The purpose built simplicity by design is far from simple. Yes many Russian engineered arms are both simple to operate and maintain while also being relatively simple to produce. However assault rifles such as the AN 94 and other Russian weapons of revolutionary design disprove the moronic notion that simplistic weapons are of the only sort Russians are capable of or that engineering simplicity is easy. 'Crude' however is a description that I cannot agree with using any interpretation of the term.
When people give Kalishnikov a hard time because of his inventions, you've gotta remember that 1. He wasn't involved in the arms deals the USSR made and 2. Americans and Saudis did give billions of dollars in equipment to insurgents fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan who would later use that equipment, including AK-47s and PK MGs against their former benefactors.

The tripod amazed me the first time I dealt with it. Lots of people thought it was titanium, til I stuck a magnet to it. Just a very light, well designed and made bit of work. The loader..Well, it's nothing new, but it did work better than the WW2 German one it was based off of.
I've fired this beast and it's surprising very accurate! With the 600 rpm rate of fire it is very easy to fire short 2 or 3 round burst and consistently hit a target at 200 yards. It's a lot of fun Matsimus and you'll feel the power of the 7.62 54r all over your body with a long burst! :-)
I believe the Poles might have fixed/will soon fix that issue with the newest iteration of their UKM-2000 machine guns. They're modernised PKs retooled/rechambered(?) to fire NATO rounds with some additional changes to the guns themselves.
It is a good one. A modern GPMG that can feed from a near first gen Maxim belt, reliably firing a flanged cartridge, and still making most other GPMG's look ridiculous. It's barrel change is stupidly simple, when the feed tray is up, use a spent to flick over the locking wedge. Slap in a new barrel. Much as I liked shooting the D model Pig in the 80's, once I got to play with a PK/PKM, I was sold. Only the M1919/M1917 Browning holds a closer place in my heart. (Yes I've got more than a bit of trigger time with the Mg42/Mg3, and Mg34. They too are "neat" but not as absurdly well thought out as the PK).
The PK series has very similar performance to the Fn MAG, GPMG or M240 in US and UK service with one major advantage, weight. The PKM is close to half the weight (16.5 lbs vs 27.6 lbs) of the M240B without sacrificing anything. Truly a magnificent machine gun.
The back pack with the food shoot towards the end of the vid I hear is fantastic (as far as my US service friends say, one using a M249SAW{Army 101st), other with M240Bravo[USMC}). You are carrying the same about that same amount of rounds(so little or no added weight there), you now have all you bullets in one basket, so no ammo cans=less weight(the reason some add 100 or so rounds to their load out. 6 of one, half dozen of the other as they say...). And the food shoot itself, weighs like 3 pounds-ish. Not much of a price to pay for not having to do a reload process for 500-100+/- rounds. And all I've seen, have a quick detach, so you can switch to ammo cans-boxes in about 5-15 extra seconds(so I've been told from 1st hand users). Useful for sustained fire(maybe with a barrel swap or 2) and shoot and scoot. Also, most SOPs for more GPM sustained fire are (hopefully with a B gunner), you carry 3 barrels(one on 2 spare), so every 200 rounds (one ammo can) you preform a barrel swap as well. This way (unless you're unleashing the furry of God), by the time you rotate barrels, your next will have had time to sufficiently cool down a bit. Hope you, or some find this info useful. Love your vids, and no knock on Russian arms. Its inexpensive when you don't have to pay for the factory nor the materials... Actually ARs are cheaper to manufacture than AKs are. The only reason AKs are cheap is because they were made by state-owned factories and people who sell them didn't have to pay for it.
it is best MG. I had one on my S-10 shorad missiles system. It is simple construction, acuracy is better then czech UK59. My record is 17 target on 200 to 400m with 25 shots.

I'd appreciate a lot. When talking about weight, length or velocity. You'd either tell them also in proper metric-system measurements. Or add annotations to do that. It's pain it the ass getting a converter, every time you want to know exact details of things. Otherwise very good stuff. Here in Finland we use the PKM as our only light/medium machinegun for infantry. And the PKT in all our APCs with a turret.

