I found it to be really well done. I love it that even though the program hasn't been called "Saturday Night" for 49 years now, they never changed the line "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" For me, that line lets me know that they have never forgotten SNL's roots.
We saw it on Saturday! I had a blast. I'm a Belushi fan and I thought they were a little hard on him, but that does come directly from the book that it's mostly taken from. Very well done, I hope the box office picks up.
@@shawnuel AV Club: For what it’s worth, the hit rate is pretty decent; for every casting clang-poor Matt Wood has been coached to overplay Belushi as a feral animal, without much hint of grace-there are several, particularly O’Brien as Aykroyd and Morris as Morris, that nail the vibes with resorting to distracting imitation.
when you go see it, bring your blood pressure meds with you, or whatever you take to avoid a mini anxiety episode. you will feel the ups and downs of lorne during the count down. loved the movie, will have to see it again with captions to appreciate all the dialogue.
Saw it this past weekend and thought it was great. It is a reminder of me and my friends staying home on Saturday nights, getting stoned and laughing our asses off. FYI Fridays were the serious drinking nights. Funny that hasn't changed.
I saw it. It’s outstanding. It hasn’t been released in a lot of theaters sadly, which is why the box office is so low. My theater had a descent crowd for an early showing. I definitely think it deserves some Oscar buzz. 🐝
Aykroyd described the movie as engaging, funny, and beautifully acted, and applauded the entire cast and crew, including Jason Reitman, the film’s director and producer.
Except Dan Ackroyd doesn't do that in this video. We get to hear the guy who uploaded the video tell us that Dan Ackroyd said it. This is true of most of what's on You Tube now, clickbait.
I saw it over the weekend. As a guy who grew up watching SNL and still do...I loved it. But I think this is a movie for hardcore SNL fans. You won't LOVE it unless SNL was a part of your vital upbringing. The story was good. But it's only GREAT, if you are a fan of the TV show. Much of the nostalgic elements will be completely lost on you if you aren't a student of SNL history. Definitely worth a watch either way though.
Well the up side is the ones too young to remember SNL legacy years will watch it to see their boy Dylan O'Brien in the short shorts. He's making a splash lately so he'll sure bring in a younger audience! 😁 I saw Cousin Greg and was watching it no matter what. Totally skeptical. Until I saw the actor doing Belushi and I was all in. And then I see Chevy Chase and was so impressed. And then without even needing to think about it, I knew Dylan was Aykroyd. The trailer sold me all the way. Not gonna lie though...I do want to see Dylan in the short shorts myself.
I never watched SNL, so Gary makes an interesting point. I was very disappointed with the way the original stars were acted out, especially John Belushi. I actually did the videography for an interview two weeks ago with one of the performers who was on the set for that first performance. One of the questions concerned whether there were any glitches and how much chaos there was on that first night. This person could not think of anything, but maybe they were in the green room during the 90 minutes before the show went live. I didn't care for the movie. The audience didn't laugh much. My girlfriend, who grew up on SNL, had a lukewarm reaction to the movie.
I agree with all the reasons to like it one but let me add one - the music. Nothing from Nothing and At Seventeen are two songs that bring me right back to the 70s and you don’t hear a lot. And they were played that night and are in the film. The film is a love letter to SNL in so many ways.
I saw this movie on opening night on a Friday with my older brother and his friend, his friend is 66 remember the SNL from 1975! He was in highschool, im 48 and my brother 51. It was good 👍👍 directed by Jason Reitman and sore music 🎶 by Jon Bestie. 🎬🎞️🎥
I am relieved to hear that Dan Aykroyd isn't critical of the accuracy since he's willing to implicate anyone and everyone in alien coverups and conspiracies.
What's with Graeme O'Neil? His facial expression looks like he's simultaneously just having eaten something super-spicy hot and trying to pretend it's nothing of concern, while someone is also shining a really bright light directly into his eyes, prompting him to squint. Is this his shtick?
A Futile and Stupid Gesture is a good movie if you want more of the history. Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead is the same thing but more of a Documentary style. Both are good.
Dan Aykroyd endorsing it wholeheartedly makes me more interested in watching this. I was afraid it would be a stupid, error filled piece of fiction...Happy to see that Aykroyd called it pretty accurate.
