  • @chris1275cc
    @chris1275cc 2 месяца назад +4

    I know people roll their eyes at the idea of 13 & 14 speed cassettes, but It's where things start to get a bit more interesting as it's right in the ballpark to give you an even spread (no big jumps) across a typical road gear range with no redundancy/duplicates. Effectively giving you the equivalent of a 2x11 or 2x10 (depending on your chosen range) in a 1x. Doesn't solve chainline issues, of course, but then again, how much time do we actually spend in the highest and lowest gears? Most people (including me) already treat 2x12 more like a 2x11+1 opting for a 11-34/36 over the typical 11-28/32.
    Maybe that's why they are offering a rim brake option?🤷‍♂

    • @ribblevalleycyclist
      @ribblevalleycyclist  2 месяца назад +1

      My personal choice as a rider, I'm not a fan of 1x, and I personally don't see the benefit of 12/13/14 speed.
      1x - I spend my life in the big dog (52), turning those cranks slow. Only when the road ahead gets unpleasant, do I shift to the granny ring. I don't do any serious gravel, so I know I'll spin this groupset out constantly.
      12/13/14 speed - In most cases, requires a narrower chain, which will be more vulnerable to failure. Additionally, no 12/13 speed user will agree with this point, but because of the restrictions created by the freehub depth, 11 shifts better.

    • @TheAntoine191
      @TheAntoine191 Месяц назад

      There are at least as much chainline issues on 2X than 1X. Most of riding is done at the middle of the range where big is too big and small is too small and i'm mostly never satisfied what i end up riding on 2X. For pros it's ok because except the steepest climb they ride Big and small on the occasional long steep climb. But for most of us 2X is un balanced.

    • @chris1275cc
      @chris1275cc Месяц назад

      @@TheAntoine191 I'm talking "chainline issues" more in terms of physical limitations than gear ratios, 1x12 wide range is already pushing it to the point the chain wants to fall down the cassette, adding 1 or 2 more cogs is only going to make the cassette wider, exacerbating the issue.

    • @TheAntoine191
      @TheAntoine191 Месяц назад

      @@chris1275cc i don't think so. When riding double one often cross chain if it's a short hill for example which is much worse than 1X. Been riding 12s huge mtb cassette for nearly a decade with (mostly) no issue. Only problem is when manucaturer put drivetrain for 52mm on 55mm chainline which is often nowaday.

    The one thing annoying me so much is these Chinese brand often use the 1st batch of customer as a testing platform , and only release update / final version later. Experience on the L-too eRX ( the first batch of the brake lever joint is made with plastic and it brakes easily the later version they changed it with alloy) , as well as the wheeltop EDS ( they changed the brake shifter rubber, the 1st version is so stiff like brick and 2nd version they replaced with a softer rubber). I will consider buying use but only after it will have been some time on the market and we see some proper amd unsponsored reviews. Right now it's too much of a gamble considering issues with tx. I wonder if they fixed the problem with non-encrypted/paired signal transmission which is I heard is an issue with tx leading to being able to change gears on someone else's tx derailleur with your brifter. I also wonder if they made any update to the companion app as it is not quite user friendly and it is hard to set up tx to work properly with it. Also, this gex has a race and casual modes which change the speed of shifting and apparently in the race mode the derailleur does not poweroff at all as in casual mode, draining the battery. That's a big overlook.
    Their website says that brake pads are shimano compatible, e.g. L05A, so 26.4 mm wide. They brakes use mineral oil and shimano bh-59 fittings

      Watched a few Chinese unboxings when doing research, and they all had the road callipers. Suspect Wheeltop rushed this one through.

      14s cassette is specially desgined for their OEM partner, you could customize a 14s if you want.

    You ridiculed rim brake option but stated being targeted at upgrade, well exactly some people with rim brake bikes will want to upgrade bikes power train. Well done TDS

      Then buy the road version, it’s a superior system, that has been designed for use with rim brake bikes.

    OK! In the early 90's, I was annoyed with people who complained about the expanding cassettes beyond 5. "Eddie won five on five" was the mantra. So, this may sound a little hypocritical of me now. But, I think it just needs to stop now. 12, maybe 13 is more than enough. I have three bikes with SRAM. Two with a mullet setup. The range is crazy.

      Well said! You can have a 27 sprocket cassette, but it ain't gonna do you any favours on Hardknott Pass!!

    Non removable battery is the deal breaker here👎. Saying it's a patent issue for preventing removable battery it's like saying one car manufacturer can put a "patent" on on cars with 4 wheels...???

      In case this is not supposed a joke: no. Depending on the cassette range and the jump between the 2 chainrings 2x7 gives you 8 to 10 distinct gear ratios.

      @@detmer87 I couldn't care less about stuff like this. I'm not going to win a pro race anyway. Losses due to cross chaining are pretty much negligible for the average Joe anyway. What does have a bigger impact is losses due to higher chain articulation with smaller (1x) chain rings.