My personal experience with the PKM is that its a bit heavy but very capable weapon. I had a blast firing off a few dozen rounds at a range and its my current favorite gpmg. No I didn't use it in combat so I cannot speak to its use in war and how well it would do. But I can say it was comfortable, easily sighted (but I would like it more with a optic) and quick to get on target. It was easy to load and intuitive to use. Its simple to keep on target whether on a tripod or bipod and I think its certainly a capable weapon.
Great piece of equipment, very accurate, very reliable, Serbian infantry platoon owned 9 of them 2x3 in squad and 3x1 in support squad (with tripod, reserve barrel and large munition boxes and with crew of 3 soldiers). I have mannaged to kill target on 650m with first short burst (2-3 bullets) and to fell into sand with barrel full of it (and machinegun did it' job excellent). It is not well suited for urban warfare, and it's ergonomy could be better but for regruteed based army is great.
Yeah shot this in Cambodia during a motorbike and gun tour in 2012 and used just belt so had to use the handle not the most comfortable but bad ass when standing up from memory US$60 for one belt. If you type in "I like guns tour 2012" you a bunch of crazy Aussies shooting stuff like RPGs and other weapons there spent a hole lot of money but for me it was a chance of a life time thing.
"Bullpup" version is actually just conversion kit made by Zenitco company. It can be fitted to any version of PK/PKM. PKP has same barrel locking mechanism as normal PK, but it's carry handle cant be used to increase leverage on stuck barrel and no spare barrels provided. Interestingly, its barrel fitted with alluminium cooling fins and thin steel jacket on top of it, works similar to Lewis, but more compact.
This Is hands down one of the finest light to medium machine guns ever produced historically other than the MG32/34/5 and 42 series I cannot think of a series of machine guns more Versatile And well produced than this design, Possibly the 240 Bravo. And to top it all off it's firing a cartridge that is 130 years old! Developed on 1891 it was the russian answer to the 8mm lebel.
Really seems Russian/Soviet weapon design is meant for sustained, grinding attrition warfare. Guns and vehicles being in combat for years without breaking down or requiring heavy maintenance. Western/NATO guns n stuff are high tech, accurate, fast and overwhelming , trying to capitalize on a quick win through speed and firepower. However requiring more maintenance and needing it faster then Russian counterparts. Russians grind their enemies down engaging on all fronts and out spending the enemy on consumables and manpower. The western nations fight fast and hard pushing hard and trying to get a fast win breaking down over time losing their edge in long engagements .
I think the ideea is based more on experience rather than doctrine. In early days of its existance and in WW2, USSR had a lot of problems with unreliable equipment and 'sophisticated concepts'. Most of their air force was taken out without firing a bullet because air fields were destroyed so now they have planes that can land on broken roads. Their assault weapons like PPsh would jam so they placed orders for AK
Indeed , but it has kinda stuck with Russia and the US since WW2 and its been influencing the kind of equipment the nations buy and use. The Russian invasion of Georgia was massive but very slow and took ages to control of airspace despite being vastly superior. And the US have tried fast and hard blitzkrieg style invasions of Iraq , Afghanistan and to some extent Vietnam despite being able to "grind" the enemy in long offensives. There is a bit of inertia with the armies and navies taking a long time to change doctrines based on previous experience. The human wave doctrine of Russia and the superior firepower doctrine of the US , has been slightly changed over the last 100 years but the nations have had mostly the same style of warfare for almost 100 years now. I don't really have a point with all this just the musings of a armchair general.
with russia, they changed the doctrine after Vietnam war and afghanistan and Vietnam-Chinese border war. after ww2, instead of human wave, they use multiple force combined arms where they created mobilize battalion where infrantry work tight with armor vehicles and they know how important air superiority is and so on, both US and Soviet/Russia know mutiple tactic and doctrines. why US heavy based on air superiority and massive eletronic warfare, Russia have to relies on Infrantry since the end of day, machine can break down in -50 degree while human don't. and since US focus on Air superiority, Soviet counter it with air defense and electronical warfare. both side use doctrine to counter the other. that is why when they faced with non conventional warfare like Vietnam or Afghan, both face heavy casualty and defeat because their doctrine was not designed to counter it
Its still "human wave" doctrine its just the modern mechanized version with lots of tanks and mechanized infantry and paratroopers, like the soviet tsunami of tanks, BMP's and AK wielding hordes that gave NATO generals nightmares.They don't use as many and its not like the Stalin era "not one step backwards" waste of men but they use a lot more then most NATO countries. Hell in the Georgian invasion in 2008 the Russians sent as many paratrooper as the Georgians had regular infantry. Then 60 thousand men extra regular infantry plus tanks and APC's in addition to paras. Sure they have both modernized and use varied and mostly the same tactics, calibers and weapons etc but the Russians have a thing for lots o manpower and the US like their guns and bombs. Not like this is news , Russians and Chinese use lots of manpower and NATO use lots of planes and high tech stuff. I'm just generalizing but the only thing that only the US truly has is proper aircraft carriers, sure GB, China ,Russia etc have "carriers" but only the US have the proper ones with 100+ craft.
As a US astronaut said in an interview the American equipment has a lot more capabilities, while the Russian tech works even if half the thing has broken down. A note on proper carriers, the USSR fielded large number of "proper" anti-ship missiles. Take a look at the P-500 (1975), P-700 (1983) and Kh-22 (1962) systems. Thankfully no one has been stupid enough to try which would win.
I fired one a couple of months ago. I'm not experienced with firearms generally but I was very surprised at just how easy this was to fire. On the tripod there was practically no recoil. I know someone who routinely used one from the shoulder like an assault rifle and the only problem he mentioned was its length moving inside buildings. It was great to experience a real piece of modern history first hand.
GPMG like this were designed to replace the heavy MMG, like the German MG08, US Browning M1917 and M1919, British Vickers MMG, Soviet Maxim - all rifle calibre and the LMG's like the Chauchat, Bren, Madsen, DP 28 or even the BAR. They did allow some nations to phase out HMG's (like the UK), but they were not intended as replacements for them.
Have fired the pkm and the pkt and can compare those to the finnish kvkk 62 and the fn mag. Whatever the situation I'd always go for the pkm, it may not be the nicest one out there but holy hell is it reliable and fun to shoot (the pkt tank platform was also a lot of fun to shoot).

