  • I'd been tipped off about a high-water mark that was supposedly a big fish mark and since I'm looking to beat the season best of 44cm, thought it was worth a shot. The only problem is that you get trapped for a few hours by the high tide, which could be a long few hours if the fish don't show. Luckily some fish turned up and I managed a new PB as well (not too exciting).

@@RichardJeffrey900 I've fished our coast between Fife and Aberdeen for the best part of 30 years. Lost earlier diaries but since winter 2009/10 i have had 2168 cod for over 6800lb (not completed this years stats yet) 32 doubles since i started to 15lb 14 oz, another two 15lbers and three 14lbers. I have a fair idea what conditions to fish. I have had 80 fish this year from around half the trips i usually make, best bag 14 for 43lb 11oz, best fish of the winter only 8lb 10 oz . If you know anyone with more comprehensive documented record keeping that can say this has been a good year in any metric for cod up here i would be surprised.
I usually do between 30 and 40 trips per winter and average around 200. There are always exceptions, a friend has had fish to 14lb and 80 from not too many trips. Another lad a friend knows had a 13lber and 9lber in a nice bag one night but overall fish numbers are way down on a typical year. They have been dropping off for the last 3 years as can be seen in the steady decline of the winning weights in the Arbroath matches. Conditions that would have required 40lb plus bags now see 20lb plus bags winning and there was one match last year in good conditions where 9lb one and 4lb odd was third. I don't do facebook, too many people that don't even know what they don't know that are experts after two winters and a handful of fish.

@@RichardJeffrey900 Hi Rik, i've spent way too much time fishing, that's for sure. I only fish the odd match for fun these days but keep in touch with most of the lads that run them. I speak to lads in Yorkshire and the North East of England as it's good to get a picture of what the North sea cod population is doing and it seems this year the further north the cod fishing hasn't been so good. Even the commercial boys fishing much further out aren't seeing many. Hopefully it's down to the amount of baitfish and the cod have been feeding mid water.
I'm glad you have had a good season,it's been hard going and not easy to find fish in numbers even in perfect conditions so well done.

Yeah they are yellows and I wish I could dig them my self but my local beds are all doug out, so tend to get them off the internet. Hookers baits is a good option but can be a bit delayed with covid

Yeah that was the Cart i used the other week. It's the red meat from an edible crab and i think it's been salted and frozen to help hold it together
