To the Jon Jones fans who say “Jon has earned his right to a legacy fight, him and Stipe are legends”.
Genuine question, what do you not understand about him being the current World champion? As the current World champion, you SHOULD fight the next in line who has earned it, and Tom as the interim champion, has absolutely earned that right
There is no room for sentiment in sport at the HIGHEST level. You don’t just allow people an easier path because we respect what they did in years gone by. If he wants to defend his title then he fights Tom. If he wants his sentimental legacy fight, then he should release the title. How can people not get that? Remove your biases and look at this objectively
It’s like if Portugal get to the World Cup final in a couple of years and it’s CR7s last ever game, it would be like the ref allowing Ronaldo to run thru clear on goal and score because of what he’s done for the game.
You lose the essence of what sport is about when you start gifting people an easy ride, and that’s exactly what Jones is trying to get with fighting Stipe (a man who can barely walk).

The fact you mentioned Tom being submitted outside of the UFC shows you’re clutching at straws too.
It’s a sport. If you love Jon Jones and he makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, that’s absolutely fine mate, but you know in your heart of hearts that the interim champion DESERVES to fight the current champion.

I feel like the UFC want to keep a hold of Jon wearing the belt so they can have the Stipe fight headline a big event for a title. But the UFC have literally invented a belt for these purposes and (regardless of divided opinion on it) it was good for business. The BMF worked for that fight at that time. So why not, ask Jon to either sign to fight Tom next OR he relinquishes/is stripped of the Undisputed belt and make the Stipe fight for a ‘GOAT’ belt, a special one similar to the BMF. Division can move on and be legitimate, they can have the legacy super fight, and have it be for a title in all the promos. Thoughts?

I'm thinking, and hoping, the ufc is being pushed into such a corner here that they have no choice but to do something, which could be getting that belt back from him. Jon losing to Tom would be the biggest passing of the torch in UFC history, it would give Tom that accolade and immense confidence to go on and win multiple fights in a row against the best guys in the division and maybe even lure Ngannou back to fight him (and Ngannou isn’t getting any younger so Tom winning that fight in 2-3 years is very possible), but Jon is a sandbagger so he won’t do the honourable thing for a fellow fighter, his ego is too big.

There's powerful brand value in the UFC being able to "claim" Jones, if that makes sense. If Jones loses to Aspinall, all those bragging rights go away. No way Dana's risking that.

You guys dont understand, it goes deeper than this. The UFC are using Jones as a proxy against Francis. They need to let Jones have an easy final fight before he retires, once this happens, the UFC can say "See Jones beat Stipe and destroyed Gane, he really is the best of all time and would have beaten Francis. Francis is not the real champ". If Jones loses then it will give Francis more power, make him look better than Jones and thus would prove further that the UFC made a mistake in not giving into Francis. Jones is a pawn.

I think the main problem is Stipe TG. It’s so obvious that the fans would love to have seen Aspinall v Miocic at UFC 300 and the winner goes on to fight Bones Jones when he’s recovered from injury. The reality unfortunately is Stipe has a guaranteed pot of gold and a so called ‘legacy fight’ with Jon (even though Big Franny flattened him last time) so he ain’t gonna take a fight against Tom that he knows he loses. If he was confident he woulda said yes. I think Tom fights the winner of Blaydes v Almeida then onto Gane. Us fans need to keep on at Stipe and Jones to get Tom his more than deserved fight with Stipe and eventually Jones. The UFC are normally spot on but on this occasion they are well off what the fans want 🥊👍

TG being revisionist, but then again he is defending a fellow Brit. This is second time the current and interim title holders dont fight. It happened with GSP, Whittaker and Bisping. Also, the UFC has been about what makes the most sense financially and it has been that way for some time now. I dont get why people still think this sport is still about meritocracy, when it hasn't been in god knows how long. Also, the revisionism about Gane is hilarious, because I vividly remember people saying that Jones wouldn't be able to handle HW power, he wouldn't be bale to handle the size of Gane and his striker was far to crafty. Sure the wrestling was always in question, but no one thought Jones was going to get him out of there with the ease in which he did it. Everytime he fought anyone who was a similar size to him he really struggled, and debatably even lost a few of those fights. The Reyes fight springs to mind, as does the first Gustafsson one.