All these modifications, such as bulpap RPK and knapsack supply machine gun, are private developments of their quite a lot. Guys just order weapons modifications for themselves. I believe that this is excellent, probably a successful modification will become a serial one. A knapsack is needed to exclude recharging, for a long fire to suppress. bulpap is needed in urban conditions to reduce the length of the weapon.
The bullpup with a foreword handgrip and a backpack ammo supply gives you a major increase to handling, maneuverability, rounds available and accuracy when standing or kneeling. Can it get any better?
A question regarding the backpack ammo feeds, what is the length of the discarded belt ? Because if it's long enough the handler could trip over it while firing on the move and.....
The non-exchangeable barrel on the PKP was tested during the development and was able to send 3 full ammo boxes down range in full auto without loss of accuracy. That is a full load that machine-gunner carries. So there isn't really a need for replaceable barrel on it on a squad level.

The Pecheneg is a full power 7.62x54R GPMG - The last P stands for Pekhotny, which if my Russian is on point, indicates an infantry minded version, so I guess it's design philosophy is to make it more infantry friendly - no need for spare barrels (saves weight), slightly shorter, modification friendly (sights, picatinny rail etc)
The PKM replaced the RPD in service and its role. It weighs significantly less than any other GPMG in similar calibres. The PKM is used and designed more as a true GPMG than the L7 or M240 in Western armies. The PKP is just 'special'
Ofc only the Russian MoD knows what the Russian MoD wants/thinks etc, but I doubt the PKP 'Pecheneg' is just "special". I think the PKP complements the PKM, where the PKM remains a GPMG in a more traditional sense, and the PKP is a more mobile/infantry friendly variant. In an example, the PKM is set up as a defensive MG by standard infantry, and the PKP is issued to some Razvedchik or Desantnik for ops/patrol.
The PKP is actually heavier than the PKM, even without a bipod attached - and lacks a quick change barrel. I don't really know how its supposed to be more infantry friendly. The forced air cooling is of dubious effectiveness. Needless to say I much prefer the PKM, for any role.
Alas being in the UK, my experience with firearms is limited to museum visits, history days, reading and Cadets, but I think I'd agree in keeping a standard PKM for any general purpose, and put Pecheneg as a weapon for the VDV, MorPekh and SpetsNaz units etc. By 'infantry friendly', whilst the weapon itself may be heavier, its forced air cooling would negate the need to carry spare barrels, and fumble with barrel changes in combat, thereby being a bit more combat practical - yes a good team could change a MG42 barrel in seconds, but that is still time not combat capable. When I was in Cadets, I found the L98A2 to be rear heavy/unbalanced (albeit my shooting experience was very limited), but from handing other weapons such as an old L1A1, I preferred that despite it being (from memory at least - this was some years ago) heavier overall, but more balanced for each hand. Also, as a newer weapon, the Pecheneg is doubtless being used for the Ratnik infantry suite, whereby its picatinny rails would allow integrating optics and such into the suit, more so than a 'legacy' PKM. The AK-74M3/MR 'Obves' is not insignificantly heavier than the standard AK-74M, but the extra weight from reworked parts allows the mounting of optics, grips, lasers, etc. and thus is attractive to the MoD looking forward to modernise (Idk yet whether the decision has been made for the new standard issue to be the AK-12 platform, or continuing the AK-74 with the M3/MR 'Obves' but I digress).

