A-ha! I See What Harry Styles Is Doing...

  • Are the sounds of The 80s making a comeback?! "As It Was" is the new single by the world's current pop hero Harry Styles. Here, I'm reacting to it as I as go and I think I've realised exactly why this song is currently so popular. It reminds me of another song that might be one of the greatest pop hits ever made. What do you think? What makes that 80s classic great and this song just...good? Is there something missing? Or am I being too harsh on Harry? Or am I being too kind?! Tell me, please, tell me.

      BTW, maybe you're too young to remember, way back in the 1960's there was a show called Opportunity Knocks, those cunts, cowell and lythgoe, 'borrowed' that idea, lock-stock-and-barrel, and made themselves very rich off an easliy pleased tv audience.

    Saw another comment further down, but I agree with the idea that Harry Styles will be remembered first and foremost as a performer.
    The songs are fun and I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with a pop artist simply making fun catchy music you can dance to with your friends. Does he reference his influences a bit too clearly? Maybe. But I don't mind listening to a track like Grapejuice and feeling that early solo McCartney vibe, or Canyon Moon with the Joni feel, or Kiwi's classic guitar-driven rock sound. I do think he puts enough of himself and modern flavor into them to keep it more interesting and away from being simple pastiche.
    But really I think where he does set himself apart is on stage - watching the way he brings a crowd to life and the energy he gives a performance (not to mention the killer musicians he surrounds himself with on stage and the more dynamic live musical arrangements) - I think that'll be his true legacy.
    (also some of the comments on here are just rancid. Attacking and belittling people for liking a musician and sharing their feelings about them? How pretentious and sad must you be)

    A-ha have a ton of fantastic songs. Take on Me is but one of them: Manhattan Skyline, Summer Moved On, Angel in the Snow, Out of Blue Comes Green, Analogue, Sun Always Shines on TV, Under the Makeup, and just way to many to mention spanning a few different genes actually. They are magnitudes of brilliance above those that use them as an influence . . . And that's with acknowledging Style's is a decent effort, ditto the Weeknd's Blinding Lights too.

There's lots of songs out there that sound similar to eachother, but when 'As it was' has blown up to the level that it has it just feels a bit awkward to me coz it's not a particularly game changing song, just easy to like I think and follows a lot of the same lines that 'Take on me' did.

    The first song I heard with that A-Ha drum beat and Synth melody was Blinding Lights then it seemed to be copied by Justin Bieber with Stay and then I heard Ed Sheeran do Shivers and Harry Styles releases As It Was, It surprises me that these pop stars could be so obvious with almost copying eachothers singles and it not worry them that it's seems really inauthentic, they all sound very similar to me.

      Yeah. It was "almost" artistically valid (factoring in a big slab of amnesia) when Blinding Lights came out, because it's a great tune. But when they all do an A-Ha track? Yawn. Why not just listen to Take On Me? It's better and will always be. Not many derivatives beat the original.

    It’s a bit of a trend at the moment to use the A-Ha aesthetic and I think you hit the nail in the head when you said it’s like they mathematically extracted what makes a great pop melody. You see the same thing in Dua Lipas Physical and of course Blinding Lights by the Weeknd. I always thought the production of all of these is very reminiscent of Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer. Either way I really like the song! (I have no musical talent, just ears 😊)

      My god you can literally mash up any songs lol I mean there's an excellent mash up of Taylor Swift's Cardigan and Harry Styles Falling they even mashed up the videos because they had similarities. Harry's came first if anyone was wondering. There are also mashups of Taylor Swift's Style and One Direction's Perfect, some great and some not so great. Harry is known for his influences from the past and if he does borrow a portion or if the influence is really strong he does credit them as writers. He's not stealing he's paying homage and directing his fans to their music.

Standing alone it's pretty good, sitting with the others on the album it's pretty damn great, not to say that it's better than the other songs but more all the songs supporting each other as a whole. The album and the sum of it's parts makes it all pretty fantastic!

  • @kirkwilson6229
    @kirkwilson6229 2 года назад +32

    Dude... you realize it's 100% that producers have mathematically analyzed wildly popular songs like that Wham! tune so they can replicate them without violating copyright, right? That's the main contribution Swedish Pop production (spearheaded by that Max douche who produced Ace of Bass) made to modern music. This is one of the main factors that began the disintegration of originality and soul in popular commercial music. Harry is a cool guy, but he is absolutely making use of the tricks that slick high end pop producers have made available to their clients as an alternative to the hard work of coming up with original, saleable songs the old fashioned way.

      @@RadicalR0nnie I have been going on a musical exploration of younger artists (I'm old & retired) that has led me to Harry Styles and others. I've had interesting "conversations" we many people, with varying opinions, from what I've learned, this young man writes all of his songs, on all of his albums. With very few exceptions,he writes with the same small core of friends and bandmates. He is open about his administration for the artists before him. From what I've heard he has put his spin on things. He is young and still figuring himself out. I expect his music will keep changing I'm not replying to argue a point, I just wanted to share the facts I've discovered. I came to this channel because I expected a more mature take on the artists and I was Not disappointed. I was a little disappointed to read how biased and dismissive a lot of the comments are.
