Gotta give some love to Tiran Porter, one of my favorite bass players. He never takes the obvious route, always playing something interesting that acts as a counterpoint to the main melody while still driving the song forward. And a great singer too!
Spot on!! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and Tiran Porter created some of the most incredible bass lines I have ever heard. Beyond my current skill level, but working on getting there.
Just saw these guys live last night. In their mid 70s, and they still bring it. Played nonstop for almost two and a half hours....25 songs! Absolute legends!
My favourite Doobie brothers song. I just love that funky Gm7 chord driving the rhythm throughout the song and keeping the train runnin'. The early Doobies with Tom Johnston is the sound that I prefer. 🎶👍🏽
I’m Tommy, I’m 61 now and am a huge fan of your reactions. I can give you perspective on a man that lived when this music was coming out. The Doobies have always been an extremely under rated band. Check out Jesus is just all right. People may disagree with me. But it’s their best song. I wish you both Peace and success. 😎
"Long Train Running" is from the album, "The Captain and Me" which was part of the soundtrack for the Seventies and a lot of great music. That whole album is worth listening to!
In the 70's this intro riff was one of the first you learned on a guitar. A combination of strumming and picking unique to Tom Johnston. Thanks for the fun memory.
Tommy Johnston (lead vocals on this track) came down with serious stomach issues and was replaced by McDonald and the band transitioned to a more laid back sound. A few years later Johnston returned, McDonald left and they returned to the rock sound to this day. Saw Three Dog Night in concert around 1972 and the Doobies, who nobody had ever heard of at the time, were the opening act and blew the roof off the place. A couple of weeks later Listen To The Music hit the airwaves.
The album this is from, The Captain and Me was released 50 years ago. I bought it that same year, when I was 13 on the advice of my older brother. Still love every track to this day and it is still one of my top 10 favorite all time albums. Not a weak track on there and worthy of an entire album reaction. Highlights for me include the Johnston and Simmons guitar opus Without You, Clear as the Driven Snow, Ukiah and Dark Eyed Cajun Woman. Jeff Skunk Baxter also of Steely Dan fame played pedal steel guitar on South City Midnight Lady…another banger. Shameful that it took till 2020 for these musical geniuses to be inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame!
❤️ the pre-MMcD Doobies. I’ve seen them live without him, and with him, then all of them and their families at the Ventura County Fair. I’ve also seen a solo Tom Johnston. They will always be a favorite!! ☮️❤️
Early Doobies vs. McDonald Doobies. Tom left the band for personal reasons and then came back. They are still in concert using both singers so yeah, check em out. Got to see the Tom version in college in the 70s.
Takes me back to my teen years! The Doobies had a great groove... and those bongos added special sauce! Music from the 70's was fantastic. I enjoy watching younger generations discovering for themselves how talented the songwriters, instrumentalists and vocalists were to lay down tracks like this, without auto tune and other enhancements. No disrespect to today's artists--- because there are some great ones---but I wish everybody under 30 would listen to a few songs like this from 50 years ago to experience authentically great talent. Thanks for opening your minds to rock, funk, blues, and all the other genres that we got to enjoy. Hope it will keep this music alive and well!!
The pre Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers were the BEST!!! More to check out from the "pre" era: "China Grove"; "Black Water"; "Jesus is Just Alright"; “Takin’ It to the Streets”; “Listen to the Music”, and so many more!
Had just bought my first car when this song was popular. No air conditioning of course, so opened windows, summer nights and The Doobie Brothers on the radio.
The Captain & Me still my favorite Doobie's album. This song, China Grove, Natural Thing, South City Midnite Lady, and on and on. Every song is great. You guys need to do the whole album.
This was our jam song in marching band when I was in high school back in the 80's. We had so much fun with this song. The crowd always enjoyed it too. Good times.
The Doobie Brothers group's first half-dozen albums had a rock feel that morphed into a sound steeped in white funk. It's a compelling story of changing with the times and the influences of the music they loved. So in their way, they had two careers and a wider appeal to more people. That's what good music is all about. It's all good.
Great song, one of my favorite groups y’all got a good thing going here I’m a California born from Lompoc my dad was stationed at Vandenberg from 60-63