I have carried both the M240B and the PKM. The PKM is so much better. The grip is much easier to fire from the standing position not to mention, you have the box hugging ability. If you hit contact you can also use the box as a firing position off the knee or ground. If I had to put in a way, - it really just is a heavy rifle where the M240B is a machine gun.
I have fired the pkm it was quite nice to shoot at a machine gun shoot. It was very controllable. I somewhat got yeahed at for not letting lose since i was bursting it and others wanted to shoot it. But even in full auto with about 100 rounds it was very smooth shoting.
I used to be a PKM machingunner back in the army. Actually it is quite accurate, especially when you shoot SVD match grade ammunition. Maintenance is not simple as AK, but gun is extremely reliable. There were no jams whatsoever during my 2 years of compulsory service.
I've heard only good things about the air cooling on the Pecheneg. The reason there is no quick-change barrel (in fact changing the barrel is a depot-level job) is that you don't NEED to change the barrel. The active air-cooling system is so efficient, that even in prolonged engagements the risk of overheating is quite low. Also, changing the barrel requires slight recalibration of the cooling system, hence the depot-level requirement.

The higher angle of the bull pup's feed would actually help feeding due to the high taper of the 7.62x54R. It also attaches the ammunition box more securely because the mounting point is the front face of the box and not the thinner, bullet length strip, on the top
The 7.62-mm machine gun of the Pecheneg PCP (GRAU-6P41 Index) is a Russian single machine gun developed on the basis of PKM. The basis of the design is taken by the 7.62-mm Kalashnikov machine gun. This made it possible to launch production with minimal costs in 1999, and also to simplify its operation. The trunk group ensures the shooting of at least 600 cartridges with long bursts without degrading the effectiveness of the shooting. With a long battle, the machine gun can fire up to 10,000 cartridges per hour without deteriorating combat characteristics and reducing the barrel's resource. In general, Pecheneg retained up to 80% of the total parts with PKM (receiver with all mechanisms, machine). Pecheneg can use the entire range of rifle cartridges 7.62 × 54 mm R. In the machine gun the system of forced air cooling of the barrel is used due to the energy of the powder gases. Adjustable gas removal mechanism allows exploiting Pecheneg in any climatic conditions. The trunk has an outer finning and is enclosed in a metal casing. Powder gases, leaving the barrel, create a vacuum zone in the front of the casing. In the rear part of the casing special ventilation windows are made. Thus, during firing along the barrel, cold air is continuously pumped. Constant cooling of the barrel reduces the scattering during shooting, and also increases the longevity of the trunk. The resource of the barrel is 25-30 thousand shots when firing in intensive regimes. The reinforcement of the trunk allowed to transfer the bipod from the gas chamber to the muzzle, which increased the support base and reduced the dispersion to 70%, but this position of the bipod is not always convenient, since it limits the sector of fire along the front without moving the arrow and / or arms. Alignment of the temperature field of the barrel allowed to increase its resource to the level set for the whole machine gun (or twice as compared to the PCM), and to reduce the withdrawal of the aiming point during long-term shooting to a value equal to no more than 0,001 parts of range. This allowed to abandon the second trunk (although the fastening of the trunk at Pecheneg remains quick-disconnect) and, in spite of the installation of an additional screen for the machine gun, to reduce the field weight of the weapon. In addition, the design of the Pecheneg machine gun can significantly reduce the harmful effect of the ascending flow of the barrel-heated air on the aiming line. The increased heat emission of a new machine gun is noticeable in the dark, even with the unaided eye, by the brightness of the glow of the trunks after the shooting of the entire ammunition.

The new barrel was pushed well over 20 000 rounds life span. That is more than service interval for the gun itself. Cooling jacket along with ribbed barrel provides active ventilation while shooting. Basically it sucks air from behind the barrel and runs it along full length of the cooling jacket (due to depressurization near muzzle brake occurring after the shot). Proved to be good enough to keep everything nice and cool (relatively) even on full auto. As far as I know, people ran out of ammo on stationary mounted Pechenegs (up to 600 rounds) before the barrel could fail. Of course accuracy suffered tremendously and the muzzle flash looked more like a flamethrower. But under given conditions that is understandable. So yeah, as it turned out fixed barrel can actually be a good thing. That handle over the barrel is for transportation purposes only. So no, it will not grind your knuckles because they will be nowhere near it while shooting. Handle for shooting on the move is present on squad support variants of the gun only. You can see one on 12:09 (mounted on the bullpup variant). Also you can see the instructor explaining where the handle is placed on 10:44 (obviously showing it on a regular variant of the gun). By the way bullpup variant is a conversion, it is not produced on mass. Purely because there is not that big of a demand for 7.62×54R GPMG that pretends to be an automatic rifle. Overall PK is exactly what you can expect, it is an AK of machine guns. Heavy, simple and very reliable. Also packs quite a punch with 7.62×54R.