I attended one of the first season shows (guest starring Anthony Perkins) as a college newspaper photographer. The reporter and I had the run of the stage area, just having to keep out of the way. I think this was one of the lower quality shows but it was still exciting to see the process of putting on such a show. Of course I've seen the show hundreds of times, especially in the first 10-20 years. I remember we would interrupt a night of clubbing to rush home to watch (no VCR's or TIVO then). So, of course I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.
I grew up watching SNL, and saw the first show on TV. Got to stay up late with my older siblings to do so. Little did my parents know how "adult" the show was and how it influenced kids in their teens through 20's. I actually liked the Muppets (Land of Gortch) on SNL, it had a lot of hidden innuendo in it and was funny. All of the Not Ready for Prime Time players were hilarious. You could see early on that Chase, Ackyroyd, Belushi, and Radner were going to be the stars. Curtain, Newman, and Morris didn't get enough material the first few shows. I'm debating on seeing the movie, but am inspired by what I've seen from the trailers.
I will definitely see it, I remember watching that first episode because George Carlin was the host and I watched it for him. Genius first host to get! I know, I’m dating myself
I hope people go see "Saturday Night". It might just be my favorite movie from this year (sorry, Deadpool). I'll definitely be picking it up on blu ray when it eventually gets released.
Refresh my memory. Back in the 80s there was a similar type of show that came out and was really popular for awhile. It isn't Cracked, MADTV or SCTV. It was something else. I watched it a few times. The last time I watched it I was babysitting. After the kids went to bed I got into their parents pot stashed and got baked. They had 3 cats who sat at the end of the coffee table staring me down while I'm high and it freaked me out so bad I got a broom and chased them into the bathroom and shut the door. I remember this black singer doing 96 Tears to the mod psychedelic effects on the screen. Then I called my friend to relieve me, went home and had my first ever full on anxiety attack. And all I want to know is the name of that show so I could find out who that guy was lol. EDIT..........NM! I got it. It was Fridays and that guy was Garland Jeffries. I even found the video on here. Gotta love youtube archive videos!
You're probably thinking of Fridays which was broadcast on ABC on, you guessed it, Friday nights. It was the short-lived launching pad for the careers of none other than Larry David and Michael Richards of "Seinfeld" fame.
Do you mean 'In Living Color?' - it was on Fox and pretty much launched the careers of Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, all the Wayans, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, and several others.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I can see some Oscar noms for it. I wonder if the appeal is more for more mature folks like myself who were there from the beginning of SNL.
If you weren't alive from 1975-79, I'm here to tell you that this was THE greatest show in the history of television. It fell off some thereafter with Eddie Murphy, then rebounded some from '84-'85, and good shows/skits here and there but its pretty much garbage compared to its heyday. I wish they'd cancel it after this 50th season.
If you’re implying the “Morris” actor from the movie couldn’t be the son (or grandson) of Garrett Morris based on the mathematics of their respective ages, that is not true as the younger Morris certainly could be.
I seen the movie in theaters and it was awesome I can't believe the box office it's sad and hurtful this movie was so fucking good and had the greatest cast ever. I got great reviews but it's sad because people don't know great movie's when it falls in there lap.
that endorsement by Aykroyd rather shows this to be a "safe" movies with no risk and won't offend anyone...which is kinda antithetical to what the original concept of SNL was...isn't it?
It had dogshit promotion. It’s solid. I don’t know about Oscar talk but its certainly a look into the chaos of sketch comedy show especially when dramatic personalities, drugs and amateur hour cast and crew are everywhere.
I suspect that the people who care about this history are the same people who long ago gave up on the movie theatre experience, and that the people who do go to movie theartres are too young to care. I mean, there are no tights and not even a single cape in the trailer.
To be honest, I didn't like the first half of the movie and nearly walked out. Nothing but chaos, one disaster after another, a lot of disconnected bits that seemed endless and eventually tiresome. But I stayed til the end and was glad I did. Of course it helped, knowing that the show was going to succeed. When showtime finally arrived, and the first sketch got laughs, you could feel a sense of triumph and history in the making.
I absolutely love. Origjnal. Snl shows. A d i have absolutely no interest in watch n a Reenactment ! Why? Would u watch a waterd down version when you can just watch the real. Deal. ?
It got my blood pressure up. The instrumental soundtrack is brilliant. S.O.S. Save our Satire. Comedy is an American freedom we are losing.
I absolutely loved this movie. The performances were uncannily amazing. 👍🏿❤️