I'm not a super MMA-enthusiast but I enjoy it, and even I have noticed that MMA is now moving at such a rapid pace...you're going to see a lot of people put in the lurch when "business" decisions sideline them for 2-4 years in their prime. I think we're going to see the end of 12-15 year long MMA careers outside of certain weight classes. The competition/skill just seems to be amping up rapidly. As you say - the young come in and take the crown from the old, etc.
The past 5-10 years you've seen a lot of "oh he's coming back!" kind of announcements for ex-champs, etc. I think those days are going to disappear. If you haven't fought for 2-4 years, you shouldn't even be in the promotion. There's no time/space for that nonsense.

UFC has turned into boxing anyways with the fighters not fighting eachother the more they rise up the ranks so you never get to see the best fight the best until its too late or someone has a disadvantage but takes the fight anyway instead of two healthy prime fighters going at it

I don’t see how this is so hard to understand for people. Jon Jones has beaten beast after beast. After every one of his fights, his next opponent is always the ‘one’ to be able to beat him. Point being, even if he were to beat Aspinall, fans and media would immediately claim someone else is the next big thing. 6’7 Robelis Despaigne who just signed will be who they talk about next. Jones has done his time for the sport, beaten champ after champ. If he wants to finish his career against the Heavyweight GOAT, so be it! He’s earned that, he is not a new champion who needs to prove himself.

If he wants to finish his career with a fake "legacy fight" he needs to relinquish the belt. And a win over Tom Aspinall will age much better than a win over current Stipe.

@@azyy1248 So stripping the actual champ (Jon Jones) and giving Aspinall an even faker belt makes more sense lol? Aspinall then would not have beaten Ngannou or Jon to be champ. Aspinally also just lost to Blaydes recently. He would be the definition of a paper champ.

@@JJDon5150 You are either a bot or paid UFC shill. Nobody can be this dumb.
If Aspinall's belt is fake so is Jon's. Jon won a vacant belt, never beat Ngannou and has one win at HW. Aspinall is the much more credentialed HW.
Yes, giving the belt to Aspinall so the division can move on literally makes the most sense. If Jon refuses to fight the best he shouldn't be keeping the belt hostage.
Aspinall lost to Blaydes by a knee injury 13 seconds into the fight. The fact you're bringing this up is like me saying Jon isn't undefeated cos of the Matt Hammil loss. This just shows you don't know what you're talking about.
Jon is the definition of a paper champ. Francis Ngannou is the real champ.

I get frustrated with football and Uefa, but at least league schedules are published in advance, and you win the Champions League by getting through the group and then beating everyone good that year. Legacy, previous record counts for nothing (at least for now - see Swiss model and Super League) - you have to win now. Fighting can be great to watch, but the BS around getting fights to the ring or cage is soul-destroying

It's not embarrassing. Jon first fought in the UFC in 2008 and has fought the who's who. Dude is the recognized GOAT of MMA. He doesn't have to fight every young buck calling him out. Aspinal has done nothing compared to Jon...or Stipe. Aspinal will be saying the same thing as Jon and Stipe 10 years from now if he has a storied career. Jon and Stipe have earned the right to pick who they fight.

At first glance I thought you wrote "steroid career"... lol
I think the point of being a champion over a division is by beating the best in the division. If you aren't willing to fight the next in line you should be vacating the belt.
If someone else holds the interim belt, it means they stepped in and beat the next in line, basically doing what you couldn't (due to injury).
Now it's your obligation to defend and one way or another unify the belts again.

@@simonkingi01 I could agree with you about Jon giving up the HW belt and the UFC putting whoever against Aspinal. Jones doesn't have to fight every up-and-comer to bolster his legacy. Tom doesn't have a legacy yet. Tom should defend the interim belt like Renan Barao did many times. I still want to see the Jones vs Stipe fight.

@@simonkingi01 I give fighters like Jon and Stipe some grace because they've earned it. I'll give Aspinal the same grace once he's had some accomplishments in his career. Guys like GSP, Anderson, Jones, and Stipe are GOATS in their respective weight classes and in MMA in general, and they have earned the right to not be treated as newbies to the sport.