During familiarization training I did have an opportunity to fire a pk. I don't recall its full designation. The big problem I had with the gun was the weight of the belt. The solid belt is heavier than a.disintegratable belt.

The purpose built simplicity by design is far from simple. Yes many Russian engineered arms are both simple to operate and maintain while also being relatively simple to produce. However assault rifles such as the AN 94 and other Russian weapons of revolutionary design disprove the moronic notion that simplistic weapons are of the only sort Russians are capable of or that engineering simplicity is easy.

I've fired this beast and it's surprising very accurate! With the 600 rpm rate of fire it is very easy to fire short 2 or 3 round burst and consistently hit a target at 200 yards. It's a lot of fun Matsimus and you'll feel the power of the 7.62 54r all over your body with a long burst! :-)

I believe the Poles might have fixed/will soon fix that issue with the newest iteration of their UKM-2000 machine guns. They're modernised PKs retooled/rechambered(?) to fire NATO rounds with some additional changes to the guns themselves.

It is a good one. A modern GPMG that can feed from a near first gen Maxim belt, reliably firing a flanged cartridge, and still making most other GPMG's look ridiculous.
It's barrel change is stupidly simple, when the feed tray is up, use a spent to flick over the locking wedge. Slap in a new barrel.
Much as I liked shooting the D model Pig in the 80's, once I got to play with a PK/PKM, I was sold.
Only the M1919/M1917 Browning holds a closer place in my heart.
(Yes I've got more than a bit of trigger time with the Mg42/Mg3, and Mg34. They too are "neat" but not as absurdly well thought out as the PK).
The PK series has very similar performance to the Fn MAG, GPMG or M240 in US and UK service with one major advantage, weight. The PKM is close to half the weight (16.5 lbs vs 27.6 lbs) of the M240B without sacrificing anything. Truly a magnificent machine gun.

The back pack with the food shoot towards the end of the vid I hear is fantastic (as far as my US service friends say, one using a M249SAW{Army 101st), other with M240Bravo[USMC}). You are carrying the same about that same amount of rounds(so little or no added weight there), you now have all you bullets in one basket, so no ammo cans=less weight(the reason some add 100 or so rounds to their load out. 6 of one, half dozen of the other as they say...). And the food shoot itself, weighs like 3 pounds-ish. Not much of a price to pay for not having to do a reload process for 500-100+/- rounds. And all I've seen, have a quick detach, so you can switch to ammo cans-boxes in about 5-15 extra seconds(so I've been told from 1st hand users). Useful for sustained fire(maybe with a barrel swap or 2) and shoot and scoot. Also, most SOPs for more GPM sustained fire are (hopefully with a B gunner), you carry 3 barrels(one on 2 spare), so every 200 rounds (one ammo can) you preform a barrel swap as well. This way (unless you're unleashing the furry of God), by the time you rotate barrels, your next will have had time to sufficiently cool down a bit. Hope you, or some find this info useful. Love your vids, and no knock on Russian arms. Most are probably complaining to you from some electronic device made in a facility in China with anti-suicaide nets...so moral high-ground is just a point of view at best. Cheers, Matsimus. My personal experience with the PKM is that its a bit heavy but very capable weapon. I had a blast firing off a few dozen rounds at a range and its my current favorite gpmg. No I didn't use it in combat so I cannot speak to its use in war and how well it would do. But I can say it was comfortable, easily sighted (but I would like it more with a optic) and quick to get on target. It was easy to load and intuitive to use. Its simple to keep on target whether on a tripod or bipod and I think its certainly a capable weapon.

Great piece of equipment, very accurate, very reliable, Serbian infantry platoon owned 9 of them 2x3 in squad and 3x1 in support squad (with tripod, reserve barrel and large munition boxes and with crew of 3 soldiers).
I have mannaged to kill target on 650m with first short burst (2-3 bullets) and to fell into sand with barrel full of it (and machinegun did it' job excellent).
It is not well suited for urban warfare, and it's ergonomy could be better but for regruteed based army is great.
Yeah shot this in Cambodia during a motorbike and gun tour in 2012 and used just belt so had to use the handle not the most comfortable but bad ass when standing up from memory US$60 for one belt.
If you type in "I like guns tour 2012" you a bunch of crazy Aussies shooting stuff like RPGs and other weapons there spent a hole lot of money but for me it was a chance of a life time thing.

