It's so satisfying watching somebody meticulously dig up turf. On the other hand, what a horrible job it actually is haha. Stupidly, I dug up 24m2 of lawn this year during a really dry spell. What an effort!
From 40 years experience, I would say the most important factors to consider are choosing the absolute best plants for the space, making sure they are sun and heat tolerant if exposed to afternoon sun, and the spacing plants. Make sure the plants don't crowd themselves after reaching the desired size.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
That little girl is so cute. Nice job.
When planting a tree, I would’ve spread out the roots after you cut it with the blade, take some time to spread it out at the bottom on all sides. Great video, thank you.
Thank you for filming from beginning to end. It was very instructive for me.
On one spot in my yard I accidentally spilled a lot of fertilizer so the grass died. About 2 weeks after I decided I wanted to make a new flower bed. Took the grass from that area and put it on my bald spot. It has almost bounced back. Love how your flower bed turned out.
I appreciate the nice comment. It really ended up nice and if you watch some of my other videos you will see it just a couple of months later. Quite a bit of work but it turned out nice. Thanks for watching.
This video is vey clearly explained. Great job! I have to make a new garden bed for irises that i had to upnroot and it is daunting to me but i learned a lot from you. Thanks!
That is the same spade i use every day at work to do what you did in your video. Nice choice of tree, too! Great choice of tree, too!
👍 definitely a great 'go to' channel for helpful info on so many projects and equipment.
You had a great helper there! Fantastic information as usual.
I love this man's skills!
Nice looking bed! Seems like a lot of work for the size of that bed. I honestly would have used a SOD cutter. Me, as a contractor I don't have 3 days to just remove the SOD lol. For people with no deadline, this would well. Again, great job. Thanks for sharing.
The kids are cute 👍
I cut long sections and roll them onto a tarp. As I roll I can easily scrape off as much loose soil as possible. Then I just drag the tarp to a suitable dump site. It saves a lot of energy.
Another method is to flip the grass and let it compost in place and mulch over the top.
Richard Portelli also can roundup the grass then cover with mulch after it dies off. Saves the labor and adds nutrients to the soil.
@@orthodoc22 true about labour saving but I am worried about the negative effects of roundup on soil health and links to cancer etc.
That is exactly what I do when I make a new bed, I think it is easier and helps the soil as it breaks down.
what a good job, well done to you and your girls they done the most work i am sure they will agree ha ha lovely job it looks so good
Thank you very much
@@SilverCymbal you have to keen gardeners, next step gardeners world for them ha ha look after your self with this virus going round keep safe yours paul
Great video! Very helpful
Cute helpers 👍
High quality content!
Thank you I really appreciate it
You got rid of the best part of your topsoil. You should have used mulching right over the grass.
Awesome job❗
If you plant original container the plant came in into the ground 1st, move it around a little bit, backfill the container while in the ground the plant goes in much quicker and straighter faster.
Extremely helpful video, thank you!!
Thank you very much
very nice video, great camera work. loved the driving away and back filmed on a tripod!
Thank you I appreciate that a lot!
That is a nice looking bed.
Thank you for sharing.
thank you! i need to do this along side my fence on the one side because moss just love that shady area..
Good job, your soil is nice, mine is very hard compacted and full of stones . I'm planing to do a garden bed in my front yard too
Mine to, and clay to boot! Did you do your bed?
Nice work. Your videos are very well done. Keep an eye on that river birch’s roots. They tend to have shallow roots and will compete with the adjacent grass for sunlight and nutrients. Ask me how I know :).
Thank you very much, that's good to know I will make sure to keep it in check. Thanks for watching.
well, if I was looking for a video on planting trees and shrubs, I found it, but the heading said "garden bed," where is that part?
Impressive!
The loveliest part of the Video..
The Cute Lil girl
Classic tree choice, but at 70 feet maturity might dwarf some homes and should have ample space to fully grow.
Kind of alarmed by how shallow the grass roots were, but I guess it helped remove it...
So far I’ve counted a shovel, a thatch rake, a landscape rake, a golf cart, a box cutter, and a post hole digger. 😂
True. But pay a landscaper and they would have taken $2k for one bed like this.
What kind of shrubs were the 3 you planted in front of the tree
Great tutorial video for sure!! Are those Merrell shoes?
what brand of shovel are you using? I'm using a (wider) Anvil flathead transfer shovel (cheap one from HD) and I'm having such a hard time cutting through the grass.
Where can I get that shovel? Brand & type please. Want to get my garden started. Nice vid. Thanks!!!!

Looks nice, and good video. What kind of shrubs did you plant? I think I’d like those....
What is the name of the 3_shrubs you planted?
This was such a great video I am so happy you shared it. Thank you. Do you have an update of how it looks today?
Looked like boxwoods
@@richardcarn9849 His description mentions Japanese Holly. Though they do look like boxwood.
Jesus if my lawn was that easy to uplift... How did you do it so cleanly?? My grass or infact weed grows spreads across meters.. so to lift it up like that is impossible. But yeah new healthy grass is definitely easier to uplift unlike my weedy lawn :(
Do you have notifications turned off for some reason?
As far as I know notifications are on per user. I can't control them. You have to have the bell on to be notified, RUclips even you subscribe wont show you some videos for a multitude of reasons they think is OK
What are the names of the shrubs you planted, very nice?
Japanese holly from his description.
thats like cutting cake! my grass will not cut like this. roots are deep and very hard to remove.
This wasn't easy at all, no grass is. What really made a big difference was this shovel. Not cheap but every cut and stroke goes quicker and easier. Worth its weight in gold, plus it will literally last forever. amzn.to/2XfKSF4
Has an update video been made yet??
This video shows a little of how it came out later. ruclips.net/video/CptKylzKo00/видео.html - More videos coming this season but you can see the positive results in that video
1:42 did anyone think go on paint the dog lol
River birch are the bane of my existence. We bought our house a few years ago and unfortunately inherited 3 giant ones. They drop an insane amount of branches year round. Their roots are very invasive and they destroy driveways and lawns. Do yourself a favor and pull it out while you can and plant something else. I’m telling you, in 5 years you’ll remember this comment when you’re in your back yard cursing that thing. Mine are in huge beds and the roots have gone way past the beds. My dad had one in his backyard that he just cut down because it destroyed his yard.
I loved the shade ours gave but when the 2 from our backyard grew roots under our house and started sprouting new trees in our front yard I knew it was time to cut them down. I'm still finding little "volunteer" saplings all over my yard 😑
I just cut down my river birch. Messy tree, sucks moisture from lawn. Hate these trees
thaddeusc44 was on my property when I bought the place, but your broader point is dead on. My HOA doesn’t let us cut down many tress but river birches are despised. Lol