I recently went to a Doobie Brothers concert. They are currently on their 50th Anniversary Tour. Please see them if you can. It was an incredible show. Excellent reaction gentlemen ❤
Never knew how good these guys were during my teen years...I just liked their name....Thanks for bringing them back so I can appreciate them with adult ears....
Yea I really enjoy them for a number of reasons. They own their own studio. So they understand music. Probably better than I ever will. I’m just a guy who loves music. I appreciate your response. Peace 😎
Great song by an iconic band! I agree with many comments here on two fronts: it was great to be alive then and experience this music as it was made! Am 70 now and can’t believe those years passed so quickly….also, you two are my fav reactors, and i feel honored to have found you when you began and have watched you grow..not to mention hear your fresh put on things! Keep up the good work…😊
I had to explain to my husband what a doobie is! And he loves all these am radio favorites. Trust me, he really didn't know. Such a nice clean cut guy. That's reason #8 why I married him. 😀
Without The Doobies where would you be now? Decades of listening and a couple of concerts, still groovin to the reactions of this killer stuff. Thanks guys.
As a 38 year old b-boy from Finland, I gotta say. Your reaction to his classic ham made me smile. Had to try out a couple of my old sets and hurt myself on the living room floor over here. That guitar riff just gets you! Maybe react to Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun. When you get the chance.
Gentlemen: Tiran Porter is the fabulous bass player that grooves! I've loved the Doobie Brothers since junior high and I'm now 62. Keep up the good work, love your reactions and viewpoints. Nice to see some of the younger generation enjoying the golden age of rock n roll.
Tom Johnston on lead vox. Worked with him a few times as a live sound engineer in SF. Loved this band as a kid in the mid 70s. The lead guitar player, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, also played on some really good Steely Dan albums.
I was in HS. All these great bands were competing for airplay. We just took it for granted and didn't know we were listening to history's greatest musical era.
The 1982 LIVE concert from a park in Pasadena has Cornelius Bumpus on vocals, keys, and sax- 2 sets of drummers and a bongo player.....Cornelius (RIP) was also a session Sax player for Steely Dan...
I've said it before and I'll say it again. You guys are the BEST! If you love this groove -- and I know you do, check out the Little River Band's "A Long Way There," the long version. Thanks for keeping truly great music alive.
2 words... "Black Water" A masterpiece! Great reaction channel, guys!
Love Black Water!
Doobies already had a greatest hits album around 1976. This is one great American band.
Every song that you react to from the 70’s (1973) you solidify that the 70”s was the best generation for music ! 🔥❤️🎸
Ain’t that the truth… lived it …loved it …wish I could go back!
The 60's would like a word with you.
@@jimr3882 okay the 60’s too! When you’re right you’re right…
Gotta give some love to Tiran Porter, one of my favorite bass players. He never takes the obvious route, always playing something interesting that acts as a counterpoint to the main melody while still driving the song forward. And a great singer too!
Doobie harmony wouldn't be the same without Tiran's voice.
Spot on!! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and Tiran Porter created some of the most incredible bass lines I have ever heard. Beyond my current skill level, but working on getting there.
Tiran's a great player. It's his playing that first got me to follow the bass line in music. I still consider him to be one of the best.
One of my favorite Doobies songs is Tiran’s “For Someone Special “ ! Great bass and great vocals!
Some fantastic bass parts. Very original. Love his tone. Fat with what sounds like fresh flatwounds. That tone kills me.
They ain't related but THEY DOOBIE BROTHERS 🎉🎉
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhn fuckin a man .
Don't forget their pet dog, scoobie DOOBIE dooooo
13.🪴
😆
Just saw these guys live last night. In their mid 70s, and they still bring it. Played nonstop for almost two and a half hours....25 songs! Absolute legends!
One of the most classic intros in music history
My favourite Doobie brothers song. I just love that funky Gm7 chord driving the rhythm throughout the song and keeping the train runnin'. The early Doobies with Tom Johnston is the sound that I prefer. 🎶👍🏽
A lot of us old school Doobie Brothers fans moved on to greener pastures when Michael McDonald took them in the "Minute by Minute" direction.
I’m Tommy, I’m 61 now and am a huge fan of your reactions. I can give you perspective on a man that lived when this music was coming out. The Doobies have always been an extremely under rated band. Check out Jesus is just all right. People may disagree with me. But it’s their best song.