"Bullpup" version is actually just conversion kit made by Zenitco company. It can be fitted to any version of PK/PKM.
PKP has same barrel locking mechanism as normal PK, but it's carry handle cant be used to increase leverage on stuck barrel and no spare barrels provided. Interestingly, its barrel fitted with alluminium cooling fins and thin steel jacket on top of it, works similar to Lewis, but more compact.

This Is hands down one of the finest light to medium machine guns ever produced historically other than the MG32/34/5 and 42 series I cannot think of a series of machine guns more Versatile And well produced than this design, Possibly the 240 Bravo. And to top it all off it's firing a cartridge that is 130 years old! Developed on 1891 it was the russian answer to the 8mm lebel.

Really seems Russian/Soviet weapon design is meant for sustained, grinding attrition warfare. Guns and vehicles being in combat for years without breaking down or requiring heavy maintenance. Western/NATO guns n stuff are high tech, accurate, fast and overwhelming , trying to capitalize on a quick win through speed and firepower. However requiring more maintenance and needing it faster then Russian counterparts. Russians grind their enemies down engaging on all fronts and out spending the enemy on consumables and manpower. The western nations fight fast and hard pushing hard and trying to get a fast win breaking down over time losing their edge in long engagements .
I think the ideea is based more on experience rather than doctrine. In early days of its existance and in WW2, USSR had a lot of problems with unreliable equipment and 'sophisticated concepts'. Most of their air force was taken out without firing a bullet because air fields were destroyed so now they have planes that can land on broken roads. Their assault weapons like PPsh would jam so they placed orders for AK
Indeed , but it has kinda stuck with Russia and the US since WW2 and its been influencing the kind of equipment the nations buy and use. The Russian invasion of Georgia was massive but very slow and took ages to control of airspace despite being vastly superior. And the US have tried fast and hard blitzkrieg style invasions of Iraq , Afghanistan and to some extent Vietnam despite being able to "grind" the enemy in long offensives. There is a bit of inertia with the armies and navies taking a long time to change doctrines based on previous experience. The human wave doctrine of Russia and the superior firepower doctrine of the US , has been slightly changed over the last 100 years but the nations have had mostly the same style of warfare for almost 100 years now. I don't really have a point with all this just the musings of a armchair general.
with russia, they changed the doctrine after Vietnam war and afghanistan and Vietnam-Chinese border war. after ww2, instead of human wave, they use multiple force combined arms where they created mobilize battalion where infrantry work tight with armor vehicles and they know how important air superiority is and so on, both US and Soviet/Russia know mutiple tactic and doctrines. why US heavy based on air superiority and massive eletronic warfare, Russia have to relies on Infrantry since the end of day, machine can break down in -50 degree while human don't. and since US focus on Air superiority, Soviet counter it with air defense and electronical warfare. both side use doctrine to counter the other. that is why when they faced with non conventional warfare like Vietnam or Afghan, both face heavy casualty and defeat because their doctrine was not designed to counter it
Its still "human wave" doctrine its just the modern mechanized version with lots of tanks and mechanized infantry and paratroopers, like the soviet tsunami of tanks, BMP's and AK wielding hordes that gave NATO generals nightmares.They don't use as many and its not like the Stalin era "not one step backwards" waste of men but they use a lot more then most NATO countries. Hell in the Georgian invasion in 2008 the Russians sent as many paratrooper as the Georgians had regular infantry. Then 60 thousand men extra regular infantry plus tanks and APC's in addition to paras. Sure they have both modernized and use varied and mostly the same tactics, calibers and weapons etc but the Russians have a thing for lots o manpower and the US like their guns and bombs. Not like this is news , Russians and Chinese use lots of manpower and NATO use lots of planes and high tech stuff. I'm just generalizing but the only thing that only the US truly has is proper aircraft carriers, sure GB, China ,Russia etc have "carriers" but only the US have the proper ones with 100+ craft.
As a US astronaut said in an interview the American equipment has a lot more capabilities, while the Russian tech works even if half the thing has broken down.
A note on proper carriers, the USSR fielded large number of "proper" anti-ship missiles. Take a look at the P-500 (1975), P-700 (1983) and Kh-22 (1962) systems. Thankfully no one has been stupid enough to try which would win.
I fired one a couple of months ago. I'm not experienced with firearms generally but I was very surprised at just how easy this was to fire. On the tripod there was practically no recoil. I know someone who routinely used one from the shoulder like an assault rifle and the only problem he mentioned was its length moving inside buildings. It was great to experience a real piece of modern history first hand.
It's amazing that Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK rifle platform was so cheap and reliable that we have the AK, AEK, SVD, and PKM platform variants

GPMG like this were designed to replace the heavy MMG, like the German MG08, US Browning M1917 and M1919, British Vickers MMG, Soviet Maxim - all rifle calibre and the LMG's like the Chauchat, Bren, Madsen, DP 28 or even the BAR.
They did allow some nations to phase out HMG's (like the UK), but they were not intended as replacements for them.

