  • This is the story of Jennifer Wapenski, Managing Editor of Hunting Dog Confidential Magazine, and her path into the uplands behind a Deutsch Langhaar.
Jennifer’s story is unique, and universal. It describes one woman’s journey of discovery, and the quest to forge a deeper connection with the natural world shared by hunters everywhere. And while it is true that a passion for the great outdoors inspired her, and that the folks she met along the way broadened her horizons, it was a 4-legged hunting partner that sparked the flame. Today if you asked Jennifer to explain why she started hunting, in ten words or less, I am pretty sure she would just quote Aaron Fraser Pass as say “it was the dog’s idea”.

I've watched this short film easily half a dozen times over the past month. I just bought a Brittany pup and would love to give him the opportunity to do what he was bred for. Thanks for the inspiration (and the beautiful scenery!).

There is a spiritual connection that you can only get with the animals by hunting them. 40 years experience as a hunter conservationalist.

I love it! I’ve just gotten into upland bird hunting myself. There is something about the sport that is incredible to take part of as well as film. You captured the essence of it all beautifully

Yep, it's called Hunting, not Getting, and the lessons learned that formulate our confidence is, Priceless, although we wouldn't mind it being less expensive.

Same here. I grouse hunt in N Central WA and love it; am hoping to add a dog to the mix, and maybe go after other birds. Better than paying a therapist! You find info/links, share them! I'm "sniffing" around Brittanys myself.

Your journey is in the right place! I’m 66, bird hunted all my life and currently have 4 pointers, 3 setters and 3 labs ( we live on a farm). Putting the dogs in the right spot and they will hunt, learn to seek objectives that hold birds and you’ll figure it out. Chukars need rocks and water; quail need brush and water; grouse need brush, grass and trees; Huns need grass and ?(they are where you find them). Nice video and good luck going forward .

How can you tell if someone is an engineer? Don't worry, they'll let you know.
I see this as growth in the sport. Much like the growth in MT trout fishing.

Did I hear correctly that she bred her first bird dogs and the second dog she has is an offspring from the first? Was there some professional insight and guidance on the breeding? SM aren't super common in the US and I would think the breeding program structure would be somewhat delicate and it is hard to imagine a novice could have the insight required to see a good dog worthy of breeding or not. Then again, maybe they had some real guidance there, just seemed odd to me.

Alex - not a SM their dogs are GLs and piper (the 3yo) is a VC 204, very good breeding. I hunt and train with both Joe and Jenn, great people and great dogs!

@@eriknielsen4898 ah nice, they looked smaller than German Longhairs to me. Good to hear she performed well in the versatile circuit before breeding.

You heard right that we bred her, but Deutsch Langhaar are really tightly controlled for breeding and we met all the requirements before doing so! They have to pass VJP, HZP, a conformation evaluation, hip exam, etc. I was fortunate to have amazing mentorship and guidance from incredibly knowledgeable people within the breed club along the whole journey.

It seriously goes beyond me how you could mistake those DL for KlM... Modern culture has a term coined for people like you: casual. 😉