Oh I love that song too! And by the way I'm 64! Peace and love y'all!
That was originally a Buffalo Springfield song by Roger McGuinn.
@@scottblakey1603 I think you meant the Byrds ??
I'm 63, it truly was an amazing era!
@@martinl8574 there will never be another one like that. Peace!
Doobies always kick ass! ROLL TIDE!
Saw Doobies live last year with Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston. OUTSTANDING!
They come with the intention that their audience will have a good time. Saw them in the late 70s and it was the same.
I'm envious!!
One of their finest.
I still listen to this driving down the highway in my car, window down, wind in hair. Beautiful groove. One of the Doobie's best.
The Doobies were the soundtrack at our house.
"Long Train Running" is from the album, "The Captain and Me" which was part of the soundtrack for the Seventies and a lot of great music. That whole album is worth listening to!
70's music just hits different
It sure does! The BEST music ever in my opinion so thankful I lived then to experience it all!
An engineering and mix masterpiece…..you can clearly hear all the instruments in their own space
A great time for music. Just my opinion. The best Era for music. Thanks fellas for a great reaction!. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤

I grew up in the right era of music over 50 years later and it still sounds great
The Doobies “What Were Once Vices are now Habits” was the sound track to my summer, the year it came out! Couldn’t get it off the record player!
Peace
"Jesus is just alright with me" is a real good tune.
Great groove and great reaction, gents!
been loving this song since i was a teenager 50 years ago. ty for playing it guys.
They sounded AMAZING 3 weeks ago!! Steve Winwood opened for them and sounded AMAZING!
Part of soundtrack of life❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love them! Funky, soulful! Oh that harmonica! Makes you want to move and groove!❤️
That ent album was what got me into them. Tom Johnston is a beast
Same! I saw him when he went on his own - early 80’s - in a small bar just north of San Diego.
Oh yeah love this jam
A joy to hear this again. ❤

This was originally just a intro jam .The fans response was always so big they decided to put words to it..

Lovin' the Tom Johnston rocker vibe here. Both he and McDonald were awesome leads. Whether it's rock or R&B, you can't go wrong with the Doobies.
Pass the dutchie on the left hand side brothers!

Great reaction! Thanks for this, brought back some great memories. Had the pleasure of seeing them in concert back in ‘81, fantastic concert!
"Black Water" if you haven't already heard is a Doobie masterpiece IMO.
We took all the music for granted. Love to do it all again.
All Doobies music great! My favorite band.

If the world could hold a cookout with the Doobies playing I think we could solve most of our problems
One of my all time fave songs ever!!
Another cool track reminds me of my Dad who made sure our house was filled with good music growing up ❤ 🎶

Blackwater is still my favorite Doobie Brothers song by a LONG LONG shot.

Off what I consider to be the best overall album of all time…” The Captain and Me”.Most of their careers they had 2 in sync drummers in concert.

Ah, yes, The Doobie Brothers - so Americana. Check out their "China Grove" and "Black Water" (and others) as well!
Classic Doobies, a lot of soul but still a lot of rock.
Michael and his keys were a monstrous change in the Doobie sound.. more than the absence of Tommy's vocals.. Top notch American talent in the 70's..
love this song! foot tapping head bopping perfection, love that you can hear the train in the music 🎶
beautiful - still holds up 2023
Excellent! I think you will enjoy "China Grove".