Have fired the pkm and the pkt and can compare those to the finnish kvkk 62 and the fn mag. Whatever the situation I'd always go for the pkm, it may not be the nicest one out there but holy hell is it reliable and fun to shoot (the pkt tank platform was also a lot of fun to shoot).

All these modifications, such as bulpap RPK and knapsack supply machine gun, are private developments of their quite a lot. Guys just order weapons modifications for themselves. I believe that this is excellent, probably a successful modification will become a serial one.
A knapsack is needed to exclude recharging, for a long fire to suppress.
bulpap is needed in urban conditions to reduce the length of the weapon.
The bullpup with a foreword handgrip and a backpack ammo supply gives you a major increase to handling, maneuverability, rounds available and accuracy when standing or kneeling. Can it get any better?

The non-exchangeable barrel on the PKP was tested during the development and was able to send 3 full ammo boxes down range in full auto without loss of accuracy. That is a full load that machine-gunner carries. So there isn't really a need for replaceable barrel on it on a squad level.

Other than that, PKP as a SAW? The Pecheneg is a full power 7.62x54R GPMG - The last P stands for Pekhotny, which if my Russian is on point, indicates an infantry minded version, so I guess it's design philosophy is to make it more infantry friendly - no need for spare barrels (saves weight), slightly shorter, modification friendly (sights, picatinny rail etc)
The PKM replaced the RPD in service and its role. It weighs significantly less than any other GPMG in similar calibres. The PKM is used and designed more as a true GPMG than the L7 or M240 in Western armies.
The PKP is just 'special'
Ofc only the Russian MoD knows what the Russian MoD wants/thinks etc, but I doubt the PKP 'Pecheneg' is just "special". I think the PKP complements the PKM, where the PKM remains a GPMG in a more traditional sense, and the PKP is a more mobile/infantry friendly variant. In an example, the PKM is set up as a defensive MG by standard infantry, and the PKP is issued to some Razvedchik or Desantnik for ops/patrol.
actually PKP mostly use by special force and airborne infrantry while PKM still serve as basic infrantry squad and vehicle mount.
The PKP is actually heavier than the PKM, even without a bipod attached - and lacks a quick change barrel. I don't really know how its supposed to be more infantry friendly. The forced air cooling is of dubious effectiveness. Needless to say I much prefer the PKM, for any role.
Alas being in the UK, my experience with firearms is limited to museum visits, history days, reading and Cadets, but I think I'd agree in keeping a standard PKM for any general purpose, and put Pecheneg as a weapon for the VDV, MorPekh and SpetsNaz units etc.
By 'infantry friendly', whilst the weapon itself may be heavier, its forced air cooling would negate the need to carry spare barrels, and fumble with barrel changes in combat, thereby being a bit more combat practical - yes a good team could change a MG42 barrel in seconds, but that is still time not combat capable. When I was in Cadets, I found the L98A2 to be rear heavy/unbalanced (albeit my shooting experience was very limited), but from handing other weapons such as an old L1A1, I preferred that despite it being (from memory at least - this was some years ago) heavier overall, but more balanced for each hand.
Also, as a newer weapon, the Pecheneg is doubtless being used for the Ratnik infantry suite, whereby its picatinny rails would allow integrating optics and such into the suit, more so than a 'legacy' PKM. The AK-74M3/MR 'Obves' is not insignificantly heavier than the standard AK-74M, but the extra weight from reworked parts allows the mounting of optics, grips, lasers, etc. and thus is attractive to the MoD looking forward to modernise (Idk yet whether the decision has been made for the new standard issue to be the AK-12 platform, or continuing the AK-74 with the M3/MR 'Obves' but I digress).

I have carried both the M240B and the PKM. The PKM is so much better. The grip is much easier to fire from the standing position not to mention, you have the box hugging ability. If you hit contact you can also use the box as a firing position off the knee or ground. If I had to put in a way, - it really just is a heavy rifle where the M240B is a machine gun.
Having fired several hundred rounds through PKM, I have to say it never gets old.
I would give my unborn child for a chance to hip-fire the PKM again.
I have fired the pkm it was quite nice to shoot at a machine gun shoot. It was very controllable. I somewhat got yeahed at for not letting lose since i was bursting it and others wanted to shoot it. But even in full auto with about 100 rounds it was very smooth shoting.

I used to be a PKM machingunner back in the army. Actually it is quite accurate, especially when you shoot SVD match grade ammunition.
Maintenance is not simple as AK, but gun is extremely reliable. There were no jams whatsoever during my 2 years of compulsory service.

