    Text:
O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,
    They tell me of a home far away;
And they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
REFRAIN: O the land of cloudless days,
O the land of an unclouded sky,
O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
O they tell me of a home where my friends have gone,
They tell me of that land far away,
Where the tree of life in eternal bloom
Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day.
O they tell me of a King in His beauty there,
And they tell me that mine eyes shall behold
Where He sits on a throne that is bright as the sun
In the city that is made of gold.
    -Josiah K. Alwood

One more bit of advice to you students who will be auditioning on this song: Listen to many different recordings, and not just of this arrangement. Do your research. This song has been recorded in many versions, including Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. (Just don’t sound like either of them!) Get the feel of gospel music. The song is around 150 years old.

Lovely choral singing, but to this old Baptist, it’s missing the “folk” style of gospel singing. This is a song that shouldn’t be sung too neatly. Why not some liberties with the pitches (i.e., scoops and fall offs)? This song shouldn’t be sung too “square.” When I’m judging auditions this fall, I’ll be listening for the singers who go beyond the page and into the heart of this song.

I also think that the sopranos, especially, sings with to much vibrato

Agreed. The classics vibrato lends too that. It’s way too wobbly to be folksy.

No. For God's sake, no. It's perfect as is. Your scoops and stuff would ruin it.
