn’t call this under singing personally.
      For me the problem isn’t so much loud vs quiet, hard vs soft.
      For me there is just a lack of emotion and / or expression in most contemporary singers.
      It’s like they try to iron out all the quirks to the point where everything just sounds flat.
      Elliot smith used to sing softly, but there was so much emotion in his voice.

    • @AlisonSolo
      @AlisonSolo 2 года назад +4

      Finally someone with a similar opinion. I personally prefer to hear dynamics in a singing voice. All of this belting sounds like screaming to me. It’s great when it is used only when it is needed. Emotion is paramount, and you can do that without yelling every word in a song. I like to hear textures, soul and feelings. You can whisper a word and it can mean more than a thousand words belted. It isn’t to say that all belting is emotionless - certainly not. I just think it is overused and overrated. It doesn’t matter what the genre is - the same principle applies.

    • @ransbarger
      @ransbarger 2 года назад +1

      And then you have Billie Eilish and her whispering style. Just as annoying.

      @@ransbarger interesting. I don’t find that annoying at all! I find it a welcome break from the norm.
      I was getting so sick of the X factor ‘pop diva’ style singing. It’s so forced.
      Then Billie came along with no auto tune, not a ton of editing on her voice and some intimate singing! Love it.

    Hi Justin 👍 I love your vids. I absolutely appreciate your content. Keep it up 👍 But, I hate to say it, please find either a new jingle, or at least snazz it up a bit. You’re better than that. A little more melody, perhaps! I’m a fan of your music, but your intro is a bit squeamish to your fans! Anyhoo, other than that, keep going fella, you’re killing it. And I, for one, am loving it 👍

    Hearing this immediately as well. Influences suck when they're ripped off so blatantly.

    When Hawkins plays the chorus on the acoustic it sounds like 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps".

    Master Hawkins! You simply must review Australian garage rock band The Chats! It will be a barrel of laughs.

    Good call, mate. Philip Bailey hit the high notes for EWF live with so much power and consistency. Hard to match that! Same deal with MJ.

    As an American living on the West Coast, JHRA is nearly the totality of my exposure to British culture (Graeme and Mike Pullen, not withstanding). I dream that if I ever visit England, Mr. Hawkins is found to be the standard bearer for the nation as a whole.

    I recommend you listen to The Weeknd's DD (cover of Dirty Diana). Should get rid of any doubts around the dynamics of his voice :)

    The vocals suit the song cause it’s kind of a cruisy groove, like almost driving in your car and chilling

    I don't really agree on this one, Justin. That chord sequence is not synonymous to MJ, nor it can really be claimed as his. Of course the similarities are clear both in sound and overall vibe and I agree on the soft voice comments, but chords sequences always find ways to repeat themselves and, since that particular one is not an essential part in neither of the two compared songs, I think your judgement is a bit too harsh on this one!
    Cheers legend

    I play guitar but I don't have an ear for figuring out songs and notes as quickly as people like Justin do and it sucks. I've tried to learn that skill for 30+ years.