I've heard only good things about the air cooling on the Pecheneg. The reason there is no quick-change barrel (in fact changing the barrel is a depot-level job) is that you don't NEED to change the barrel. The active air-cooling system is so efficient, that even in prolonged engagements the risk of overheating is quite low. Also, changing the barrel requires slight recalibration of the cooling system, hence the depot-level requirement.

The higher angle of the bull pup's feed would actually help feeding due to the high taper of the 7.62x54R. It also attaches the ammunition box more securely because the mounting point is the front face of the box and not the thinner, bullet length strip, on the top

The 7.62-mm machine gun of the Pecheneg PCP (GRAU-6P41 Index) is a Russian single machine gun developed on the basis of PKM.
The basis of the design is taken by the 7.62-mm Kalashnikov machine gun. This made it possible to launch production with minimal costs in 1999, and also to simplify its operation. The trunk group ensures the shooting of at least 600 cartridges with long bursts without degrading the effectiveness of the shooting. With a long battle, the machine gun can fire up to 10,000 cartridges per hour without deteriorating combat characteristics and reducing the barrel's resource. In general, Pecheneg retained up to 80% of the total parts with PKM (receiver with all mechanisms, machine).
Pecheneg can use the entire range of rifle cartridges 7.62 × 54 mm R.
In the machine gun the system of forced air cooling of the barrel is used due to the energy of the powder gases. Adjustable gas removal mechanism allows exploiting Pecheneg in any climatic conditions. The trunk has an outer finning and is enclosed in a metal casing. Powder gases, leaving the barrel, create a vacuum zone in the front of the casing. In the rear part of the casing special ventilation windows are made. Thus, during firing along the barrel, cold air is continuously pumped. Constant cooling of the barrel reduces the scattering during shooting, and also increases the longevity of the trunk.
The resource of the barrel is 25-30 thousand shots when firing in intensive regimes.
The reinforcement of the trunk allowed to transfer the bipod from the gas chamber to the muzzle, which increased the support base and reduced the dispersion to 70%, but this position of the bipod is not always convenient, since it limits the sector of fire along the front without moving the arrow and / or arms. Alignment of the temperature field of the barrel allowed to increase its resource to the level set for the whole machine gun (or twice as compared to the PCM), and to reduce the withdrawal of the aiming point during long-term shooting to a value equal to no more than 0,001 parts of range. This allowed to abandon the second trunk (although the fastening of the trunk at Pecheneg remains quick-disconnect) and, in spite of the installation of an additional screen for the machine gun, to reduce the field weight of the weapon.
In addition, the design of the Pecheneg machine gun can significantly reduce the harmful effect of the ascending flow of the barrel-heated air on the aiming line. The increased heat emission of a new machine gun is noticeable in the dark, even with the unaided eye, by the brightness of the glow of the trunks after the shooting of the entire ammunition.

The new barrel was pushed well over 20 000 rounds life span. That is more than service interval for the gun itself.
Cooling jacket along with ribbed barrel provides active ventilation while shooting. Basically it sucks air from behind the barrel and runs it along full length of the cooling jacket (due to depressurization near muzzle brake occurring after the shot).
Proved to be good enough to keep everything nice and cool (relatively) even on full auto.
As far as I know, people ran out of ammo on stationary mounted Pechenegs (up to 600 rounds) before the barrel could fail. Of course accuracy suffered tremendously and the muzzle flash looked more like a flamethrower. But under given conditions that is understandable.
So yeah, as it turned out fixed barrel can actually be a good thing.
That handle over the barrel is for transportation purposes only. So no, it will not grind your knuckles because they will be nowhere near it while shooting.
Handle for shooting on the move is present on squad support variants of the gun only. You can see one on 12:09 (mounted on the bullpup variant). Also you can see the instructor explaining where the handle is placed on 10:44 (obviously showing it on a regular variant of the gun).
By the way bullpup variant is a conversion, it is not produced on mass. Purely because there is not that big of a demand for 7.62×54R GPMG that pretends to be an automatic rifle.
Overall PK is exactly what you can expect, it is an AK of machine guns. Heavy, simple and very reliable. Also packs quite a punch with 7.62×54R.

During familiarization training I did have an opportunity to fire a pk. I don't recall its full designation. The big problem I had with the gun was the weight of the belt. The solid belt is heavier than a.disintegratable belt.
You know whats most confusing about PK series? No BS from "experts" of it being actually designed by Hugo Schmeisser because "that little illiterate peasant Kalashnikov couldn't possibly ever designed anything like this!!!!!"
