This song cuts straight to the heart. The melody and harmonies in this song are truly special and touch me every time that I hear this song which has been hundreds of times. Stapleton reminds me of some others who were never considered to be country music musicians at all .. such as Bob Seger, Jim Croce or James Taylor. I like to call it "Americana Music". Songs that are basically about the 'American Experience' or the places in America that the singer is either from .. or has been to .. or longs to get back to .. Not that 'Country' doesn't have songs that employ the same subject matter .. but the music and his 'Vibe' is really different from Country. I think one reason people call him 'Country' is his use of the '10-String Pedal Steel Guitar.' Known for its portamento capabilities, gliding smoothly over every pitch between notes, the instrument can produce a sinuous crying sound and deep vibrato emulating the human singing voice which is most often associated with 'Country Music Songs & Standards.' Stapleton does a great job blending different instruments together and incorporating the various sounds that they produce into his own unique style of writing. He's really good and he's getting better all the time. Maybe feature some Piano / Organ parts and how do you think a SAX would sound with his tunes ???