Loved the movie, my first time in the theater in almost 2 years. I was not disappointed.
We saw it on Saturday! I had a blast. I'm a Belushi fan and I thought they were a little hard on him, but that does come directly from the book that it's mostly taken from. Very well done, I hope the box office picks up.
I've always thought history has been a bit easy on Belushi, So, I will probably agree with this aspect of the film.

Saw it at the Toronto Film Festival. Great performances. Well directed and cuts a great pace that creates suspense even though you know the outcome.
Aykroyd described the movie as engaging, funny, and beautifully acted, and applauded the entire cast and crew, including Jason Reitman, the film’s director and producer.
Now I don't have to watch the video. 😂

Highly recommend Saturday night. Great movie!
Saw it yesterday and thought it was great. It was fast paced, funny, and interesting.
Seen twice already u do need to see it . Great movie
Haven't seen it yet, but definitely plan to soon!

This is a lot like the Fox TV Show "24" in format. We are seeing this in real time, the final two hours before airtime. Tense, exciting and funny
The movie was panned around here, here being Boston. One star, if memory serves.

It was wonderful. I would see it again! Hilarious 😂

Forget the A-list. Dan Akroyd was on the A++- list. You can't be any bigger than he was in the Blues Brothers timeline.

Dan thinks the Coneheads movie is amazing. He loves everything he’s been involved with. Still want to see the movie.
Bro, are you like Colin Quinn’s 1st cousin or long lost brother?!? This is uncanny…
Do you need big box return$ to earn a best picture nomination? I thought it was about artistic merit, not popularity. 😏
Man, I thought I was listening to Colin Quinn for a minute there. Talk about a doppelganger!
Ironic that the actor who played Garrett Morris also has the surname "Morris" yet isn't related to him from what I've read thus far.
What “math” are you referring to?

😂😂😂 Until this popped up in my YT feed just now I'd forgotten all about Aykroyd's "1970s gay pornstar" moustache 😂😂😂
Having seen the first episode back in the day, I can only say that the meal was too good to worry about how the dish was made.🤔
Yeah, I’ll bet it’s a real “Masterpiece “.
21 seconds in a good way you look just like Ray Stevenson.

So glad they managed to fit in Garrett Morris's song "Gonna Grab Me a Shotgun."
Hadn’t thought of that in 40+ years. That was classic, took me back in an instant. THANKS!
Is it a montage of skits during the first year or the actual skits for the first show?
Loved it but not enough attention and respect was given to the women.
It's not showing in Columbus Ohio. I would see it.

Another thumbnail ripoff. Where was Akroyd?
I predict that it will become a cult movie. I have not seen it, but plan to buy it when it is released and watch it over and over again.

Luckily for this film, box office receipts don't factor into Oscar nominations either way.

This clip was a mess. Not enough scenes to even try to recognize the cast. The fast talking dude over the top of tweets was annoying.
It's OK, but hard to follow at times, as the actors don't much resemble the real persons.
Graeme O’Neil sounds like he’s been constipated for months. His delivery is so annoying, I bailed after 60 seconds.
